  • An old series of tests of the "NHTSA Test Device", which is an array of 6" thick honeycomb-faced load cell barriers (4X10). In this series, they are mounted either on a solid wall or on a Moving Test Device. This series was to establish a test methodology for evaluating crash compatibility and aggressiveness. Tests performed are a full-overlap crash test into the stationary NHTSA Test Device, then compared to an equivalent-velocity Moving Test Device collision. The vehicles tested in this series were the 1975 Model Year Plymouth Fury Sedan, Ford Torino Sedan, Volvo 244DL Sedan, and Honda Civic (CCVC) 3 Dr Hatchback.
The test in this video is a 1975 Ford Torino Sedan (351 V8, 3-Speed Auto) full-overlap frontal crash test into a Moving Test Device at a combined closing speed of 59.1 Mph (95.1 Km/h). Both vehicles were moving at 29.6 Mph (47.6 Km/h). This test was performed on 05/16/1978 at Dynamic Science in Phoenix, Arizona.
    Dummy Readings:
    Driver - Passenger
    HIC 765 - 1211 (1000 Max)
    Chest G's 59 - 41 (60 Max)
    Femur Loads (L/R - N) 9648/7064 - 3078/2709 (10000 Max)

Whoa, I am surprising that 1975 sedan car from Ford achieved so good results. City cruising, about 30 mph each car (one car, one cart) and those deformations are pretty good regarding that era. As a European I much more prefer to crash in 75 Torino, than any Opel or Fiat from 70s or even 80s. I have "Auto Motor und Sport" magazine (german edition) from I believe 74 or 76 with similar crash tests (full-overlap, but into a wall) of small european city cars like Fiat 127, Citroen 2CV and competition. I remember that crush test dummies wore helmets! and one in Fiat 126 hit with a helmet in windshield crushing it into pieces... :)

It's surprising how poorly the shoulder belts didn't restrain the driver and passenger. Way too much slack allowing impact with the steering wheel and dash.
