- Please consider supporting the project each week with a few dollars / brupeg
We're on the move... almost. Because of Cyclone Jasper north of us, the trawler coming in to take over our current work berth is delayed, which gives us time to finish building our exhaust stack.
We get the bollard made so when we need to move to the new berth in the marina next week we can.
The work we are getting too needs to happen so we can get on anchor to save money and get moving to have some adventures.
Thank you everyone for your amazing support!
Jess, Dame and Babycat

Thanks for watching and for your support!
This video was absolutely exhausting.
good to see jess well again
ZAP!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S THE PLASMA EARTH ! I'm dying over here!
Thanks for the great laugh damion. And yes I've done it to. It dam hurts without the earth
I feel so exhausted after watching all this
Good Work Bru Crew 👍👍
🇦🇺
Put a doubling strip on the deck, have the bollard sitting on that. I have had a bollard pull out and lift the deck up on a delivery from Chile to Bundaberg. This was whilst moored alongside at Nuka Hiva in French Polynesia.
I have followed brupeg for years, you both deserve the relaxing sunset cruise that is almost visible. Dame you are awesome, a natural and inspiring teacher, I wish our children had more people just like you! My 7yold boy loves to watch you weld, (worth mentioning) I'm a sheet metal engineer and have tig welded most days since mid 90s and you're welding is fine. Usually i have zero ego except yesterday I said!!! Regan daddy's welds are way better than dames!!!! he looked at me and said "whatever" I'm still chuckling about it , cheers guys!!
Nice job, totally reminded me when I built a 21ft 6 inch x 3/16 steel chimney with 8 inch spiral for the wood stove and had to put down thru the roof, it was a bit heavier, 4 guys.
Hey I saw brupeg while eating fish and chips and thought it looked familiar then I looked at the name I was like oh it's brupeg good to see its in water
Seeing all the pipe work I thought that I was watching @ThePethericks build an organ.
Jess & Dame - Greetings from Canada, eh! I really enjoyed this vlog but I was exhausted by the time you had finished the job. I noted that you were having some difficulty getting the welding clamps sorted out. Perhaps some matching coloured tape on each end of the cables (welding head and clamp) so they don't get confused? Say red colour on one set and blue or green on the other set? Stay safe and congrats on being afloat!
Dry exhaust is the way to go ! By taking a 2" pipe and weld it as your upper brace and use that pipe for your Gen. exhaust ! Just my opinion ! lol
Wonderful to see the two of you knocking some old projects off the list.
"Nearly all the ammunition"and 1 standard Jess. Bloody funny! Love your work Damo.
Dame, that's the wrong earth .... sorry but I had a good laugh .... good to see your strength returning Jess.
Yeah it was shocking when I figured that out
Thoroughly enjoyed Damion struggling with that exhaust pipe lol.
The grounding clip mix-up was entertaining too.
Jess, try doing things with your opposite hand, it helps build up muscle memory in the brain.
Should paint the drill holes to prevent rust!
Very smart idea to vent engine room air around the exhaust stack ....2 birds one stone 👍
“Bollards to that!” ❤
Stephen may wish he’d listened to Jess, Arabella could have done with a bollard ;)
So nice to see the cat getting used to boat life!
Well he had a cleat but the storm ripped his food rail from the boat
Alignment, roundment, fitment AND truement, all on the one zorst pipe. How amazement.
Amazing the amount of design and work that goes into every modification to the trawler . You should be very proud of your project it keeps getting better and better . Thank you for sharing with us out here . Best wishes for the Holidays and a new year . San Diego , Ca USA 2023
I can't believe this is real. And the way you make me feel. Cheers for that!!
You make me wanna sing!
Good for allowing for vertical pipe growth as the pipe gets hot. Glad you're soft mounting the exhaust. Very important to keep the sound out of the hull structure.
That was exhausting just watching all that hard work!
Here’s s an idea to protect the boat when sparks are flying. A welding blanket and some heavy duty magnets to keep it in place.
Wrong ground clamp...... Awesome
It’s was a very grounding experience
I think your offset sail mast there is a bit short for race sailing, may need to add a secondary mast topping lifty thingy like tally ho is doing!
What a wonderful relationship you both have - the most resilient couple on the internet. All power to you Kia Kaha
It was a straight exhausting episode that really got things extracted in to thin air..
When I saw Jess modelling the new Brupeg-exhaust-pipe-beanie-hat-merch I thought, 'What did Dame put in her tea?'. 🤣🤣👍✌
Dear Jess and Damian,
Willeke and I love to see how Brupeg is growing and getting finished for her job as an expedition ship. We noticed for the first time that she’s registered in New Zealand. We like to learn why this is done if that’s not too much asked. The exhaust job is very well done and fits nice with the overall look of the ship. As always we look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands
She is registered to New Zealand as Jess and I are both from there, it’s a fraction of the cost and allows us to bypass a lot of restrictive rules required for Australian registered ships of this size.
@@ProjectBrupeg thanks for letting us know and we didn’t know you both are from New Zealand. Of course you’ve to for the less expensive registration
Lucky you had the name and rego on, people may have dobbed on you 😂😂😂
You could redirect the hot air going out ,back to the cabins when it's cold !,?
cats they know how to find leisure in anything lol boats looking good don't forget to batten down the hatches
Jess & Damion great video over yrs. Your about to live on the sea at a mooring. It's been an incredible journey so far. Less busy mechanical & more fun due. The ear needs to balance out the ocean. So life will become more of supply & re supply. Have safe anchorages.
Great video Guy’s as always
All the very best to you both
Just a suggestion. Tractor's have there exhaust tips pointing forward. The air flowing against the exhaust gases push's the gases up higher. When the tip is facing back they are pushed down.
Hi All,,did the guy say your max rpm for cruse was 1800RPM on engine and it would run all night and day and this is the recommended sea speed .And you will have plenty of reserve speed if needed.....love to all
Max continuous speed is 1800 but we cruise between 1200-1500rpm
I just realized next episode is my lucky number!!
Sooo good to see Jess feeling good again cautious optimism and all.
Just get your waste veggie oil from a donut shop, fried pastry smells as you cruise. Avoid Long John Silver’s, the stench is like low tide…
Best bit is Dame stating he removed NEARLY all the ammunition from the box! I can imagine our American cousins reaching for the keyboard shouting 'you fool! Remove ALL the ammunition'😂
Nah... As an American, I'm completely fine with the way it was conducted!!
And it didn’t explode even once. Therefore 100% of our testing shows you don’t need to remove all the ammo from your wind shelter to be explosion safe.
“Ahghhaah you dickhead!
thats the plasma cutter earth!! “
I almost spat out my orange juice 😂
Hey guys, regarding your Sampson post. You might have issues locking off the line as the stag horns are too high. It will become evident when tying up fatter ropes.
It’s so weird to see the boat in the water…. It’s been such a long ride to this point . I can’t wait for the next adventure
Make sure the ventilation system has relaxed air passages, nothing above 5M/S air velocity. Nothing worse than having to cruise with engine hatches open. If you need a hand with design send a Damien sketch with rough dimensions. Cooling air requirements for the Cat are readily available. Can sort out air volume and pressure quickly. Then choose a ventilation fan to suit.
The time lapse really shows how much the boat id moving while tired up. Is the boat movement making it harder to keep a steady weld? Have you considered welding some flat disks to the end of the bollard pipes? Might make it safer with a flat surface to hit against. Great work as always. Thanks for explaining the work restrictions policy at the other tie up.
Damo has a nice pair of bollards in hand. ☺☺A good rub to clean them off and job done.
Nice edit too 2x 👍
11:00 - I know it's expensive, but I imagine Chockfast would make a good permanent fairing/filler for that unevenness. Considering how tough it is and how well it sticks to steel, it should level up the deck edge nicely. Just a thought...🙂
I think that instead of Red, the Kiwi Ensign should be greenish brown and fuzzy, just like the Kiwi we all love in fruit salad! All the exhaust needs now is an Ocean Liner smoke stack, just not the one from the Titanic...
Who is puting those cute littl birbs in a fruit salat? That is just not cool. /j
That step could use a handrail or pole to grab onto. I've got a bad back and I'm always looking for things to hold onto when taking a step up or down to stabilize.
Dame, you look exhausted! Lots of things coming together. Question: Does your big pipe have a condensation trap at the bottom? (To catch water vapor and rain water)
They have a water trap and drain in the engine room.
@@SuperDriver379 Thanks!
Jess is back on tools, bloody awesome. Fat exhaust gets sorted, just 2 more to go for the gen sets and that's 3 jobs ticked off the list. When is Birk (SP) coming back, I miss him already.
Birk! Come back!
Jess, next time check through the old hard discs and you will find one the size of the pipe, it will give the perfect Radis.
The piece cut out is a Radius so an old worn hard grinding disc (look through the assorted ones) and you will find one close to the diameter of the pipe (a tad bigger is better) that will produce the diameter needed so the pipe will fit in the RADIUS!!
Having be a welder/fabricator for 40 years it is second nature but perhaps not to yourself..
Ps, those solar panels are believable aren’t they, you guys are giving them a decent workout
With that flange on the exhaust tip you could easily use guy wires to support tge exhaust, it is the easiest and simplest way to support the exhaust.
Question, wouldn't be better to end the exhausts with say 75°, bend instead of 90°, like that the fumes get pushed upwards without necessary making the stack any higher?
Damo, is there a reason you can't plumb your generator exhausts into the main exhaust in the engine room? Perhaps in the vertical section and with the generator outlets facing up rather than at 90deg. Perhaps there is a good reason you can't, like rules or something. It would be good to know.
As soon as you gota shock i thought "you d""khead you got the wrong earth, ask me how i knew what it would be.😅😊😢
That was the best laugh i've had today! Sorry Dame but that was funny, especially since i have done similar myself.
Decktite to seal it to the roof from the elements? We used them on 500kw gas fired boilers and they didn't degrade. That's if it needs to be sealed?
Awesome thanks, it does need to be sealed.
maby you should colour the different grounds so you know right away you have the right one.
You need to watch your editing, your weather radar has the Hurricane going clockwise ! ! ! That ain't natural. LOL.
Firstly it is not a 'hurricane', it's a 'cyclone' and as we are in the southern hemisphere they rotate in a clockwise direction. The lesson for today.
@@lindsayrandall5488 Sir I know that, It is meant to be a
joke. Hinse the "LOL"
If you weld a pice of flat steel to the angel iron on your new tool, you could clamp the tool to the wise and then clamp the pipe in the tool.
Brilliant! Great tip
If you want taller exhaust pipe, support it with wires, like a mast.
Because of how thin the pipe is relative to anything structural the wires wind up flexing and breaking it over time.
Hi Guys , sorry did i miss something. Has Jess suffered a head injury ? Sending you all my best wishes
She has had four over the years.
Needs a super trapp muffler on the end, but seriously great work in progress
nice job on the Ballard . but why didn't you cap the ends of the pipes ?
No need. It’s stainless so wont rust. Also currently matches the original bollards
Looks easy but it takes time and thought. A few more days to finish due to bad weather.
Comming together very nice👌👌. Question..; what about muffler?
Because it’s such a large displacement engine and because it’s turbo the sound is about 10% from the exhaust and 90% from the engine itself. It’s actually fairly quite once the engine room door is closed tightly
@@ProjectBrupeg perfect👌👌👌. U guys rock, wish you A happy christmastime
The day you finally paint your decks with some non-skid will be a dream. LOL! I cracked up when you called yourself a dickhead!!!
Notice though, with the right charge, how quickly he learnt the mistake!
Just curious Dame why the 90° turn over straight end and rain cap? The straight pipe end does a better job at getting the exhaust as far away from the boat before the wind catches it, on the 90° bends the wind can work against you at times and the exhaust gas can actually drop about a foot or so below the end of the exhaust when the wind is against you. Just my experience with them, just curious what pushed you that direction with your decision, I’m sure there’s a reason.
I did think about a straight pipe and cap. We had this bend and it’s pretty common to do them with a bend. If it’s wrong and we don’t like it we can always cut it off and add more straight and a cap
@@ProjectBrupeg not sure if it's relevant to your exhaust hight but in fume extraction in the UK exhaust stacks need to vent 3m or more above the highest roof line to be outside the buildings 'boundry layer' of disturbed air around the building. Inside the layer fumes can get drawn back into the building, 3m of clearance usually negates this and with a cowl that pushes the exhaust upwards and away too.
Great work. But, Be Careful. You dont need an injury now.
When i saw Jess modelling the exhaust tailpipe i thought someone had changed the channel to QVC!
Jess, so awesome to see you up and about and also working but knowing what your limits are, I really think you are starting to blossom now that Brupeg is in the water, apparently a Mermaid in disguise. It seems so funny that it’s rip, shit and bust to get all these annoying jobs sorted after all the years of sitting on the ground. Damo, in some ways I think it will be good for you to kick back a bit to when you move to your new birth, don’t forget it wasn’t all that long ago that you were crook too, a spell, less stressed will do you the world of good. Have fun guys
Love the videos appreciate your time putting them out. Not to get too personal, I'm curious if there's been a mental change/shift for you having Brupeg in the water and not seeing the full size and scope of the dream and the projects? Does it feel smaller as you don't have to hoist yourself up all the stairs to enter, or move larger items up with the crane. Everything seems while watching to be more at eye level . Thanks Scott
Can you re-enforce the exhaust with some tensioned cables connected to the bracket at one Jess height? Similar to the rigging of a sailboat.
I wonder if you could get condensation issues by pushing cool air over such a large area of exhaust, could this run down and thrash the turbo?
All exhaust on Brupeg have a water trap. But it’s not cold air, it’s hot engine room air pushing past hotter exhaust air. When we shut down there might be a condensation risk but it’s minor and will no doubt evaporate away given the heat we are dealing with
Question Instead of running separate exhausts pipes all the way up could you plumb the exhausts from the generators into the main 6 inch engine exhaust ? Just wondering.
It’s a thing I’ve seen done before.
Damion, great video.
What was the original content of the ammo box? I have a couple of 20mm boxes, have not seen one like yours.
3x81mm illumination rounds for M816 mortar.
Thanks! Wish I had seen them years ago, would have been handy.
I don't know much about exhausts but it seems to me 6 inch is overkill, that's kind of the way you do things overbuilt, therefor couldn't you pipe the gen sets to exhaust through the 6 inch up pipe to reduce the number of pipes protruding through the roof or does that increase the chance of exhaust back flowing into the engine room or is that just not the correct way to do things?
Exhausts are an interesting topic. The general rule of thumb is go one inch larger in pipe diameter than the turbo outlet. For our 5” turbo that means 6” exhaust should flow just right. Adding another pipe inside the main stack can be don’t but it does open up a bunch of risk around back pressure being increased as well as back flow from one engine to another if one isn’t running and the other is. Most commercial boats that I’ve seen always keep the exhausts seperate as it eliminates the risk around these two things. I don’t know enough about exhausts to know if I could combine them without issue so we will be keeping them seperate so we know we won’t have any drama down the road. We might be wrong but extra pipes out the roof is of no concern to us.
You used to use Bunnings rust converter. What are you using now? Looks silver on my phone. Cheers.
Still the same stuff. Its good value and lasts a long time
That looks painful, using the plasma cutter while wearing shorts. That's real man stuff.
So... 1 Standard Jess = 1/2 a cubit ???
Or 3 parsec’s
Did Damien call himself a "Deckhead?"
I would like to see the ends of that bollard cross piece blanked off. Looks unfinished as is, and not in keeping with the high standard of engineering achieved elsewhere. Even over engineered comes to mind.
Is it better to point the pipe to the side?
Hey Dame where are you going to be Base here in NZ
No NZ base on the cards. Once we leave Aussie we will keep steaming
Hey guys live your videos love the project but why are all your playlists sorted newest to oldest cous its a pain when you want to watch old seasons chronological?

So what is the perfect Jess height? To the nearest mm or faction of inch! 😂 I have a friend that use to clean charter yachts to super yacht standard, we called it Iris Clean! Just need to know so we can put it in as an AS/NZ standard 😃
What is the perfect Jess height? I would say 1. Any less and she just isn’t all there and anymore and it’s a bit too much. So I would like to propose we adopt AS/NZ J1 as our unit of measure from here forward
Bit disapointed that An Aussie boat, Built in Australia, Sunk in Australia, Rebuilt in Australia is Registered in New Zealand. I get it, but im still a bit disapointed
Maybe if an Aussie put the time, effort and finances in to get it back in the water it would be….
@@bentaylor1999 Im sure plenty of Aussies put money into it, I didnt say i was against it, just felt a bit dissapointed by it, I mean you didnt see them carting it off to NZ to restore it over there did ya?
It’s an issue of the cost of Australian registration and the restrictions of rules around it. We’re just making sure we do the right thing for everyone who supports us and what we need to achieve in the future. Australian registration is very expensive and restrictive compared to NZ. It’s nice for us to have a connection to our home too.
@@ProjectBrupeg Ok thank you for the explanation, Makes perfect sense, keep up the good work
