The best defense to the can opener is to extend your hips before the latch on to your neck all the way.

    Well taught! Nice option.

If I get one defense for the can opener, this isn't it. Comes on quick. A small guy needs a better defence. Not everything needs a finish as the counter. Sometimes the higher percentage escape is the better option. In my opinion.

Do you see any problems with transitioning to the omoplata if you lose the armbar?
    Thank you.

Looks like it would work, but I suggest trying ude getame on the free arm (uke's left arm in this video) if you lose the arm bar. In fact I'm tempted to play with one of my arms holding his nearside elbow in ude and my other hard pulling on the arm bar at the same time when I try this move out. I imagine uke's arm trapped in ude getame would act like a kickstand in front of him preventing a stacking defense. Double trouble tap in the gym or double snap on the street. Fun fun fun!

Thanks. It's very important to know defenses to attacks that are not allowed at my gym. Is transition to dead orchard a good defense option here instead of transition to armbar?

It would be rough and very attribute based. The can opener would already be curling your spine in, throwing a variation of rubber guard would compound that.

@@sbgipdx Thanks very much. I love your videos. Quick suggestion, your closed guard posture breakdown series th-cam.com/video/hPGX35BMyY0/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=caneprevost is the very best I've seen. However, either you or your daughter should have worn a white gi because it's hard to tell where your arms are. Also, perhaps add some SBG tags (it's posted under your Cane Prevost account) to that video series so people searching under SBG will find it. It's so good.

Your partner is demonstrating a poor car opener. His knees should be off the mat when he shoots in to grab your head. Of course if he simply reaches out he will get arm barred. He should rock forward on his feet then rock back to his knees.

Doesn't change the counter. Try it with a friend. If you are having trouble, film it and we will check it out.

Don’t underestimate a good eye gouge in a self defense situation. Lol
