  • Hiking Lower Calf Creek Falls Trail - Grand Staircase Escalante, Utah
Here's a short video showing you what to expect if you want to hike Lower Calf Creek Falls in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. This hike is fairly straightforward, featuring great views of a gorgeous canyon. And what hike would be complete without a 130' waterfall at the end as the payoff?
Lower Calf Creek Falls is one of the more popular hikes in the area, and for good reason. It's very accessible, with a paved road right to the trailhead. The trail itself is mellow; only 5.5 miles total (out and back) and ~500 feet elevation gain. The waterfall is located in a nice grotto, shaded by trees and the surrounding cliffs. There are campgrounds at the trailhead (backpacking is not permitted), making it an even more fun destination.
We went in the winter to avoid the crowds. And I'm certain it's crowded in the summer months, when swimming holes (and waterfalls) are in high demand.
The waterfall was more impressive than I imagined. The hike was fun and simple. Even the drive in was beautiful. What more could you ask for?

At 10 seconds in, that section of Highway is crazy! I've only been on it a couple times, but it's burned into my memory.

I was waiting for it from the last time we went through. It's absolutely insane how it drops off on both sides. I had my camera ready this time through.

Dude... beautiful! Informative video, the little details on the hiking trail / entry fee. just searching the town Escalante Utah hiking trails. I’ll be looking to “unplug” sometime next year, getting away from New York and escaping to the mountains. Looking for Airbnb’s nearby.

Look into Hole in the Rock Road. Coyote Gulch, Zebra Slot Canyon, Peek a Boo/Spooky Gulch, Reflection Canyon, Red Breaks (?), Cosmic Ashtray, Neon Canyon/the Cathedral....been to a lot of those and have videos for about half. Right nearby. Also Capitol Reef, Bryce and of course Zion. Page/Lee's Ferry are reasonably close. You could spend months out there. I usually camp, so not a lot of info on Airbnb's. Ironically, I'm working on an idea about something similar though. Just spent the weekend at the Ranger Cabin by Petrified Forest and it was awesome!

I went there in 2008 the day of my birthday and on the road before arriving to the trail an eagle took off in front of my van I was alone at calf creek falls in mid october and pyctos on the far right on the trail.

This is an excellent hike in the summer. Get there EARLY as the parking area is small and it is first come/first served and get packed quickly. The trail is exposed in the summer so be prepared and bring plenty of water.

Never heard of it until now. 270' rap? I'd need to get more rope for that.

My wife and I have watched so many of your videos and I think they’re great. We’ve done some of your hikes and like to trail run them. I’m headed up to Escalante this coming weekend do you have a suggestion for me?

Man, Escalante is great. Hole in the Rock Road. Peek a Boo/Spooky Gulch, Coyote Gulch, Devils Garden (really just a stop off the road), Zebra Slot Canyon was great (might be wet though), Reflection Canyon (hard hike; probably best backpacked)....I have videos for all those except Reflection Canyon. Also Red Breaks/Cosmic Ashtray (on the list, haven't made it yet). All of those are off Hole in the Rock Road. Coral Pink Sands is kind of in the area. Also Lower Calf Creek Falls (have a video on that one too.) I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty. Watch it on Hole in the Rock though. The main road (and Spooky/Zebra/Devils) are all accessible by any car, but some of the other stuff you want something that can handle deep sand/rougher roads. And it would be a mess if it was wet.
