  • I recently had to build two sets of stairs for a wooden deck and decided to try two different designs to find out which one is easier to build. I also messed up a lot during this process, enjoy!

I love the all-thread used as a spacer for the saw jaws. I will need to do that with mine.

At the first look, this is a simple video about making some silly stairs.
At the second look, this is a really great video about making and doing failures and learning from it, plus a ton of helpful tips and tricks about metal fabrication.
    Your channel is really underrated.

I like this channel because I came for material saving tips, and instead got a crazy number of bandsaw tips. Happens every video. Come for one benefit, gain two. Thanks Phil!

There is a formula that makes stairs comfortable. It is 2h + b = 63cm. That means that the height of the stair multiplied by 2, added to the depth of the stair must be equal to 63 cm.

Came to watch some stairs; got a bunch of excellent tips for my saw. Thanks Phil!

Thanks Phil, nice to see you again. I'm not surprised to see your philanthropy, as you are very generous with your time and knowledge with us here on the interwebs. Agreed, we all make mistakes, and you sharing - without making excuses - allows us to learn as well. Another thing that impresses me is how efficient and evolved your workshop has become: it looks comfortable and your workflow is quick and logical, and you're using all the good stuff as it is intended. A joy to watch.

Another good video on mods for this style of bandsaw is from a channel named Pask Makes. The video is titled "Transforming a Budget Machine into the Ultimate High-End Tool". I was pretty sold on the saw watching you use it in previous videos, and I'll likely make some of these when I eventually get one. The aluminium jaws with the thread for holding small parts you've made is genius

I completely agree with being willing to mess up. When I was an machinist apprentice a million years ago I was not willing to mess up and it took a very long time for me to learn to be able to and its still something I struggle with. On another note! At our house we are in desperate need of a new set of stairs down to the basement because the previous owner built the stairs the wrong pitch making them way too shallow and so they end directly at the wall and also don't match the pitch of the ceiling which means you hit your head ever time. I really like both the designs but I feel more confident in my ability to actually make the first set of stairs you made. I'll have to get approval from my girlfriend, but I'd love to build them!

Very nice job Phil. I´ve had the same ''very step'' angle on my stair aswell :) there is a nice formula to get the deep and width of the stairs

Lots of awesome tips for the band saw! I love it! I'm going to try and implement some of these with my Makita dry cut saw.
Also, what did you do with your angle gauge? 9V battery strapped to the back?

Great video(s) where I either learn something, or remember what I'd forgotten. 20:11 _"The very first step to being good at something _*_is to suck at it."_* 😂
That reminded me of the Three Stooges and Curly's advice while eating a grapefruit: *_"If at first you don't succeed, keep on sucking till you do suck seed"_* 🤣

Yeah the main issue with those chinese electronics is that they actually draw power when they're turned off. I mostly put the 9v block because I can actually disconnect it when not in use - so far it's lasted 2 years and shows no sign of stopping

There is one thing you can do to make bandsaw better. The spring system it has for lowering blade down is total trash .What you do is get one of the mal 32 pneumatic cylinders .Double acting ,double port ,length you need to determine based on mounting point. What you do then is connect two ports with a copper tube and install a needle valve for fine control.
After that you make a bypass of that needle valve and install one way valve on it .Also its good to add a drain valve on one of the ports so you can add oil and bleed air .
This way when you lift the saw up oil flows trough one way valve, when saw goes down one way valve prevents the oil form coming trough bypass and forces it to go trough needle valve thus regulating the feeding speed.Copper tube,or plastic tube(if you want to go modern way and dont bother with soldering) should be of inner diameter of 10mm ,cylinder piston should be no lower than 25mm.
Compared to that spring its night and day difference for relatively cheap price.

Making mistakes is how I learn, mostly. For stairs, they should have a MAXIMUM rise (step to step elevation change) of 7-3/4" (200mm) and a MINIMUM run (depth) pf 10" (250mm). And most importantly, the rise must be IDENTICAL for each elevation change. Any variation can cause a trip hazard because your brain is expecting them all to be the same.

If you want to experience some really bad stairs come visit the "Cafe kaputt" in Leipzig. I don't know why but someone in that house project* messed it up in the worst way one can imagine. The landing steps are too small, the height is too low, the supports beneath and also the railings are none existent. If you want to go up comfortably you have to take three steps, which feel like common two steps. We call it the stairs of death. And I still wonder who build something like that.
*The "Cafe kaputt" is only a tenant and not responsible for the stairs. But for everybody curious to see the stairs, I can make a tour... ^^
