Stewart Copeland, in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time!

Andy Summers wrote this song. Wow, not only they had Sting, one of the greatest song writers of all time, but an out of this world gifted drummer and a guitarist that came up with awesome riffs and guitar sounds in every song, and came up with this gem.

it seems a simple 4/4 in the intro instead it's a 6/8 timing with a tricky accent shift. Copeland is a fucking genius.

Stewart tells the story of the recording of this track. He overheard the other two figuring out the music and lyrics at the dinner table, so he ran straight to the studio to start the drum track before they had a chance to tell him how to play it. Sting and Andy come in and start jamming it to Stewart's beat. This is the first and only take. Unbelievable.

Just heard Hugh Padgham on a podcast saying that this is the first and last recording of Murder by Numbers. It was played live right after dinner where Andy started noodling around with those chords, while Sting pulled out some old lyrics to which he added the melody, and then Stewart laid down that groove - live, together! Now that’s talent.

That percussion.....still, everytime, trying to wrap my head around what Stewart's doing. Just the beginning itself is mesmerizing.

Stewart Copeland is incredible. He is always an essential presence in every Polices' song.

Stewart Copeland absolutely KILLING it in this song. Murder you could say ;)

  • @PrimarchX

I love how Stewart Copeland's drums are always present and essential in each Police song. So many rock drummers sort of fade out to providing rhythm and the occasional punch. But Copeland creates drum tracks that are easily the equals of the guitar and bass.
