The engineer Mr. Copeland is talking about is the great Hugh Padgham who has also told this amazing story. The album version of Murder By Numbers was recorded live. It is the one and only take they ever did, and the song didn’t exist 20 minutes before it was recorded. Incredible.
What does he do differently? He doesn't necessarily hold the stick closer to the base than any other match player, is it the angle or tuning of the snare? Or is his shoulder/forearm just that powerful? What do you reckon? I've always been fascinated by it.
@@HeardItOnTheXIt’s probably a combination of a few things, but one of them for sure is the way he holds his stick, he doesn’t use the “correct” traditional grip, instead he rests the stick between his thumb and middle finger instead of the ring finger. He has a philosophy that the thumb has more power than the fingers used in match grip, hence why he prefers the traditional grip
I am from Mintserrat where this songvwas recorded...Sting was always on the beach Wind surfing..and he was a real great guy,who would stop if you are hitching a ride...10.000 ppl lives on my island...
Definitivamente Stewart Copeland é o meu baterista favorito! Diria que essa música é a melhor do álbum Synchronicity e uma pena que tenha ficado de fora na edição original da versão em vinil… e neste novo arranjo, muitos aplausos para a vocalista, hein?! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I'm just glad to see that Stew and Sti h aré un much better terms now.Lile why wouldn't i want that for people who have Made my life better with their art?
he is the Jimi Hendrix of drums, left hander on a normal arranged kit. One of a Kind and yes , I put him ahead of bonzo and peart , I put charlie and ringo right behind him
just watching this video i feel like i finally got the rub between him and sting. he says "sting is genius" then plays this super intricate drum part that your never going to get out of anybody else and in terms of finance and publishing, it's simply not consider genius, and yet in cases with certain drummers it is, you watch just the intro and that is a lot of complex songwriting that stewart copeland is doing, in my opinion it's what makes this song interesting, and he get's no credit or compensation. i bet the drummer in black sabbath knows his pain.
And it was Stewart's band, but Sting essentially took it over. You can always tell when Stewart is playing on a Sting song (even with the amazing drummers Sting has had, like Manu or Vinnie or even Josh). I loved hearing them live in 2007-08, but I'm glad they're done. Watching them fight like hockey players with the gloves off was never fun.
Always was one of my favourite tracks; and always my favourite percussionist,(not just a drummer). Just made all their tracks buzz; With no added unnecessary embellishments, (but they are there),; You can actually hear every single high hat stroke. just feeling the music in every way.(Eat yer heart out Peart and co!). Ringo did the same with,, oh I forget their name now; Perfect for the band, No offence to Sting and the other Andy, but he made them. Took all 3.
I love Stewart’s drumming so much, he's so damn good at what he does it’s just awesome and that’s also the great Armand Sabal-Lecco on bass who’s played with soooooo many greats…. i absolutely love this!!!!!
If I listen passively, the song just goes. But if I pay attention to the drums, I'm confused and amazed AF! It's not in 4/4 time... maybe it's in Pi/15/16 time???? How the hell can he even keep track of it all?
... you've heard of 'channeling' . channelers, people who can channel, right?? . Stewart Copeland is channeling himself . Put that in your pipe and smoke it .
I love Stewart but this song sounds stiff like it isn't very rehearsed. No doubt every musician here is top notch but I don't hear the groove. Maybe just proof of the chemistry the Police had.
I appreciate the effort, but growing up with The Police as a teenager, even buying my own Tama drumkit because Stu played Tama, there simply is not anything that can top the original versions. Also I don't like the overly-dramatic singing of the ladies.
No one... I said NO ONE has quite the same feel as Stewart. It's like Jimi Hendrix. No one can sound like him.
Phukin A ! ! !
Def has a unique sound, made police
Wow!!!😮 I'm blown! How does he still play this well at his age?! Love his rearrangement of this song!! Thanks for posting this!

Murder By Numbers is one of my favourite songs by them and when I found out how it came to be it raised it up a level or two for me.
This is The Police !!!! And The Album is fantastic !!!!!
It took all three of those guys to be legendary.
Exactly, the magic was in the mix, in the push and pull, the "tug of war" which created the incredible and unmatched music they made.
Stewart can hit a snare drum harder with a traditional grip than most drummers can with a match grip. It is astounding.
Sting is a BELL END
@@godparticle4883 Calm down, I was just making an observation, that's all.

Really don't know. Technique maybe? He also tunes his snare way up, which gives it a more loud crack I guess@@HeardItOnTheX

Wow, the drumming is just like in the album. After all these year's he's still amazing ! Thanks for the upload.
He is such a great drummer! Thank goodness he plays still! He has to play those drums for us!!!
One of the greatest of all time. 👍🏻
For me...#2 behind Buddy Rich.
Copeland never ceases to amaze the listener! ❤ As usual!
A genius talking about another genius!
All 3 members of the Police are geniuses. They were a dynamic and original band with a totally unique sound.
I am from Mintserrat where this songvwas recorded...Sting was always on the beach Wind surfing..and he was a real great guy,who would stop if you are hitching a ride...10.000 ppl lives on my island...
that's a really cool perspective. Montserrat seems like a cool place, I would love to come visit sometime. Thanks for your story :)
One and only mr hi hat, STU ..cheers, long live mr Stewart!!!
OMG! This is minutes from my hometown in Lake Villa, IL.
He played this at the London Show, really great!
Tight as always
El mejor, sin dudarlo.
Magic druming ❤❤❤❤
Stewie still got it baby. This vid is a gem❤🌹
Sting is a BELL END

To steal a phrase....Stewart Copeland is "art that moves".
Mario Balotelli is killing the bass.
Stewart Copeland is the Hendrix of drummers
I'm just glad to see that Stew and Sti h aré un much better terms now.Lile why wouldn't i want that for people who have Made my life better with their art?
Masterfully drumming
That singer he got is really really good
Awesome!
he is the Jimi Hendrix of drums, left hander on a normal arranged kit. One of a Kind and yes , I put him ahead of bonzo and peart , I put charlie and ringo right behind him
How did I miss this?😮
Certero y elegante!!! Eres el hombre ❤️
The Michael Jordan of drums
He's the sturat of durms
damn.

Yeah Bill ward is fantastic too. Ozzy in an interview went on about how it's the rhythm section that makes the band.
Jeee-Zussss!
Unbelievable
He is brilliant, so our his cymbals
Wrong singers for such an iconic song.
Wrong mics, too. They sound woofy like 58s.
Need bets 58s@@willl5970

Sting is a genius, of course. But so is Stewart! Two geniuses often won't see eye to eye all the time. The Police were all geniuses.
Armand is the greatest bass player!
Well he is better than that Tool Sting
Sting knew pen and paper
youre a mean one, mr grinch
I love Stewart’s drumming so much, he's so damn good at what he does it’s just awesome and that’s also the great Armand Sabal-Lecco on bass who’s played with soooooo many greats…. i absolutely love this!!!!!
Stew and Andrew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY WONT THEY REUNITE ONE MORE TIME FOR US!
they tried, they hate each other musically now lol
he's a police man!
Copeland needs a police fix...they need one more police tour..andy is already 80.
The original version is so goddamn brilliant this doesn’t even come close.
He's not trying to copy the original version.
I wonder if Sting was referring to gematria? The song was released in1983 and in gematria murder=83.
Funny coincidence!
If I listen passively, the song just goes. But if I pay attention to the drums, I'm confused and amazed AF! It's not in 4/4 time... maybe it's in Pi/15/16 time???? How the hell can he even keep track of it all?
You could think of it in 4 and count as triplets, or as 6, or 12.
PROG
No joke…this is an awesome new accompaniment but it could use a triangle
HMMmmmm.. ALL ME ... ALL ME ~
These dudes are out on the road with musicians playing Police songs?
Stewart was Danny Carey before Danny Carey was Danny Carey. 😜😜
how can you fit a tablet in a someone's coffee?!
It's very easy but the act of a scum bag
Kind of him to put the kick on 1 😂
... you've heard of 'channeling' . channelers, people who can channel, right?? .
Stewart Copeland is channeling himself .
Put that in your pipe and smoke it .
Nice, but I think I still prefer the Zappa version (with Mr Sting).
uhh
Stewart a master and spectacular talent!! But, who is singing?? To me, is destroying the art from Copeland.
I love Stewart but this song sounds stiff like it isn't very rehearsed. No doubt every musician here is top notch but I don't hear the groove. Maybe just proof of the chemistry the Police had.
Hubiera sido mejor con la voz de un hombre
Nice drumming but the song doesn't work with these singers.
Missing the little machine gun 5 strokers
I appreciate the effort, but growing up with The Police as a teenager, even buying my own Tama drumkit because Stu played Tama, there simply is not anything that can top the original versions. Also I don't like the overly-dramatic singing of the ladies.
