@@CodyKloepfer Yes but unless you want to take the company to court, they'll still take the risk most of the time and tell you, your warranty is void.
Basically they're betting on you not actually taking them to court over it. Aka they simply don't care what the legal status is, until someone slaps them with a serious fine per violation. Thus the law that says it's not legal, is effectively worthless.

I waited 23 years to get a silent computer and switched from a Ryzen 5 2600 GTX 2060 HTPC (had the quietest BeQuiet fans and semi-passive components in it).

Perhaps someone below already brought this to your attention, but I'll mention it again in case no one has: A 'silent,' fan-less machine w/decent specs would be quite wonderful in a home/project studio environment, esp. in situations where desktop space is at a premium, there is no separate control room or some recording is done regularly in the same room w/the computer. In my case, I have a 2014 Mac Mini. It's way under-powered compared to the NUC and takes up a noticeable chunk or real estate. (Having something like this project would be AMAZING for me. I'm hoping to get funds together and build one in the next year or two.)

Followed instructions but deviated by using the NUC8i7BEH and a 2 TB SSD (fits on included bracket above mobo) for storing music, creating a Roon music server under Mojave OS.
Build only uses Ethernet connection (there is no WiFi/BT; left disabled). Only running Roon app 24/7 (screen saver turned off since normally using without a monitor or mouse or keyboard). Computer is configured to auto log on boot, then auto run Roon (Roon controlled by iPhone app through WiFi router/Ethernet connection).
CPU temps run 36 to 40°C with unit sitting on a tiled floor (case is barely warm). The NVMe drive (with own heat sink as instructed) and SSD give temps of 34 to 36°C. So the cooling is excellent for all parts. These temps should provide many years of longevity. The whole unit uses just under 5W of power; very efficient. (All data from HWMonitorSMC2, using VirtualSMC + associated kexts.)
This is a fantastic build. Thanks SnazzyLabs!

I followed the link for the Akasa Turing Case and it went to Amazon Japan and it's listed at 60,580 Yen or USD$560 thereabouts. Once you add that expense in, it's significantly closer to the Mac Mini. Also, I have an 8i3BEK, and one of the things I prize a lot for the NUC is its small form factor. The case immediately nullifies that at an additional US$560. I'm not sure how many folks would make this trade off for a totally silent NUC which, if you're not stressing it, it not very loud anyway.

Adding the heatsink to the SSD might actually hurt the temperatures if you position the case upright. The fins of the SSD heatsink are positioned in horizontal direction, whereas the airflow due to natural convection is always in vertical direction. Whether it helps or hurts the temperatures really depends on the heatsink geometry but in this configuration circulating air pockets may form between the fins which will actually insulate the heatsink.
I'm curious if you've tested the difference with the heatsink and without and if the orientation of the case influences the SSD temperature.

Also the PSU is going to be much smaller than a desktop PC as well. Thermal is probably the least of the worries when overclocking a NUC.

If I'm not mistaken NVMe SSDs shouldn't stay excessively cool when running because that actually shortens their lifespan: while writing to them, the heat reduces damage to the cells and many manufacturers add heating elements to ensure that the cells are warm enough while performing a write.
In this case it was probably a good idea to put a heatsink on it since there is no active cooling but in traditional desktop cases where you have fans, it's more than enough to keep an NVMe drive at a good temperature and adding a heat spreader will do more harm than good.

11:05 " and that's it" well not quite, there is a lot of trial and error a lot frustration, and you also have to patch a DSDT file to make sure that the "drivers" are enabled to work, I am posting this comment from a hackintosh right now and my headphone jack still doesn't work, it all depends on the model of computer you decide to hackintosh and the type of computer, you decide to hackintosh, the intel NUC seems quite easy to hackintosh, that is because it is, but if you try to modify any other "non-modular" system it could be much, much harder. Quinn I appreciate your work and your dedication to the hackintosh community, keep up the good work!👍

thermal-dynamics laws will say that vertical is the preferred way to be because of natural convection currents created by a rise of hot air. me personally, i would surround the fins with black cloth or something aesthetic so that air is forced to actually flow through the bottom and out the top. the hotter it gets, the more efficient it becomes.

I may go hackintosh the next build. I had a 2011 mac book pro, I did some upgrades to it, 16gb ram from 8gb, took out the cd drive and replaced both the hard drive and cd drive with 2 ssd's 512 gb, etc. I only run logic pro x on it, it was fine. I then upgrade to the latest macbook pro BEFORE the touchbar, and that's a 2015 model, it's great. Has 16 GB ram, 3.6 ghz cpu and 512 gb storage. Biggest difference is it has 2 USB 3.0 ports, an hdmi port and 2 thunderbolt ports (which I don't use). I keep dual externals that are mirrored on 1 usb 3.0 port and it's fast as hell.
Eventually, I guess I'll upgrade. The problem I have is I'm locked into Logic Pro X for so many projects, I can't just dump it and go to say Ableton (a much much more expensive platform, and frankly a piece of crap in comparison I think). The issue I have with Hackintosh's is you basically have to build one out, then you have to make sure you clone that drive before you upgrade - or you might lose everything. Also obtaining mac software is a pain, and you can't just update it via app store etc. Maybe things have changed, but this was 2 years ago last I tried a hackintosh, dunno.

I will admit I'm an unapologetic hackintosh gatekeeper. I really don't like how mainstream hackintoshing is becoming. Apple is definitely taking notice. I'm sure they are accelerating their plans for macOS to become like iOS. i.e. only usable on specialized hardware/processors with a bunch of security chips. I don't want that.
Hackintoshing is an extremely nerdy passtime, and as people like Linus and Quinn (as much as I love them) try to make it easy for people to hackintosh, the people that want a free Mac experience will jump in without realizing how much legwork they will have to put in on their own to get there.

Hey Quin, or anyone who knows hackintoshing, I was wondering if I built out my Gigabyte AERO 15x as a hackintosh, if audio drivers and such would still be an issue? I know in Windows, audio mixing and editing in DAWs can be a pain, but specifically Ableton is just way more optimized on macos. But I enjoy Windows and gaming too much to sell my laptop for it. are there app issues between building a hackintosh, or is it really a guarantee that itll work the same?

The SD card slot seems like a huge oversight on the design. One ribbon cable to full SD Card, and a small modification of the case design and manufacturing later and you would have a functional SD card reader. Which, knowing that one of the reasons for mac is Final Cut Pro and that you need to import media, doesn't seem like a bad addition.

Why bother with the $140 boat anchor passively cooled case? I have an i5 gigabyte brix that is essentially silent that I use as a VM server. When taxed at 100% CPU I've never heard it's fan from less than 6 feet away.
Just not sure I understand spending $140 on a case that only adds cost, is significantly larger, takes away a microsd slot with extremely little benefit in regards to lowering what already is a very quiet product.
