    What do you get at the Farmer's Market?

    • @bearvalleyfibres
      @bearvalleyfibres 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honeysuckle I love the farmers market but I very picky, a lot of them are not farmers but resellers! They get their stuff from the food terminals where your grocery store gets them. So I am careful!
      I buy lots of vegetables, fruit, herbs, eggs, honey, maple syrup, flowers and here in Ontario we can buy wine. :-)

      When the egg yolk is bright orange, the chickens are fed with carotin (to MAKE it orange, because customers think it's more healthy). Organic eggs (in Germany) have a yellow eggyolk because they are fed with natural things only.

    That avocado looks delicious! One caution about planting mint - put it in a container before planting it in the ground because it will take over everything if its root are allowed to grow free. For real.

    As far as I know, it's mainly the feed that determines the yolk color. So an orange yolk isn't a guarantee for a healthier egg; if you add a dye to the feed, it gives the yolk a deeper color. :/ I don't know if it changes with age or not. The white does, I believe - if you boil a fresh egg, the whites will typically cling to the shell and patches will come off the egg as you peel it, while older eggs typically peel nicely without missing bits.

    Save a few sprigs of the Thai basil for planting. Take a few sprigs with at least one level of leaves (two best), do a fresh cut on the bottom and put them in a jar of water and it will sprout roots for planting. You can eventually let one of them mature to provide seeds for more planting.

    Omg! I’ve never been able to find Thai basil either! I’m originally from San Diego but moved to Florida where it’s even harder to find these types of ingredients. But when I bought pho recently, I planted the stems of the Thai basil in the ground just like you prob did with that mint and they grew so well!! Try it with those stems!! The stems look super healthy so plant them and you’ll have your own stash!

    We don't have a farmer's market where I live but we do have a County Market but it doesn't sell the same stuff. It sells bread and carrots and potatoes etc,etc. It also sells handmade knitted dolls and clothes. Not the same fruit and veg as you get because it's too cold to grow where I live. My auntie bought us a knitted Nativity set for Christmas once. Thanks for reading.😃

    i love the hollywood farmers market! but if you go to santa monica, try to go to the market on arizona ave that happens Wednesdays, vs the weekend market. I've spoken with the farmers there before, apparently the rules of that market are different, and they can bring some super specialized produce that they are unable to bring to other LA area farmer's markets. it is more expensive then the other markets as well, but such a great occasional experience if you find a lot of joy in seeing seasonal produce. thanks so much for this video, i love seeing your content about local things in SoCal! keep up the awesome work :)

    ive gone to the hollywood farmers market on sundays and it's pretty good. the studio city farmers market is the best one in the valley. i live in santa monica so i am partial to the one here (make sure you go to the WEDNESDAY farmers market). this market is different than most because its 99% fresh produce. maybe 1 or 2 bread stands. no hot food. i also don't recall ever seeing live demos? but i also go right when it opens around 8am so i can get first pick of the produce. def worth checking out!

    The smaller the egg is (the chicken one) the younger the chick is! Thats what i was told in the local farmers market :) i've never seen an avocado like this! Almost as big as a watermelon hahaha Here in Russia we have only regular small and bright green ones shaped like a pear 🥑
    And the basil...have you seen the purple one? It is much more chewy and has more fiber in it, it also provides its dark purple color to other food mixed with it))) and i know that in Armenia they cook a bevarage from it they boil it with lemon and ugar and recieve a nice pink 'compote'? Sassy water? Dont know the english word for it.
    I LOVE farmers bread, sometimes try to bake it myself to copy the recipe and i really like how DIY-sh it looks then)))

    Another good place to get Asian herbs are the Chinese markets in San Gabriel/Rosemead area: Good supermarkets are Hawaii supermarket and Great Wall supermarket. Or Vietnamese supermarkets in Westminster/Santa Ana: ABC supermarket. They have fresh Asian herbs like Thai basil and bok choy for cheap. Boy choy is usually $0.59-$0.89/lb. good luck

    The bright color isn't a sign for quality. Mostly it is a artificially colorant they feed the chickens. In Germany it is forbidden for organic farmer to give this to chicken. Due to that organic eggs are less yellow / orange.

  • @superEN30
    @superEN30 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    With eggs I'm pretty sure the more orange the yolk is the better the diet of the chicken. The colour comes from "Carotenoids" and "xanthophylls" which are more present in natural foods rather than processed feed, and the orange yolks also tend to have higher levels of omega-3, and also less 'bad cholesterol' (not all cholesterol is bad for you). There is very little change in nutritional value, but the chickens that produce eggs with darker yolks are more likely to be healthier as they have a more varied diet, this is also a good clue to see if the eggs are from free range chickens.

    I live in the great lakes area ..upper midwest. Just got some beautiful fresh dill, red ruby radishes, chives, cucumbers, corn and fresh peachesand artesian rosemary bread, love the farmers market. Thank you for sharing your experience. To answer your question, color of yolk is due to the diet of the chicken.

    When I buy eggs I buy from a farm. Sometimes they are two yolks in it. And when you boil them and then cut them up, the egg yolks become eights.

  • @SeriouslyBadElf
    @SeriouslyBadElf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    no, the color is just based on what the chickens eat. I dont think it has more nutrients or anything. Hass avocados have more nutrients than the tropical ones but its probably because it is smaller + denser

    The depth of color of the egg yolks depend on the specific diet of the chicken.

    • @Isabella66Gracen
      @Isabella66Gracen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The more protein the chicken consumes while free range feeding, the darker the yolk. Chickens are actually omnivores, and they love insects, worms, grubs etc. Grasses and plants will also produce a darker yolk than grains.

    There's only one thing that makes me sad...the amount of plastic bags! It's "Plastic Free July"! Just try not to take so many plastic bags! I get it as my mums says the same about my cats' litter but it just makes this plastic double-use, not single-use and it still ends-up in landfill. I just encourage you to invest in some produce bags! I love shopping with my mesh ones- it makes buying fruits and veggies so much more enjoyable when you know you're making something good

    Mint grows like a weed pretty easily.. I love Farmer's Market but it is NEVER a good deal. You don't go to Farmer's Market to look for a deal. I agree with you on the fruit being super sweet and usually very ripe but pricey. Asian veggies I would think are cheaper at places like H-Mart or other asian grocery stores.

    • @roserobb
      @roserobb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sophie Bakall There can be good deals if you find the right market! The Haymarket farmers market in Boston has prices that are consistently 1/2 to 1/4 of retail (e.g. 1 lb of strawberries for $1 rather than $2.50 on sale at a grocery store)

    • @SBakall2
      @SBakall2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And in Chicago, those strawberries are $5. I go to farmers markets all the time and I have rarely found a deal on anything., but that's not going to deter me from going because I also find a variety of things that I wouldn't find in the grocery store.
