  • Follow along as I try to not go swimming while paddling across a gusty Gunflint Lake in the Superior National Forest and enter the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness via the Magnetic Lake entry point. I originally wanted to do the whole Granite River Route but after getting a late start, and then getting stuck in a back bay of Gunflint for an hour while I waited for the wind to die down (it never did), I decided to just make it a simple overnight out and back. It's some extremely beautiful country and an incredibly sentimental area to me so I am already making plans to be back in a few weeks.
This video was shot and edited a little differently than my "normal" tripping videos (all 2 of them currently 😂). I forgot the clamp for my GoPro Hero 9 so all footage was handheld for that, and that meant I have very little footage of my sketchy lake crossing. I wish I had some footage of that. This was my first time using the Fujifilm X-S10 too. I absolutely LOVE the video files this camera produces using just the Eterna profile and then my Lut Preset slapped on it. The added in-body stabilization is great for my needs too. After some adjustment of the settings I was able to get the autofocus right where I liked when using the Viltrox 23mm 1.4.
This trip and video didn't go exactly as planned that that is ok. It's all part of the fun of being in the wilderness.

Sketchy portage trails...I bet you are glad you got the Blacklight for the Northstar and saved 10 lbs. Love that wood on the boat. I would have just hung at that campsite till someone threw me out... thanks for the trip. Kinda a geezer now and don't know if I could handle the portages but that makes me wan tot try.

So glad you got to finally explore the granite river. This is our go to route every year ☺️

Loved hearing the white throated sparrows at around 10:25. That sound is as authentically "BWCA" as the sound of loons for me.

    That campsite is amazing.
I know the feeling of being fortunate to be outdoors in a place like that. Fortunate is the right word for it.
Thanks for bringing us along with you.

This video brings back so many memories! My relatives have a cabin on Snowbank and last year my sister and I portaged through several surrounding lakes and had a wonderful time! And I have also been on Snowbank trying to paddle when the wind was so bad there were white caps! I can soooo relate to this video!

Nice adventure brother! Really enjoyed the video! Taking my first BWCA trip in September of 2022 and your video has me even more excited! I've started my own you tube channel. Not as quality as yours but I'm still learning. If you get some time see what you think. Cheers and thanks for sharing!

Hi. I was wondering what you think of the Northwind Solo canoe? You see, I want to buy one, but live too far away from a retailer to test one. Also, I'm a big and heavy guy and worried about overloading the boat. Can you share your experience about how much load the Northwind can take? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What time of year was this trip? It looked like the bugs weren’t too bad. Can’t wait to get there myself in the BW👍

This was the beginning of June. Bugs were actually pretty terrible at camp but that’s part of the fun 🤩
