- ABRSM 2023 & 2024 - Grade 3 Piano exam - C:3 The Entertainer ~ Scott Joplin
The American musician Scott Joplin was the most famous composer and performer of ragtime - an early type of jazz (c.1896-1918), mainly written for solo piano, and composed rather than improvised. The main characteristic of ragtime is its 'ragged' (that is, syncopated) rhythm over a steadily moving bass. The Entertainer is one ofJoplin's best-known rags.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 126 bpm.
The piece featured here is only an arrangement and is essentially a stripped-back and much more basic version of The Entertainer by Scott Joplin.
This piece is mainly to be played legato (smoothly) in the right hand, but the left hand part can have a little more bounce, in keeping with the Ragtime style of the music.
Dynamics are straightforward and uncomplicated, but it would be a good idea to practise the left hand part a lot - until it becomes very easy to play as a self-contained part, otherwise trying to play hands together too early on in the learning process could be tricky, especially if you haven’t played much Ragtime music before!
Having started to learn this I can only agree regarding the left hand
Can i ask, please I fortunately taught myself to play the original entertainer full performance ( this performance is very good 👍,)I just wondered what grade would the original entertainer be out of curiosity, thanks for sharing video.

Quite surprise that ABRSM took The Entertainment as exam piece. Thought ABRSM used to choose unfamous song as exam piece
Starting with their release of the 2021-2022 syllabus, ABRSM now strives to choose a wider and more diverse range of repertoire so that there is "something for all." I believe this song is part of the effort.

Amazing that my 8 year old girl can play this
I can do it too because of youb😊😊
Thanks for the info
Hi Master Keyz, may I know why the left hand does not play together with the right in the beginning as stated on the score?
Hi Adeline, the fingering suggestion at the beginning of this piece was something I felt was a little unnecessary, so I chose to play each of those three phrases with my right hand only, but you can of course choose to play the first note of bars 1, 2 & 3 with your left hand if you prefer. (as written) Sometimes the suggested fingering in books isn’t always the only way (or best way) to this play phrases. On the introduction of the original version it actually has all the notes of those first three bars played in the right hand - and the left hand plays the same idea an octave lower.
@@masterkeyz959 yes, thanks for clarifying
I love this song so happy it'll be in my exam
I am on grade 3 I always play it❤❤❤

You 3rd graders are lucky
Thanks😂❤
I love that❤🎉 it is very good🥹
OMG thank you!then it is so cute
❤ you are smart🎉😊
I love ur vids and songs.
This is a pretty good rendition of the arrangement. Just think a bit of variation in the articulation of the ragged bass might be in order. I see what you’re trying to do, making the bass and harmony sound like separate lines, but there’s more nuance to it than just making every note detached.
Wow
so good
I’m learning this song!
me too! so difficult 😞
@@mommyblogger4652 agree!
Thx:)
I’m trying grade 3 and I can’t even play this at 0.5 speed 😢
It's ok
I get it lol. I used to be stuck on grade 2 lol but now I'm in grade
Don't worry bro, practice makes perfect. I've been practising this piece for more than a year now good luck for your exam.
Don’t worry you’ll get there I was stuck on this for like 7 months
I love your videos
How long dod this take you to learn? Im just wondering!
我4級了❤❤❤不過這首歌,我媽媽也叫我重新學🎉🎉🎉
oh noo i did the grade 3 syllabus just before this one so i missed this piece 😭😭
I personally think watching at normal speed is a bit too slow, so l kinda prefer watching at 1.75x speed! But this is only my opinion, so suit yourself.
Tysm
Who picked the song of twilight 😀 explain your experience if you have done the left hand and right hand 👏 bc if u have done it with no mistakes I praise u
I love Song of Twilight. It’s hard, but beautiful. I’m learning piano as a very later starter, in my 70s. I’ve zero natural talent, and it takes me forever to learn a piece. I have to read the music - can’t remember a thing, and the scales are a nightmare as I so often forget which one I’m doing, even in the middle of it! After years of practice, I managed grade one this year (and was stunned to manage a distinction despite making errors in all three of my pieces - a distinction only achieved my getting full marks in the aural - the one section where you don’t play a note!). Nevertheless, because it takes me so long to learn anything, I find it best to work on the next grade very slowly alongside the current grade, almost as a supplementary exercise. I’m taking Grade 2 in February, but have been very slowly running grade 3 alongside it, just working on the fingering, and at a very basic level. As it happens Twilight has come along really quickly - far better than expected, as has the Vivace ( let’s not mention the rest!). By this time next year it should be ok - even with its manic level of pedalling, ready for me to do the exam at the end of 2024 or the start of 2025. As soon as the new grade 4 comes out, next spring, I’ll buy that and start working on it, expecting to take that exam the following year. But all credit to those studying grade 3 who are doing Hansel and Gretal - the amount of key changes - tough ones too - is insane.
Thanks for the video, it has been really helpful and my exam is soon.
Is this the normal tempo for this piece? I think i have been practising playing it way too fast as im pretty sure the original is a bit faster than this.
Sounds so simple yet beautiful. Lucky grade 3 people😂😂😂😂
I'm currently learning this song, and it's SO FUN!
I'm probably gonna fail my exam because of this song, I only lernt the first page and first line of the scond page, it's pretty fun to play, but I'm worried about the left hand 😭😭😭
The f sharps second half. Are they all or are they not all sharpened. They are meant to be sharpened till naturalised. Unsure totally on this
i remembered my grade 3 songs were never this easy hahaha! At grade 4 the contestants last time already played Bumblebee, Fantasia and Mendellsohn's Rondo Capricciosso Op 14.
nice 😃
im doing it, syncopation is so hard.
I went to pick my c piece when i was 9 last year and i already new it a different way
One second, can anyone tell me in the music sheet if *the first 3 bars* After *D, E, C, A...* Now! are there *two A's?* Yeah there are but in the video it's not there 😵
Do we have to play *two A's* or just *one A* as given in the video?
Someone, please *tell me as fast as you can!*
I am in year 7 in piano😊
I’m currently working on this😭
Tysm I legit got the entire song's rythm wrong until I saw this vid 😭
Wait how does that even sound?
