  • This is the planning document I used to plan 3 VERY successful houseboat trips to Lake Powell. While this is specific to Lake Powell, the strategies and resources in this video (and in the links below) can be used to plan a houseboat trip to any lake.

Nice presentation and planning document and advice. Especially good advice in the cost recovery section. As a houseboater for over 25 years, I've personally not had any problems with everyone's payment, but it's mostly family and really close friends on my trips. The one time I captained a boat for a good friend and his friends (who I did not know), I, as you recommended presented a non-refundable buy-in on the trip, and they appreciated the overpayment refund I sent them. I think you nailed all the considerations for a trip. Since we're mostly family on the trips, I tell everyone they have to contribute to the chores, and I invite them to do what they want. For those who didn't contribute much, I would give them a warning that future invites would depend on their participation - it worked! I think the only thing I could recommend in your planning guide would be to specify the Lake level when recommending a 'campsite' - the Lake is different depending on that level. By the way, I like the rake recommendation - I never thought about that but since you mentioned it, it certainly would have been useful!
For 18 of those years, I had shared ownership in two houseboats (Southern Belle and Desert Breeze). The key is finding a houseboat with a great - not good, great - management and maintenance program. My ROI on both of them was less than 4 years as compared to a nearly comparable - the amenities are far better on a shared ownership boat - annual rental boat . Plus, everyone is an owner so they all tend to take care of the boat better than do the renters! (As I live in Florida the trip would be too costly for any trips of less duration than 7 days.)

Thank you for all this information. We go as a family so the monetary part doesn't apply but seems feasible. but the finding a campsite and the estimating fuel costs are great!! thanks so much.

PS, I am so glad I watched this...I admit I imagined us parked in the middle of the lake and "camping there" didn't realize we would beach camp!

Nice work. Good luck with your channel. Time to step up to ownership. Then you can do a whole new video on the modifications to your spreadsheet!

Typically for lunch I just put in deli sandwiches / hamburger / hot dogs (hamburgers hot dogs will be an early dinner in the trip, w/ the extra stuff ready for anybody who want.s to cook the, selves lunch later)

What are your thoughts on renting from bullfrog vs wahweap marina? We just rented one from bullfrog (chose this because it's a shorter driving distance from us) but I'm realizing the biggest area of the lake is over by Wahweap. I've read conflicting things online, some saying there are more of the sight seeing perks closer to Bullfrog...I am going with a bunch of college friends so we would like to be near the action. Thanks in advance!

Where did you rent your run about/speed boat from in Page?

Great video thanks, only critique would be NOT to include your guests in the Deposit fee. Just foot it yourself and you won't have to worry about returning it. Besides, if you fuck up the boat, they aren't gonna be paying for it...lol

Why do house boats have a limit of people that can be on the boat at all times? Are they strict about that?

The number of life jackets needs to equal the number of people on the boat. I think as long as you bring extra life jackets you will not have a problem, but I would confirm that with the coast guard. Also, the rental agency lists the rentals by the number of people the hosts can sleep. But if your camping on the beach, who cares. Lastly it’s probably to prevent party boats.
