Houseboat Planning Notebook - Stay Organized and Informed On Lake Powell (Anywhere)
This is a quick overview of the planning notebook that I bring with me on all my houseboat trips. It's your job as the captain to be Johnny-on-the-spot with everything related to the trip, so having this with you is essential.

Yeti vs Polar Camel Lake Tumbler from Houseboatkings.com | Ice Test
มุมมอง 6K5 ปีที่แล้ว
We put our tumblers to the test against the most popular tumbler on the market. You've all heard of Yeti, but you may not know about the Polar Camel from HouseboatKings.com. The build quality between these two is absolutely identical, and after doing the ice test we could see the insulation was exactly the same as well. The Yeti accessories can even fit on the Polar Camel tumblers.

    Typically for lunch I just put in deli sandwiches / hamburger / hot dogs (hamburgers hot dogs will be an early dinner in the trip, w/ the extra stuff ready for anybody who want.s to cook the,selves lunch later)

    I enjoyed every minute of this informative video! Such great information! Really appreciate it and the spread sheet is so great. I feel so fortunate to have stumbled upon it and glad you made it easy to copy and use. Thanks so much! This will be our 4th trip to Powell and the way you pull all of the useful info together is a game changer!

    What are your thoughts on renting from bullfrog vs wahweap marina? We just rented one from bullfrog (chose this because it's a shorter driving distance from us) but I'm realizing the biggest area of the lake is over by Wahweap. I've read conflicting things online, some saying there are more of the sight seeing perks closer to Bullfrog...I am going with a bunch of college friends so we would like to be near the action. Thanks in advance!

    Great video thanks, only critique would be NOT to include your guests in the Deposit fee. Just foot it yourself and you won't have to worry about returning it. Besides, if you fuck up the boat, they aren't gonna be paying for it...lol

    Great video. As someone who is coming to the lake for the first time a few questions: 1. How I find my way along the way and back 2. Are there gas stations along the route? 3. Is there a way to get to the Antelope Canyon by boat? Thanks in advance, Eran

    • @JessePlautz
      @JessePlautz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Download the Navionics App, or get a handheld GPS. 2. No. There are only gas stations at the marinas. The route I am outlining did not have gas stations along the route. 3. No. Antelope Canyon is easily accessible from land though.

    What he says is true. There is no point in asking for specific recommendations for campsites for the exact reasons he has explained. But you do need to have a good idea of what you are looking for in general. Do you want a big wide open sandy beach for kids and dogs to run wild? Those are VERY rare at Powell and someone else will usually have it staked out already. Honestly, you'd probably be happier at Lake Mead if that's what you really want. Do you just want a safe shady spot to park the houseboat so you can take off in the speed boats and go exploring? Hey! That's what Lake Powell is really all about. Motor that houseboat as fast and far away from the marinas as you can get. Then park it and go see the incredible wonders of this incredible place. When you get back, the houseboat should be relatively cool and you won't have to run the A/C to enjoy dinner. To find a shady spot in the height of summer, try using the speed boats to search canyons on the north side of the lake. Look for shadows cast by high cliffs that face north. If this is your first time on Lake Powell, there's a lot to learn, even if you're an experienced boater. One of the most important is to make absolute sure you've got your houseboat tied down solid. Terrific storms occasionally blow through and they can turn a peaceful sunset into a screaming nightmare in the dark in as little as two hours. Don't take a chance. Fact is, you'll get a lot more out of your expensive houseboat rental if you have a level-headed individual with you who already has solid experience houseboating on Powell. Here's a few DON'Ts that first timers often violate... Please do not anchor your houseboat less than 100 feet from another houseboat unless it's a genuine (short term) emergency. Don't even THINK about crossing your anchor lines with another boat or you will get an ear full. Don't pull up on someone else's nice quiet beach and let all 4 of your big wet noisy dogs loose to take a dump anywhere they please. Always pick up after your animals. Don't pull up on someone else's nice quiet beach and start blasting your multiple stereos. Do not water ski or operate PWC's in such a way as to repeatedly rock other boats that are anchored or beached. DO NOT EVER break any glass bottles anywhere, not even in a fire pit! Don't trash your campsite! No one gets paid to clean up after you. You brought it -- please take it back out with you. Be EXTREMELY careful when cliff diving or even diving off the houseboat. Cliff diving is highly illegal but of course everyone does it, sometimes with tragic results. (Note that alcohol often turns normal human beings into mindless beasts.) The captain of the houseboat (or the person who signed the rental agreement) is responsible for everything his passengers do. So far I've had 18 glorious summer vacations on Lake Powell at various water levels and all kinds of weather. If you're reasonably cautious, you should have a great time too.

    Nice presentation and planning document and advice. Especially good advice in the cost recovery section. As a houseboater for over 25 years, I've personally not had any problems with everyone's payment, but it's mostly family and really close friends on my trips. The one time I captained a boat for a good friend and his friends (who I did not know), I, as you recommended presented a non-refundable buy-in on the trip, and they appreciated the overpayment refund I sent them. I think you nailed all the considerations for a trip. Since we're mostly family on the trips, I tell everyone they have to contribute to the chores, and I invite them to do what they want. For those who didn't contribute much, I would give them a warning that future invites would depend on their participation - it worked! I think the only thing I could recommend in your planning guide would be to specify the Lake level when recommending a 'campsite' - the Lake is different depending on that level. By the way, I like the rake recommendation - I never thought about that but since you mentioned it, it certainly would have been useful! For 18 of those years, I had shared ownership in two houseboats (Southern Belle and Desert Breeze). The key is finding a houseboat with a great - not good, great - management and maintenance program. My ROI on both of them was less than 4 years as compared to a nearly comparable - the amenities are far better on a shared ownership boat - annual rental boat . Plus, everyone is an owner so they all tend to take care of the boat better than do the renters! (As I live in Florida the trip would be too costly for any trips of less duration than 7 days.)

    Why do house boats have a limit of people that can be on the boat at all times? Are they strict about that?

    • @JessePlautz
      @JessePlautz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The number of life jackets needs to equal the number of people on the boat. I think as long as you bring extra life jackets you will not have a problem, but I would confirm that with the coast guard. Also, the rental agency lists the rentals by the number of people the hosts can sleep. But if your camping on the beach, who cares. Lastly it’s probably to prevent party boats.

    The last houseboat trip I took, at a different lake, we used a “post pounder” to pound in stakes that we tied to. I’ve heard many people talk about how hard it is to dig the massive holes necessary for tie offs. Would it work, or has anyone used one of the gas powered one man post hole diggers? They are pretty compact snd seem like they would make it a heck of a lot easier.

      I've always done Wahweap. Never done Bullfrog but would like to. What I do know: There's no services near the marina like there are in Page (i.e. walmart). So you better be sure you brought everything!

      Antelope is cheaper, better provided, if you can afford to they will stock your boat, giving you a full extra day, also you are supporting the Navajo people

      The other tumbler literally was just about just as good, and who knows if they even started with the same amount of ice. But one is twice as much as the other. Yeti are good but you're also paying for the name. Even Ozark Mountain is practically as good as Yeti.

    This test is not scientific but lots of fun! To do it correctly, you'd have to take the same amount of water by ounces, freeze it in one solid form, that of he cups preferably, and then at the exact same time, place them in the exact same area spaced at least three times the size of the vessels (cups) apart. To measure the results, you would place a thermometer in at fifteen minute intervals, and record whose ice completely melted first time wise, then how much longer it lasted in the other. You're welcome.
