    You might compare the prices of this device to the Macbook Pro but the Macbook is ONLY a laptop, you don't get the choice of using it as a tablet, you don't get any touch features, you can't write on it or draw. The Surface book can do everything and I suspect do it all pretty well.
    If you're a digital artist, you can draw and sculpt using the pen. If you like to make notes then you can hand write them in OneNote. If you want to do some 3D modelling it'll run 3DS Max, Maya, Blender, ZBrush. You can game on it. You can pop the screen off and do some casual browsing on the net or social media. It does it all. To do the same on Apple products you'd need an iPad Pro plus a Macbook and then you're carrying around two devices everywhere, plus a shedload of cables and adapters.

    Just to clarify, you CAN charge with USB C, as long as the power brick is big enough. MacBook Pro USB Charger works perfectly with it.

      Hussein Barakat - You are correct:
      "Users can also recharge the Surface Book 2 with a USB Type-C charger as long as it is powerful enough.
      You'll need to get a PD or 'Power Delivery' compliant USB-C charger. Make sure you get a quality one and that it's certified. Read the safety manual!
      Devices can be charged from the Surface Book 2, such as a phone using USB Type-C."

    A 1050 in this 13" form factor is kind of nutty. I wish others did the concept of separating the CPU and GPU cooling into screen and keyboard halves, allowing a much higher TDP GPU than usual 13"ers.

      He has it next to the XPS15 in a few shots and you can see it's not actually that different with regards to size. Yes, it's not as wide (a few cm narrower) but depth is the same, height is about the same. And that runs the same 1050 and a full 45W quadcore.

    I like the Magsafe-style charger. Many times, I've inadvertently snagged something on my Surface Book lead, and that has saved my expensive laptop's life. I found the same thing on my old Macbook Pro. I think Apple were foolish to drop what was a great charging solution.

    As someone who needs a laptop to draw and handwrite on for a living and as a hobby, this is my dream computer. But for someone that just needs a computer for typing and using the trackpad, it's hard to justify the price.
    Still, this seems like the perfect computer for me but not for the average laptop user.

      Surface Pro has a smaller screen and the type cover just makes the whole thing.... flimsy. If all you want to do is draw, then sure, but if you also want it to act as a laptop... no go.

    • @Imran-bw7tn
      @Imran-bw7tn 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BROis the type cover is fairly stable. Yes, it’s not as good as laptops, but it’s good enough and it doesn’t cost exorbitant amounts.

      Parker, just went through this with my wife and after trying many machines, she settled on the Lenovo Yoga 920. Although she thought she'd never use it, she actually uses it a LOT in tablet mode with the pen. We returned the Surface Book 2 in lieu of the 920. Lighter weight, less reflective screen, usable tablet mode (Surface Book 2 IS NOT), and so on.

      Pürgatöry Priest OnePlus's Dash charger?

    • @PurgatoryPriest
      @PurgatoryPriest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kushal Rajbhandari - I'm not sure how that stacks up against PD chargers. Simply put, it may not output the required higher power to charge timely and efficiently (heat, battery conditioning, etc). See more below
      OK, I'll try and make this a quick read, do read it all for a better understanding. ☺
      *takes breath;
      Compared to other USB Type-C chargers/tech,
      "Qualcomm's Quick Charge technology which relies on delivering a higher voltage to the battery to expedite charging time."
      Note:
      "Quick Charge 4.0 is fully compliant with the USB-C Power Delivery (PD) spec."
      So, a charge that's fully compliant with the USB-C Power Delivery (PD) specifications should be used to charge a Surface Book 2, I wouldn't use anything else not certified or compliant!
      From ZDNet:
      "The USB Type-C port also supports power delivery. Depending on the Surface Book base, the USB Type-C port can draw either 39W or 95W, the same as the Surface Connect power supply.
      The catch is you must use a USB Type-C charger with an actual Type-C port that supports the Power Delivery 2.0 or 3.0 standard. (The 87W MacBook Pro charger should work just fine.)"
      In any case, you'll most likely not be able to output enough power for the higher charging requirements the Surface Book 2 needs, or even the MacBook. It'll charge, but oh so slowly. I'd be cautious in any case as Dash Charge is a super proprietary technology by OPPO and not yet licensed to other vendors. So, not much is known of its overall tech and what OPPO may have done/tweaked/designed out-of-bounds(?) to make sure it works perfectly with devices Certified for Dash Charge charging technology compared to devices not certified (hence disclaimers in warranties!).
      Things to consider, you are charging what is essentially an explosive material, factors such as heat, over charging (extremely high amperage) with no safety guards/automatic shutoff (like what you may get from cheap, shoddy/older chargers, etc).
      There's a lot going on other than simply plugging in or wirelessly charging a device. Hence it's recommended to use the manufacturer's certified charger(s) for their given devices or one's that are certified by a recognised compliance lab or the manufacturer themselves. Unfortunately, not even their stuff is perfect, but you can be sure the big players take getting sued seriously. ;) So they make sure to dot the i's and cross the t's more often than not!

      hey.. just wanted to know if it can support an external gpu through the type-c port?
      I know it requires a thunderbolt type-c but since it can be charged without a thunderbolt one I hope it can support an external gpu too?

    • @PurgatoryPriest
      @PurgatoryPriest 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Prayash Shrestha - The requirements for an external GPU on USB-C needs to be Thunderbolt 3 compliant. So no, unfortunately the Surface Book 2 does not support eGPU option.

    1. The screen wabble is much less than the previous model. Now the hinge is stiff enough to hold the screen while using stylus or touching screen. I saw many other videos give positive feedback on the hinge improvement and I feel the same on my Surface Book 2.
    2. I don't know why you said "why can't we charge it through the usb type-c port". Did you ever try? You can actually charge it through that port and many people do like the magnetic connection.
    These are the things that I think are misleading.

      Thought about it a lot recently. But then is sleek looks really worth it for the long term? I'm not one to buy into planned obsolescence, but this is a good piece however, potential maintenance is a nightmare, like apple products, you'll have to send it to a specialist mostly. I think out of pocket service fees can reach up to 600 dollars. If you get the amazon 1,099 then, that's almost half the initial cost to buy.
      I think everyone needs to stop and take a look at the darker side of the 'sleekness' factor. This is
      insane designing that requires the same expert settings that put them together, to take them apart for maintenance.

    You need to do some serious research before posting a review.
    1) "Also, why can't they charge it through the USB-C port?" - Sorry man. Yes you can charge it as long as the cable supports the Power Delivery 2.0 or 3.0 standard and the supply is at a high enough wattage
    2) "There are no fans on the bottom" - There is a fan on the bottom of the 13 inch i7 model. The i5 model is fan-less
    Just...facepalm

    useful video, it would have helped to have some benchmarks vis a vis your daily XPS 15. that is for smoothness of premiere editing and speed of rendering. Also, something I think worth mentioning is that compared say to XPS15, this surface books are unserviceable by the user, they are basically sealed up, and everything being soldered on, it means basically you throw it away if it fails..and hence, an extensive warranty is a must.

    you nailed it :) all the spots. usb-c should have been used in fact x2 usb-c one for external gpu and one for charging, they should have removed the previous charger port. you are totally correct about the tablet mode operations, i think edge might be a better option for web browsing in tablet mode, but most of the icons and navigating the ui is very tiny in tablet mode and also cumbersome. i noticed loud fan noise in other videos during gaming and that became a real turning point as basic operations could start the fans and be annoying, chrome might do this if lots of tabs opened

    Wacom, Apple and Microsoft make the best drawing tablet, and its amazing to have such a tablet in a very powerful labtop.
    And its at the same price as the highest dell, or the razer latop for the 3000$ model, but all of the others dont habe a drawing tablet in it, yet to say such a huge batter.
    A bit price, but Im looking for a long lasting machine that is powerful and can do drawing as well. ❤️❤️👌

      closets products to this, will be Lenovo Yoga 720, it has a 45watt CPU 7700HQ, and the 1050. and is Wacom. so on paper is quite more powerful. of course, nothing is as nice as this screen, and the yoga does not detach.

    Do you think the base model is fine for me? I’m a college student and plan on using it to take notes and do some coding on the go. I don’t like the surface pro because it’s awkward to use on the lap. And I won’t be gaming on it because I already have a desktop pc that I game on.

    Great review. I'd like to add my experience with the Surface Book and why I won't be getting the 2. I was an early adopter of the 1st Gen Surface Book and for the first six months, I had to have the unit replaced and reinstalled the OS from scratch 3 times, but MS worked out the bugs and it then worked as advertised. I was trying to go all in on the MS ecosystem, had a Windows phone, fitness band, and the Surface Book that I thought would take the place of my iPad. The truth is that to use it as a tablet, it is a three step process to separate it, power it up, and get to where you want to be which was cumbersome on a train where as an iPad is take it out and turn it on…done. Not to mention that while there has been progress, there is still a substantial app gap for Windows. So, I was then carrying two devices again. MS then stopped making Windows Phones and the Band so I was back on an iPhone and Apple Watch. When the Surface Book 2 was announced I was tempted by the faster processor but in reality, I wouldn’t use it as a tablet and wouldn’t game on it (have an Alienware desktop for that), so I decided to take the plunge and go all in on a Macbook Pro. Reasons being that it will work with all of my devices, has outstanding build quality and technical support, and while not the latest and greatest specs, it works.

    i have the 15 in. I love it. my only complaint other than the cost is the size in tablet mode, it's HUGE. I would recommend the 13.5 for tablet. But, I wanted the 1060, so i have a monster tablet.

      Craig Chandler Hi, can you tell me what the fans sound like please as I'm looking at the 15",are they loud or a quite woosh etc,appreciate if you could tell me please,also do you have any screen bleeding and coil wine one reviewer mention

    • @CWChandler1968
      @CWChandler1968 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ken,
      I have been happy with mine so far. The fans are quiet, but I am not a gamer. Maybe a little coil whine, but to hear it I need to put my ear up to the screen. In normal use I don't hear it. I have had it less than a week and I have spent much of that time installing software and transferring files. I have not had time to stress it or really test it. But for me so far I am happy with my purchase. Screen is beautiful. The bezels are a lot wider than the XPS 15 for example, but the part of the screen that is used for the image is perfect.

      Craig Chandler THANK YOU,I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU GETTING BACK TO ME,IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE AND HELPS. ME DECIDE I heard the video camera is one of the best,so i definetly don't mind it not having supper skinny bezels like the XPS and an AWEFUL chin cam,if you need to put your ear up to the screen to hear the coil wine that fine by me,and I'm not a real gamer,just like minecraft and simple platform games, just like the idea of the 15" screen the new 8 gen chip and the 6Gb of 1060 and the QUAD CORE INSTEAD OG DUAL CORE THAT ALWAYS WORRIED ME ,IVE.I'VE BEEN WAITING 1-11/2 for this to come out,it's everything the surface book 1 was lacking for methey aren't available in New Zealand yet,CAN YOU TELL ME WHICH SIZE DID YOU GET IF YOU DONT MIND,THE 256. OR 512 SSD,I DONT THINK ID EVER NEED THE 1TB and its way way dearer,tossing up with the 256 and 512,ANYWAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP,KEN

    I have a surface pro 5 for 5 years and I've been planning to buy a surface book 3 or 2, I found one that is only around $500 - $600 in price which is affordable (this price includes GTX 1050 and stylus pen), should I buy it? I mean I want to buy to replace my overwhelmingly slow surface pro 5 (4gb ram, intel core i5, no gpu)
