Golgulsa Temple is a temple located on Hamwolsan Mountain in Gyeongju-si, and is the headquarters of Seonmudo Island (禪武-do) and is nicknamed Shaolin Temple in Korea. About 1,500 years ago, Gwangyu Zen people from India settled on Hamwolsan Mountain in Gyeongju and founded Golgulsa Temple and Girimsa Temple, which is the oldest Seokgulsa temple in Korea, which was built in the form of a Seokgulsa temple after India by Gwangyu's group.
In the Golgulam at the foot of Hamwolsan Mountain, there are 12 stone caves in a huge tuff rock tens of meters high, and at the top of the rock wall, there is a statue of Maae Buddha carved with a standing stone. The front of the cave looks like a house with walls made and tiles on it, but when you enter, the ceiling and the wall are all made of stone. He dug a persimmon on the northern wall and served the Buddha, but there is no way to know his facial expression due to severe abrasion. Beopdanggul Cave and other oysters vary in size from one person to a large one that can sit three or four people, and various types of Buddha statues are enshrined, ranging from cute Dongjabyeong to dignified Northnim. The path leading to the cave and the cave is connected by steep stairs dug in the rock, and to climb to the rock-carved rock Buddha, you have to pass through a natural cave. In the painting "Golgul Seokgurdo" by Jeongseon, a painter of the Joseon Dynasty, both the Rock-carved Buddha statue and the 12 stone cave are painted in wooden waga, but all the front rooms are now lost and only the rock cave remains. The 4-meter-high and 2.2-meter-wide statue carved on the top of the cliff is designated as a treasure. It was carved on granite mixed with a lot of sand, so the preservation condition was not very good and the damage was severe due to long weathering, so a glass roof was covered.
Golgulsa Temple opens Seonmudo Training Center, a traditional practice of Buddhism, and conducts temple stays. Many foreigners are also participating in the one-day temple stay, which consists of Seonmudo Island and temple experience programs, an experiential temple stay for trekking and meditating on Hamwolsan Mountain, and Seonmudo Youth Hwarang Training, a long-term resting temple stay and youth personality education program. In addition, a performance group (King Sacheon) has been established in terms of social contribution and cultural welfare to perform permanent performances in the Golgulsa Temple grounds.
