  • In this episode I am jumping on my friends boat Kevin In Monterey Bay California. We are in search of live bait (squid, herring, anchovies, mackerel, or smelt). Plan is get that live bait and drop it down for halibut fishing along several beaches in Monterey Bay. Its been a two year mission to get underwater camera footage of halibut in there natural habitat. The challenge is being in water clear enough to do so. Luckily on this day it happened and I got some amazing footage I am excited to share with all of you. I hope you enjoy.

    Great underwater footage. Pretty interesting to see the amount of fish near or around your bait. I like how you edit your videos with the arrows. Really eliminates where I need to focus on when looking for the action or something else I should be paying attention to.

    I always watch underwater footage of halibut in Alaska it’s crazy how easy they spit the hook out there! But even better to watch local underwater footage! Thanks for the videos crispy fish!

    Love the underwater halibut footage so cool to see how they react. You got to do this again I was hoping to see the halibut grabbing the bait and just laying back down on the bottom as they typically do but hopefully next time.

    I think it's great that you risk your camera gear just to show us what is going on so thank you much. My personal problem is I'm color blind and can't make a lot out of what is going on but I try. It really helped me with crabbing and Ling Cod fishing. If I understand what they are doing then I can adjust for them!

    Run a squid jig if there are squid. Squid usually looks like long vertical if it’s grouped or balls it’s typically a fin fish bait. Squid is THICK out of moss landing. Still bummed I didn’t win the trip. Maybe someday we will fish your boat or mine. I do moss mostly but will chase a good bite from bodega to monterey. Tight lines be safe.

    Is it possibly a Pacific vs California Halibut? How do you identify?

    • @500dollarjapanesetoaster8
      @500dollarjapanesetoaster8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you catch a very large one (over 30 lbs), it's mostly likely Pacific halibut. Pacific ones have a more diamond shape to the whole outline, whereas the CA ones are more of a rounded look. Pacific also have a straighter lateral line coming down the top of the body. The tail of Pacifics has more of an indented tailfin.

    • @ChrisPfish2
      @ChrisPfish2  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We dont have many pacific in our area, the ones caught seem to be in the deeper water 100ft+ by accident when people go for rockfish. Never hear of anyone targeting them. For ID, its pretty easy to tell if your familiar with one of the species. Look at some picture on google. CA is more round vs Pacific more diamond shape. Thanks for watching

    Would you eat squid eggs? have you ever tried them? Do you think of squid eggs like chicken or caviar? Personally I believe that squid eggs taste like ink and ink has a very distinct stink to it and so do squid. I would not even consider trying them. Please feel free.

    • @ChrisPfish2
      @ChrisPfish2  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      when I said nothing eats them I was referring to the animals in the ocean. When I did a google search about human consumption it said they are very good.
