  • In today episode I am going to show you how to weave Namibian baskets. Basket weaving is a traditional technique used for decades among different tribes in Namibia for domestic use, specifically popular among Aawambo, Kavango and Caprivian people.
Different patterns are used to create beautiful artwork of the baskets meant for different household use, such as serving of meals etc.
Baskets are made in different designs(dye) and sizes. You can learn how to weave and keep your masterpiece.

Thankyou for this! I found another lady who showed the weaving process with rope and coloured thread, but it's so interesting seeing how it is made with the natural resources in your environment. These are beautiful!

Hello friend. You asked what the words are in English. I think you took 'epidermis' from the tree roots. The outer layer of the roots. Tree bark, the skin, and the epidermis of the roots contain 'tannin', tannins are bitter and dark colored. You used a pounder bowl, called a 'mortar', and your pounder stick is a 'pestle'. You ground the tree epidermis with charcoal to make a powder. Then you made a 'decoction', by boiling the tree and charcoal powder to extract the tanins. You used the charcoal because it is acidic, and it helps to break down the root epidermis of the tree, releasing the tannins. Which creates your beautiful dye. Thank you so much for your wonderful video. It is beautiful to see how you live, and to be able to learn your cultural basket weaving. Not all young people are interested in the old traditional ways. But some of us are. I am not young anymore, but I love to learn the old ways. I always have. I try to teach the young people I meet when they are interested. Thankbyou again beautiful Lady, for your video, and for explaining as best you can. Your voice is lovely and your English is wonderful. I understand how difficult it is to learn language in school, and not know how to express things in the correct terms well. I do hope you will see my comment, and that it helps you as you have helped me. I wish you and your community health and prosperity.

This is the coolest process I’ve ever seen! I loved seeing how you get your leaves off the plant and even how you gathered different materials to change the color. I’m in America, and most things are just at the store, but this was way cooler. Wow, I’m amazed! Your process is beautiful!!

Since you asked for comments, here's some. You can say dried leaf, root etc instead of 'thing'. But i understand the linguistic difficulty, especially when translating a thought into words. Cheers from india😊
