  • What is the true cost of a home gym? Should everyone build a home or garage gym? What are the pros and cons of having your own gym vs a commercial gym?
In this video we'll do a cost breakdown of my gym equipment, talks about the positives and negatives that come with a home gym, and do a quick gym build of all new items to see if purchasing new or finding deals can work for you.
There's a lot of reasons to build your own gym, convenience, save time, and the list goes on but I hear a lot of people tauting home gyms and I'm not sure it's for everybody in every situation which is what I attempt to address here.

Home gym, mine cost me 175 bucks total.
All it is is a bar, some weights, adjustable bench, adjustable bench rack, that's it.
I can do all main exercises with just this, put the seat upright for shoulder press, incline, decline, flat benchpress, squat?? just move the bench bro, deadlifts, I put some folded up cardboard layering on the floor and put the weight down on that, so I don't break the tiles.
      That's it.

Great points and video. Commercial gyms also charge annual maintenance fees and don’t forget about the gas! Another consideration is clothes. Some people feel the need to wear “respectable” clothing at the gym. These are all points I justify to myself to purchase more stuff for my home gym.

I am about 15k to 18k in on my home gym. I cancelled my gym membership about one year ago. It's the best thing ever. True, there's no eye candy or the social aspect but the consistency and the progress that I've made in the last 13 months it's truly amazing! Plus I don't wait for anyting, I can curl in the squat rack, and while working out naked I haven't tried that yet sounds kind of interesting🤔. Thanks for the TH-cam content! Enjoying your Channel

Update6 months and I'm still loving this bench. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxo_64lVTGMk7y4aXTPxPOcQ3YTLyQ6kYV I use it almost daily. I've gotten used to the small wobble and it's no problem at all. Love the storage, it folds right next to my weight set in the garage and hardly takes any space. I wish the covering material was a little bit tougher. I have a feeling that in a couple years it'll tear, but the bench is very well priced that I would just buy a new one.3 month usage review. Awesome bench for someone looking for compactness and storage. I did have to drill a couple holes to adjust my preferred seating position and leg bar position but that's only due to my personal preference. It's very sturdy for normal workouts, but for anyone going above 100# dumbbell press it wobbles ever so slightly. I would probably go with a fixed bench if that's the case. That being said i can accomplish 99% of my normal gym workout with this setup. Very happy with the purchase.

Great breakdown and analysis! Bottom line, it comes down to the person and honest needs of equipment. I will NEVER recoup the cost of my home gym compared to what my wife and I were paying for our commercial memberships. With that said, I would make the same decision 100 times again to go with the home gym. One of the best investments I've made. I also didn't go for budget items because I was particular about equipment, BUT, I could still train well with some of the cheaper options had I decided to go that route. For most people, the home gym makes more sense cost-wise using more budget-friendly equipment options. The biggest factor for us in favor of the home gym is the time savings. You cannot replace the convenience of having the equipment in your own home and being able to control the environment whenever you want to use it. We don't have a problem with motivation to use it so it just makes more sense for us. It would be great to hear your wife's thoughts in the next video.

Both home and gyms away from home have their place. As much as I favor home gyms better, not everyone has the resources ($$$) and space to own one. For many, a commercial gym may be more convenient, closer to home or work, and cheaper long run.

This is one of the best, most honest videos I've seen weighing the pros and cons of each. Honestly it will come down to a lot of factors, including whether you like socializing, want to roll out of bed and into the gym at 7, or put up with germs juvenile behavior to boot in a gym. Of course, you're not likely to meet Ms Right in your garage without some help.

Great Video once again. Taking Covid out of the equation, I've bought and sold enough equipment to pay for everything in my gym. Now, my gym isn't the fanciest but that's how I like it. And, as per my channel, I build a lot of gear. I'm actually thinking of building a wood rack and selling my metal one.
And lastly,,,,,, I think your like/dislike of people plays a factor in going commercial or home gym haha.

All I'm saying is I can't lift naked at the public gym. I also can't go to the public gym anymore.
In all seriousness, I live on a military base, the gym is free and they have everything you could ever need. I just have home gym fever because I'm tired of waiting on equipment to free up. I'll go in for leg day, and my squat is my first lift so I can go all out on squats so I'm not too tired later in the workout, and when all the racks are being used, I have no choice but to put squatting off and then I'm too tired to get all my reps or I have to drop weight.

For a while I regretted spending so much and had a hard time getting into the zone training at home. But now I find Im really happy that I can workout without getting annoyed by the under 40 crowd and I can split up my workouts throughout the day however I like. I can do short cardio sessions after each meal or 2 a day training. Things I would never do if I have to drive 40 mins each time to the gym.

Very good video with great detail. I have a complete home gym including commercial Stairmaster. But I always keep a a couple of gym memberships on hand because I get bored training home and a commercial gym is much more motivating for me. One thing mentioned in this video that very few people mention is the importance of air quality. 8 out of 10 people with home gyms do not have an air purifier or air exchanger. The commercial gyms have high ceilings and air circulates much more free. When I built my home gym at home the first thing I did was install an air exchanger and air purifier before installing anything else . And, this is also a high cost of a home gym. As anyone with a home will say, a home gym is a never complete lol

I built my home gym during the Covid crises. Now I like working out at home. I don't miss those days of the commercial gym, waiting to get to stations like bench press, or squat racks. I would commonly see gym users hogging equipment, talking on cell phones at a work out station, hanging their towel and water bottle at a station and walking away to superset somewhere else. Or using the bench press to do one arm sitting bicep curls and talk on the phone. I could go on and on.

Too late, home gym acquired. Slippery slope has started, $15 grand in credit card debt. For real though, I have a cheaper power rack and enough accessories to have no excuses. I get itches for a rack upgrade, but my 14 gauge rack is bolted to the floor and ceiling. The ceiling bracing kind of makes an 11 gauge rack obsolete if you're not squatting 700 pounds. My ceiling isn't high enough for a forever rack purchase either.

I think home gym works best if you're doing Squat, Bench, Deadlift, HIIT, or CrossFit type workouts. If you're looking to do more traditional bodybuilding work and using machines like Hack Squat, Leg Press, Lying Leg Curls etc, I think the cost and space eventually becomes prohibitive for most to outfit in a "garage".

I'm from Spain so I don't have access to good quality affordable equipment, also I don't have a garage so a rack would rust outside. I find that the best way to go about having a home gym is going the calisthenics route and DIY. Have a pull-up bar where I can place rings and that covers about half of the excercises, also I just made a DIY cable system. The downside is I can't bench press or squat but I have ring dips and the leg days are way more interesting now. Not missing the gym at all.

$10 Planet fitness gym membership is very hard to beat. Financially speaking, most people are probably better off with a planet fitness gym membership than owning a home gym. The pros are its open 24/7, huge amount of gym equipment to choose from, takes up no space, not responsible for any repairs (if the machines break), gym atmosphere, have free showers etc. There are only 2 cons I see with commercial gyms is that you must pay a "monthly fee" and you have to "Travel" back and forth from the gym. But in reality most people go to the gym before they start work (which is usually located on there way to their jobs). Hope this helps.

Management spoke to me several times. So I slowly began building my home gym. It was only then when I realized how crappy a lot of the equipment at commercial gyms is! Also, good luck finding a commercial gym with a multi grip bar, axle bar and a reverse hyper.

Home gym for sure. We don't have a good lifting gym in my area anymore so it's either Planet Worthless, or Anytime (you want to hit on a cougar) Fitness. My schedule prior to the lockdown was get up at 3:30 am, go to the gym by 4:00, pray heavily that the limited equipment (one power rack, no benches, one smith machine, and a bunch of cable machines) isn't being hogged, get my workout in, shower and hit the road by 6:30 for an hour and a half trip to work. Then it's work all day, drive home, and get to bed around 9:00 to start all over again.
For the last year and a half, it's get up at 6:30, or earlier depending on schedule, work all day, shut down at 5:00, hit the basement gym, and off the equipment by ~7:00, shower, eat dinner, and have time to do something else. There are three machines which I would like to buy but won't: seated leg curl, seated leg extension, and a leg press. I would also like to replace my old lat pulldown, but what I have works.

As far as cost is concerned personally dont think its all that expensive IF you are realistic with what you do vs how strong you actually are/plan on being.
Example: titan fitness economy barbell vs Rogue ohio power bar $110 vs $300+,700lb rating vs 190,000psi . Lets say you squat/deadlift are under 405 or hell even 315 like literally 95% of the population you don't need a super nice barbell. While obviously superior in everyway the average person looking to get in shape will/can get by with alot less. The only time you need to spend extra is if you are above a certain lvl of strength(very rare% wise anyone lifts more than 500lb on any of the big 3)and need something with a higher weight ratings/ durability. Or 2 you are immersed in the gym culture and appreciate awesome well built equipment( which lets be honest most of us). Thats why i recommend people start off with modestly priced equipment first until either you grow in strength(like make a personal goal like if u DL 405 u can now buy a powerbar) or you get into the culture and decide to step up in quality.
