Oh God he painted over the terrazo floor. It was beautiful it just needed a mop and a wax. That kind of floor can last almost forever.
Old floors often dont have DPMs in them, he looks like he put down a liquid DPM to keep damp underneath and then insulated with roils of thermal foil insulation and put wood or laminate flooring with its own insulation to level it, that would stop heat loss and damp and the only other option is dig up the whole floor and go down a 30 cm lay a DPM and then refill and reconcrete, and then YOU STILL have to put down a new floor to walk on thats a huge job. So its a cost effective way to have a warm and damp free home. I have had the same issues myself in my 110 year old Irish Cottage, beutiful terrarcota floors with alovely design, just not liveable.
I agree the Terraza floor was beautiful, but apparently it was their style. It was not damaged. No paint was put on it. Just a layer of underlayment paper whatever for the wood floor that was not nailed into Terrazzo floor. It could be removed at any time and, exposed the Terrazzo. It was the best kind of adjustment anyone could make.
Clearly, the Terrazzo floor would not go with all her collectables. It clearly would have been way too busy.
My first thought! Covering that beautiful floor!
