Egan's drumming is incredible on this song, truly incredible. This is phenomenal, catchy, anthemic early punk that deserves to be better known. A rare and wonderful gem.
My mum used to work at EMI Records in Southall. Bands on the label used to do factory visits. Rich Kids turned up, seeing their scruffy appearance, mum says 'you don't look very rich to me'. Midge Ure replied, 'och, we're rich in talent love!' Kate Bush also, mum mentioned all the 'funny cigarette burns on her dress'. I was about 12 then, only years later did I realise what they were!
What a real rock n roll band should sound like; no fancy gimmicks or flashy over technical lead guitar work, just playing for the song rather than over it. A great number from an underrated band.
Awesome tune............ I saw the band in 1978 at Tiffany's in Blackheath, West Midlands at 14 yrs old..............great gig, was brilliant to see Matlock and Midge Ure, I understood the importance even at that tender age. Great band, great gig.
"I remember revolver; I was only 14; used to sneak downstairs when my parents were in bed; turn on the tv; this programme was unique at that time; what a brilliant song; didn't realise that was midge ure; RIP peter; deadpan king of cool!"
o my god i actually had tears in my eyes watching this. superb song. never thought i would see this performance again. god bless dlusman youre a fuckin hero
Saw them live in 78 at the Nashville Rooms in London, they were fantastic live !!! Met Midge a few times and he was a real great guy with no pretentions. His tie up with Glen Matlock of the Pistols to form the Rich Kids was a master stroke and yes this band really should have been huge, but they were ignored as it was felt they were selling out! God we were naive in those days! GL
The original mix of this album was also awful. Sounded like it was dunked in mud. Such a great and rocking live band and, songs for days. At least you saw them live. Remember the 1st time you played this lp - I imagine it was a tremendous bummer. Remastered is excellent
Since there's been such a positive response to the two live Rich Kids videos I just posted on google+ thought I might as well share this also. For those new to Rich Kids, it was bassist Glen Matlock's first band after he was kicked out of Sex Pistols in February, 1977. Just one month later he teamed up with guitarist Steve New and drummer Rusty Egan. Midge Ure (ex Slik/ PVC2 guitar, vocals) joined in September and Rich Kids were good to go. Starting in January 1978 the band released three singles, the last of which featured the A-side Ghosts Of Princes In Towers. The song became the title of their first and only album released in late 1978. The LP, however, was not a big success, only peaking at # 51 on the UK charts. But Ghosts Of Princes In Towers is a GREAT song, and this live version smokes the one on the album, with more excitement and emotion. I've never gotten tired of seeing this video---a truly wonderful performance.
Michael Jones thanks Michael. Don't know much about Ure, but it seems he is quite famous. There's always some comments about him somewhere. I have that PVC2 e.p. Put You In the Picture and was just looking for it to play since I haven't heard it in a long time. But shit, I can't find it. I HATE when that happens.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but these were wank. The audience booed them off over 3 hours, the producers kicked out the audience and got a rent-a-crowd of hobo'sin. Whatever Ure and Matlock became after this is irrelevent, that day Rich Kids sucked.
It's great to hear how heavily the guitars actually drove these exceptionally well written and played songs...this album sounded like it was mixed in the bog when it came out - felt like shit for the band.
Fucking made me cry ! Peter Cook, all the kidz smiling and dancing, fantastic song, amazing mix(for tv,or anywhere for that matter),real raw talent and good energy...the way it should be !!
Great Band! All Great musicians! Midge still touring (saw him live this week), Glen still touring solo and with Blondie (saw him in 2022 with Blondie) Rusty is still djing I think ,RIP Stella Nova (Steve New) ! dx
Came across this song on the Rhino "Teenage Kicks" comp from 1993 and absolutely LOVE IT. Rhino Records always made the best comps to discover new bands that perhaps I had heard of, but hadn't actually heard. I had forgotten that this was Glenn Matlock's band after The Pistols. It's so good. That climbing chord progression really gives the song an edge over others of the period.
that is how I discovered this song!! .....such an unbelievable compilation and the "Come Out And Play" one is fantastic too....found out about so many bands.
@@DaveAnchovies bollocks, Matlock's bass lines ruined those songs IMO,I give him major credit for basically writing a lot of the music/teaching them, but his bass playing didn't fit when he would do bass runs allover the show, worst was his backing vocals at that time. Steve did a perfect job doing bass on the album
For some strange reason, TH-cam doesn't have much on the real Rich Kids(pay no attention to that other malarkey under the same name). this is one of the Top 10 most underrated bands in history, in my opinion. Their hearts were originally in the right place in my opinion. If anybody has more stuff, please post it.
Happy days! I got very much into the Rich Kids - & Eddie & the Hotrods, too - because of Revolver. Both bands were IMO weakly mixed on disc compared to their live showing on said programme. I caught the show, every week, by putting the tape recorder up to the telly with the mic leading up to the volume outlet; anyone else remember those days?
This slot was apparently supposed to be the debut of PiL. Literally their first appearance anywhere. However they cancelled at the last minute and went for a pissup in camber sands instead (as you do). So matlocks band was brought in at the last minute.
What awesome footage. Looking forward to seeing them at the Islington Academy tonight. They might look a little older now But I'm sure the songs will sound as great... Here's to a great night Rock on Rich Kids
This song came in my head at work today, so I just had to hear it when I got home. Brilliant live version this one! Listening to this song, I feel as though it was influenced by The New York Dolls a la Johnny Thunders. Does anyone else pick that up?
Yes, saw them myself at Northampton, great live band and on eof the brilliant songs of the day. Top stuff, big noise with a melody what a combination! Moses Presley
New Wave King Midge Ure when he was still a Punk rocker!! By hearing this I thought hmmm Father=Rich Kids and children are=grunge rock bands from the 90s
it's interesting the use of the word "fabricated" as the sex pistols themselves were a manufactured band. Midge was actually approached by Malcom Mclaren to join the Pistols before he had Johnny Rotten on board..... he didn't even bother to ask if he could play an instrument. As for bandwagon, his other bands,(visage, Ultravox)were actually revolutionary and before their time, inspiring generations of musicians to come.... the guy's a true legend!
Is that true? I've often thought of an alternate timeline where Midge was in the Pistols, but I'd imagined Malcolm would have known him from Slik. That's the alternate timeline where The Ramones debut was a huge smash and instead of the countercultural movement it was punk was just another phase of glitter. That version of the Pistols could have lasted as long as Status Quo, except Matlock didn't get along with Ure any better than with Lydon so it would probably also be doomed.
Please could anyone indicate me if there's any mp3 version of this stunning live recording somewhere? I love Rich Kids but I'm not really in love with the LP's version... here "Ghosts" really blows away the fuckin' world... another amazing yet criminally underrated band from the Seventies.

110 % AGREE !

One of the greatest songs ever written!
Phenomenal lyrics and music. What a tune and band
Super 👌 song 😊😊😊
An absolute classic, I was lucky enough to see them in 1978.
Me too. Tiffanys Leicester.

Seen Glen Matlock and his band last week and they played this track highlight of the night

A tour de force, I never tire of hearing it. Fantastic band, R.I.P. Steve New

I was around the scene at the time and at that time no-one took this band seriously but this was one great record .
I was 11 stuck in new york listening to shitty kiss
Mick Ronson produced as I recall.

bloddy fantastic - first band I ever saw - as a 16 year old this was pretty special - great memories
I've just turned 60 and Midge shares my birthday. Heard this band on the Peel show, that bloke knew his stuff. Thanks so much for posting this.

If you listen to the Pistols demos with Chris Spedding, it's raw but the bass lines are nuts. That should have been the first lp.

Midge-san is so cute and full of enthusiasm and youth! High musicality! ❤️❤️❤️
Underrated punk band. The Rich Kids imploded way too quickly. Great performance here.
Great tunes Matlock is one my faves, cuz he writes the tunes but is a team player. The band comes first.Love this for posting it ip.❤❤❤❤❤

so glad i saw them as the original line up in London on Jan 2010 shortly before the world lost steve. got the priceless t shirt

Just brilliant
Wow, this brings back some memories. I used to love watching 'Revolver' when I was a young 'un!
I saw the original broadcast when I was 12 - I was dumbfounded, the greatest thing I had ever seen. I wanted a Les Paul!
they played the knickers club in keighley on 17th january 78(the day the pistols split up)
Great times
brilliant song.
Just listen to that bass line!
In the world of Punk, Glen was virtuoso with his very fluid bass lines.
he plays with the Pistols on the Chris Spedding demos. they really should have released that. his bass playing is absent on bollocks
Couldn't have put it better myself mate. I saw em in Jan 78 when I was 14, totally awesome.

gooooooooooo Midge!!!!!!
allways liked this ace.
Midge Ure before he was dancing with tears in his eyes
Classic !!!! Great guitar work and drumming from ex Skids drummer Rusty Egan.
The original lp mix completely destroyed these amazing guitars and Rusty's drums with a horrendously neutered and muddy mix.
They got screwed
one band I wished I had seen at the time but they evaded me such an underrated band should of been massive.
