MK2 Coil Gun - 10-Stage, 720 Rounds per Minute - Fully Automatic

  • Mk2 coil Gun:
    10 Optically Triggered Stages,
    Runs off any DC Voltage Between 12-45V (tested) / Upto 200V (untested).
    Fully Automatic Reloading system capable of delivering more than 720 Rounds per minute (12 rounds per second) to the 1st Stage.
    The first stage has the longest "on time" (highest duty cycle) of all the coils, therefore the 1st stage suffers a little after a good 10 seconds of continuous Automatic operation.
    By this point the gun would have fired over 120 Rounds and would need refilling anyway.
    This project was more about high speed reloading than high power but it's still a large improvement in both power output and efficiency over the 6-Stage MK1.
    Thanks For Watching!

    "It costs 36 dollars to fire this weapon...for twelve seconds."

    • @RogueElectron
      @RogueElectron  10 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      It should be around 4.87 USD for 12 seconds.
      720 rounds per minute / 60 seconds in a minute = 12 rounds per second x 12 seconds = 144 coins x 2p each = £2.88 x 1.69 (GBP to USD exchange rate) = $4.87 Total.
      The gun would probably overheat if i done $36 worth in one go ;-)

    With "Pulse-Rated" Capacitors and an Incredible power supply in the 20kW Region you may be able to make a pretty good capacitor driven coil gun with similar RPM. I would still think the capacitors would heat up over time... Not before the enamel melts off the windings though!

    Whenever I think NASA has been weak in it's development, or PC's haven't come far enough, or video games have plateaued disappointingly; I come to coilgun/railgun videos. Ten plus years of them and they're still low powered underperforming novelties that are so poorly made and so not fit for purpose they're a hoot!

    • @RogueElectron
      @RogueElectron  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's only for fun and given the weight of the projectile, there is a fair amount of kinetic energy there. Railguns are more powerful than gunpowder now aren't they? they just require a warehouse of capacitors and power supply lol

    • @RogueElectron

    Could I make a question? The coins seem unstable in flight. Do you have tried to make them spinning (with a friction on one side for example)?

    • @RogueElectron
      @RogueElectron  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Yes they are unstable. Friction on one side could have helped but would also result in the coin leaving the barrell slower.

    • @jangruber42
      @jangruber42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting question and idea! But I don't know about the Magnus effect at this size. Giving the coins a spin could cause them to deflect either up or down, depending on the direction of the spin, during the flight. If I had a coil gun like this, I would definitely try the spin idea to see how it turns out!

    Really nice work! The freewheeling diode configuration increases the time during which the magnetic field collapses substantially though. From my experience, I suppose you could increase your muzzle velocity if using a full-bridge for each coil (or two FETs and two diodes).

    • @RogueElectron
      @RogueElectron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A full bridge.. I'd never considered this before. What would you have the full bridge do?

    • @tomtechtod9200
      @tomtechtod9200 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of what follows you already know probably. You have big inductors, probably a few hundred of uHs? That means it takes time for them to go up to peak current. The magnetic field corresponds directly to the current through the coil. With a freewheeling diode it takes about the same time to discharge as it took to charge the coil. That limits the mean maxium force you can apply to the projectile. A n-channel MOSFET full-bridge will use two opposite high side / low side MOSFETs to turn the current ON and when you turn off the coil will discharge through the body diodes of the other two MOSFETs into the battery (two of these FETs are disabled by shorting gate to source) The coil discharge time will be much lower, so the current can stay higher for a longer time. Dificult to explain in writing. Don't take my word for it you can easily simulate this in Multisim or Pspice etc. Good luck .

      @RogueElectron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get what you are saying, would be interesting to give a go. Rogue Electron i can imagine an invention that would go perfect with a gun like this a electromagnetic pulse motor that is in a backpack like a flamethrower will charge the rifle non stop, since the electricity would be the new gun powder as long as you have a lot of projectiles you will never run out of juice. Check out my over unity series you might like it.... Thank you. All of the Coils/ Stages Are in parallel With a FET for each coil.
      The control boards are mounted to the side/ underside of the gun for cosmetic reasons. The Schematic for the MK1 is actually the same as the MK2: www.hvdischarge.co.uk/gallery/MK2-Coin-Gun/Optical%20Coil%20Gun%20Gate%20Trigger.jpeg.
      All that's changed is the power rating of the coils, some optimisation of sensors and a build in debugging tool. Which is on a private video and can be seen here: MK2 Coin Gun - Status Indicator/ Debugging Tool

    • @RogueElectron
      @RogueElectron  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** It costs a lot more than $7.20 per minute! It's firing 2 pence coins. 720 x 2p = £14.40 per minute, which is $21.78 per minute! "using GBP to USD exchange rate on google"If you was to then pick them up and re use them, it would cost nothing ;-)I think 2p a shot is rather cheap. The next gun will be using custom made ammo and is likely to cost around 20p or more per shot!

    • @mewantbrains
      @mewantbrains 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why don't you design the next one to fire nails or ball bearings it will be a lot cheaper
      And to make it portable you could disassemble laptop batteries and use the Li-ion cells to make a 56V battery much lighter and smaller then car batteries then you can shoot rats with it lol

    • @mewantbrains

    • @mewantbrains
      @mewantbrains 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol I recommend you be very careful with how many amps you pull from them also add a temperature sensor in the battery housing and don't drop them as overloading and dropping and overheating and overcharging are the main causes of explosive Li-Po battery failure
      Li-ion and LiFePO4 generally don't explode or catch fire when overloaded dropped overheated or overcharged they just internally short out heat up and die rarely they will catch fire but I have never had one explode either way be careful with Li-Po batteries

      @jasonshi267 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can u please explain the configuration of the optical triggers

    • @RogueElectron
      @RogueElectron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The optical trigger is just an IR LED and IR Photo-diode pointing towards each other. The LED is constantly powered and when an object interrupts the beam the voltage across the Photo-diode changes. This change in voltage is detected by an op-amp used as a comparator and the output is then turned on.
      Once the projectile has passed the optical trigger, the output turns back off allowing the projectile to pass.

    Hey another thought about APPLICATIONS! What about using coil or rail gun technology to launch PEOPLE into the sky? The rate of acceleration could actually be controlled unlike shooting someone out of a cannon kind of thing...so these guys that fly with their wing suits? You could have a business all day long one flyer launched every 30 seconds for $30...do the math on THAT money! Also how about launching rental glider planes one every minute all day long? Can you picture this long line of gliders flying single file on one hour scenic flights? the gliders could be controlled via remote control and yet allow the renting "pilots" to make limited deviations to experience actually flying a plane with no formal training! HOW MUCH would people PAY?? My guess? a couple hundred MINIMUM....a rental company could have the planes built in china or somewhere and get the costs down to obscenely cheap per plane...could have a huge fleet of things! No engines so maintenance is just cable and pivot point lubrication...keep the batteries charged...might have to keep powered emergency rescue planes in the air at all times that are engineered somehow to dock with glider whose electronics failed and either effect emergency repairs IN FLIGHT or else remove the renter and somehow safely down the damaged bird ...or else not and just let everyone take their chances and sign their waivers...hell have like the ultralights where the whole plane can parachute down? Maybe jettison the wings via release levers first...of course every glider would be in radio contact ...I WANT TO GO RENT ONE RIGHT NOW!!

    Tilting will also decrease in-barrel friction and you can use a screw-on pipe capped at the other end with a spring inside to push the stack of coins in the feeder, similar to the vertical one in the video (gravity feeder)... Or you can use an airsoft aeg and just adapt the multistage on the aluminium inner barrel, using 6 mm steel BB (bearings balls)! (OoO)

    Your problem lays not in electronic components taking to much juice, but
    rather in the design of coils themselfs. Passing the current directly
    is sort of bruteforce and could be bypassed if You are further
    interested in what i have in mind drop me a line at my email. my google
    account is:
    gustarballs1983
    the domain i think is obvious but i won't post it here so i don't get
    flodded with spam..
    You'll need to use what i developed and call a magnetic field augmenter
    (or magnetic field amplifier). It's designed in such a way that magnetic
    field augment it's only suitable for coilgun application as it gives a
    huge spike and then it quickly goes down to 0.. the only limitation on
    the current in my design of the coils is the isolation on the wire the
    coil is made of, or that the wire might melt beecause it's too thin in
    compare to amount of current passing through it. electronics however
    would be totaly unharmed in this design as it would only show the way
    for the huge current to go, and it would not pass through the electronic
    components. basically it's sort of like how energo-electronics works
    in industrial power stations, it controls evrything however is not in
    contact with the main current flow because it would hilariously fail..
    Eighter way I'm waiting if You are interested in fair exchange of ideas
    and brainstorming

    • @RogueElectron
      @RogueElectron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      fla playa By taking the maximum voltage of the caps and the max current discharge rating and multiplying them. 1.6Mw is conservative as i think the actual figure is around 2Mw :-D (peak).
