Somewhere around 40 minutes in, they discuss Tyson and how he was viewed as "animalistic" by the media because he used big words out of context and bit an opponent. I half agree with Jimmy about him being the only fighter to bite a piece of his opponent's body off. But at the same time, it didn't matter whether he did it or not. Because everyone already has their mind decided about who you are.
I went through it for years working in the corporate world. People see me show up and not give a f about the job. They see me do EXACTLY 8 hours and punch out. I get labeled as "unprofessional", "lazy", "im just here for a check". I don't understand how "he's just here for a check" is an insult though. EVERYONE is "just here for a check".
But no one ever sees the number of years I spent with a suit and a tie, and doing the whole "good morning" "yessir/nosir" thing. They never see the years I spent working from 8 am to 10 PM in salary jobs to try to move up, not to lick boots, not to be "a company" man, but just to afford decent money so I can just buy a home and finally own something. No one sees the hours and YEARS worth of projects and training that I have in experience. They only see the product of a guy who is just burned out and tired and only realizes that I'll never move up and earn money because it doesn't matter how hard I work, people have a natural mistrust of that they can't unwrapped from the DNA in their bones.
For me, going "above and beyond" means that I spent all weekend rearranging a project or restructuring a training class. For some fresh out of college white girl, "going above and beyond" meant that she worked past her shift for 10 minutes to update some excel sheet that she messed up in the first place. And then at the next town hall, they have an "employee spotlight" where they talk about what she did and somehow stretch it for 10 minutes. For me, exhibiting leadership means that I have to put my foot down and make hard decisions, even if people don't like it. And then I get labeled as "unprofessional" and I need a handler, like an animal at a zoo. For that same white girl with no experience, exhibiting leadership means that she's insanely unprofessional and rude, and her "leadership" gets suddenly labeled "tough and firm, but solid and fair".
So you DO eventually reach a point where you just become "Mr. Ngah" 🤷🏽‍♂️ Because if I act professional and become a credit to your operation, you're going to treat me as if I come in and clock in late and am rude. So what's the difference. I might as well ACTUALLY do those things. And that's what happened to me. And THAT'S why Tyson was the way he was with reporters. I even heard him mention as such on an interview one time that it doesn't matter if he acts like a gentlemen, they're just going to keep prodding him until he loses his calm. ANYONE can say "then just don't be that way". But no one ever says "yea, that guy spent years TRYING to get along with everyone."
