I got the Thor/Destroyer set along with this Doomsday set, both $60, and the McFarlane figures definitely beat out the ML figures in sculpt. I can't stop looking at Doomsday because he's so visually interesting. Superman has a beefier chest and proportions compared to Thor. The ML figures won in accessories and articulation but it doesn't matter that much to me. Oh and I meant Destroyer beat Doomsday in articulation, Thor actually lost to Superman. Thor's head can't move at all due to all that hair, and no butterfly joints for arms.
Not counting cameos, Doomsday first appeared in Superman: The Man of Steel #18 appropriately titled "Doomsday". I'm guessing Louise Simonson suggested the climax of the story match the scope of Thor #380 ("Mjolnir's Song") written 5 years earlier by her husband. The credit may belong to editor Mike Carlin. Either way, panels intentionally increased in size from that issue to Justice League America #69 ("Down for the Count"), Superman #74 ("Countdown to Doomsday"), Adventures of Superman #497 ("Under Fire"), Action Comics #684 ("...Doomsday Is Near"), and Superman: The Man of Steel #19 ("Doomsday Is Here"). So Superman #75 (also labelled "Doomsday") includes 28 violent splash pages pencilled by Dan Jurgens. As the Doomsday trading card suggests at 2:47, the action figure is officially based on a 2011 crossover known as Reign of Doomsday. As a matter of fact, this 4 part event written by Paul Cornell was called "Reign of the Doomsdays" at first. DC removed the plural one year later when a hardcover was published. Anyways, the art featuring Doomsday grasping Superman by the cape with Superboy & Supergirl defeated at his feet is by Kenneth Rocafort. It's the cover to Action Comics #901 which happens to be the first project Kenneth ever contributed for DC comics. 119 days later, he became the artist for Red Hood And The Outlaws during The New 52.
Nice two pack, on the fence. Really would have preferred a classic Doomsday headsculpt that matches his look in Death of Superman (similar to the Mattel one you compared to, with bones over the eyes)
I think there's more bang for the buck with the Mcfarlane over the Marvel Legends only because of the Superman as opposed to the Bruce Banner figures. It would also come down to if you prefer one toy line over the other as well. That grey Hulk though, I think, makes it worth the price point just because it's such a good piece. Also, I would have liked to not have the boots on the Doomsday character and something more like the Abomination Gamerverse figure feet instead.
Great review. I LOVE the Death of Superman series. Read the novelization back in the day (Death and Life of Superman) while playing the old SNES video game (Death and Return of Superman). I had to pre-order this two pack and it was my first McFarlane DC Multiverse figure ever. I think I like it okay; it's about on the same level as Marvel Legends for me. My Doomsday's right knee does not bend though, and the Superman's hands pop off way too easy. But Doomsday is an impressive looking toy. Looking forward to getting all the other Supermen to go along with this series.
Over all, I'm happy with the way Doomsday turned out. I have to use 2 of the stands to make sure he doesn't fall over but, he's pretty neat and def a figure we have all been waiting for Mcfarlane to do. That being said, I'm a bit peeved that we had to get him in a 2-pack with an unnecessary Superman (c'mon, who doesn't already have like 3 or 4 Mcfarlane Supermen?) instead of a stand-alone megafig.
The art on the back of the box and card is from a story called Reign of Doomsday. You can make out Supergirl, Steel, Superboy, Cyborg Superman, and The Eradicator below Doomsday.
Plastic choice for Superman might be the best flesh tone of the line. Im impressed with how much new is with Doomsday. I think this is a better value, the Hulk-Banner 2 pack lacks a lot of paint and way more reuse.
I love this set but I wish Supes cape had the yellow logo or at least there was a base that had that and the figures cape was more tattered and beaten up
That Mattel doomsday was not a correct in Connect figure it was sold as is in a box and it was the very last figure in the DC Universe Classics line, then they change the name
I mean... McFarlane's Megafigs run pretty consistently for about $40, and solo releases like Superman run $20-$25 (depending on accessories & distribution). So whether or not you think those solo release prices are fair I don't think we can say the price for this 2-pack is unexpected or inconsistent. And as far as comparative value to Marvel Legends, I'd state the same pricing argument. For what ML lacks in sculpt & paint apps they make up for in accessories & accurate character representation. And for what McFarlane lacks in accessories they make up for in sculpt & detail (not to mention the package backdrop adds play/display value as well).
My biggest issue with this is the thigh molds on Doomsday. If you look at it, it's bowlegged. His knees arch inward and make it awkward to kick to the point the left leg pops out if my not careful. And I'm not sure if it is just my figure by the knee pivots are insanely loose. Overall design I love it. How Fisted Hands dont go with a Superman Doomsday set is ridiculous.. 😂
Mine has okay knee pivots but it arrived with a patch of melted plastic on the leg. I think it damaged the joint because the right knee does not work. Assuming it shipped in some serious heat.
Believe me, this is perfectly proportioned with the head. The others look horrible with this same buck cuz their heads are too small and sometimes sit too low on the necks.
I like the few mcfarlane figures I have my only hang up is scale I like everything to be that same scale. I treat mcfarlane like diamond select if it's a bigger character I grab them if not I pass. Great reveiw!
That mattel DCUC wasn't a build a figure it was a deluxe I think. I know it sold by itself and was the last figure of the line. Anyway, I like this 2 pack.
Overall, looked really cool, a legit envisioning of that scene from the comics, with some embellishments. Then, about to buy, I looked closer. Like, that unnecessary dimple on the bottom of Superman's logo - why? Most egregious, not having the 'S' on Supe's cape - WHICH IS SHOWN IN THE PROMO SHOTS ON THE BOX. Give me a break. Plus, what you said, Shartimus, needed fist hands, he is fighting Doomsday, after all. And, for the price point, how about an exhausted and/or 'dead' head for Superman, which was also the whole point of this scene, and perhaps an included Supe's cape on a stick (with 'S' on it)? Been waiting for this for awhile, falls short, just because it cheaps out when it otherwise had everything going for it. Disappointed. Great review, though! :)
I'm not trying to be contrary but Kenneth Rocafort's cover for Action Comics #903 features Doomsday running into battle alongside Steel as Superman, Superboy, and Supergirl fly slightly above them. The text says "Doomsday...Ally?!"
I love how Doomsday looks but I don't like the engineering on the figure. So the average score is fair. Good thing I don't move my figures around much so he can just stand there and look badass with his sick sculpt. I also got the destroyer/thor set that also cost $60 and I have to say that I think McFarlane's set looks better side-by-side with the ML figures. Destroyer has better articulation and feel more solid but I wish I got the Marvel Select Destroyer years ago. That one had way more paint on it and is beefier.
When will McFarlane add more female figures to the DC Multiverse line? It's been 3 years and male figures are 99 to 1 female figures it seems. It's so frustrating...
I used to collect some MacFarlane. I started because of the Warhammer figures, but it was inconsistent, and the quality was meh so I gave up. I don't collect a lot of DC but most of it is Mafex (I have the Icons Darkseid) so I'll probably hold out for a possible Mafex version of Doomsday. But if people like this two pack, that's awesome 👏
My gripe with McFarlane toys is always with interchangeable hands. Like, cool, Superman has some. Doomsday has one open hand, one closed hand, and that is aggravating. I want a good Doomsday figure, scaled for 6 to 7 inch figures, with open and fisted hands. Come on! Storm Collectibles Injustice Doomsday figure is still probably the best one, in my honest opinion.
My ideal Doomsday is one that's a bit closer to the source material. A fewer spikes and a smoother complexion. So close yet so far. Still a cool figure though.
@@David-nq8cv Right. A Death of Superman series looking Doomsday. Todd's version here is a bit . . .exaggerated. Or is it? Is this what modern Doomsday looks like?

Doomsday looks good but he human faces always look flat or abit wonky. It’s another reuse of the Superman body again and again and no s on the back of the cape lack of detail bothers me but I’d still be interested in it for the doomsday
Believe it or not, Superman was usually depicted that way for decades. Curt Swan is close behind Jack Kirby as the second most prolific comic book artist ever. Curt's rendition of Clark's hairstyle from 1950 to 1996 (or 2018 if you count Action Comics #1000) could be described as receding. Keep in mind 'Reign of the Doomsdays' was the last Action Comics story prior to The New 52.
