Our lineup was Young and the Restless, Bold and the Beautiful, One Life to Live, then The Guiding Light. Brings back childhood memories at our grandparents' houses during the summer.
Classic soap opera. My mom watched this one Monday through Friday along with the young and the restless, the bold and the beautiful and as the world turns.
When I was in university, I'd sometimes switch from the end of "One Life to Live" on ABC to see the start of "Guiding Light", just to watch this version of the theme. I think this was the best "GL" opening. "This portion of 'Guiding Light' is presented by Tide. If it's gotta be clean, it's gotta be Tide!"
Agree with last comment. This opening is a true work of art. Why anyone would change it shows an immense lack of aesthetic sensitivity. The light flash, synched to the music is flawless right down to the final blackout. It won an Emmy, and it deserved it.
You know what's so quirky. Fiona Hutchison (Ex-Jenna Bradshaw's) Spot is the exact one where Beverly McKinsey was and they were both married to Roger Thorpe and while Jenna "Married" Buzz, Alexandra was involved with him. I didn't watch it then but I remember thinking Harley was a Femme Fatale.
I think this was when the show was at its peak in ratings. I remember it was at #3 at some point, and I believe that this theme song had a lot to do with it! Then they started tinkering with it changing the show format/style and it was down hill from there. The good old days of GL, I still miss to this day.
@@caseyhutchison7812 It was it's hey day, AC Mallet and Harley was my favorite couple at that time....and Blake had a dark side when played by Sherry Stringfield...Beth came back from the dead...and India helping Phillip when he was presumed dead.
Back when CBS did not just Guiding Light, but also The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and As the World Turns prior to this. I remember watching the introductions as a kid, didn't pay attention to the storylines but enjoyed these openings and the closing credits. Now we just have Y&R and B&B still running...still, I miss the '90s
When I was a kid and stayed home sick from school, my grandma used to have me record her soap operas on VHS for her so she could watch them later when she came home. Without looking at the clock, I knew what time of the day it was based on what soap opera I had to record. I knew it was morning time when Young and The Restless was on. I knew it was lunchtime when As the World Turns was on, and I knew school was ending for the day when Guiding light was on! The only break I got in between recording soap operas was the opening of time between Young and the Restless and As the World Turns when the Price Is Right was on! I miss those days :)
Also, the lighthouse made me think of the one on Tybee Island as a kid, when we first moved to Savannah, GA in 1992, I was four and I first saw the beach of Tybee and the lighthouse there, and I remember hearing the theme, those two things were what made me like lighthouses
My moms favorite show of all time. I remember having to sit down and watch this just to watch Garfield and friends. Dark wing duck and ducktales. Love you mom.number 1
Children of the 80s, our time will come. This life was good but repent because we know the day nor the hour and pray we see each other in heaven again.
Here's an interesting fact. They kept a picture of Maureen with Ed in the opening for almost 10 months after the character died. Usually when an actor leaves a soap they erase any trace of that actor immediately. This was a new updated montage with a picture of Ed with Michelle now and new faces like Bridget, David, Buzz, and Tangy added to the opening replacing Billy, Harley, and Mallet.
I remember the actress Amy Ecklund (Abby). I realized that she and I are both disabled and have had procedures. I was blind and had cataracts and wore contacts up until fifth grade when I got special bifocals that could help me see, just as Amy had her cochlear implant. I would love to meet her and tell her about my challenges with my vision and how we relate
1993 was an awesome year for GL. The stories were bar none...David and Kat, Alexandra’s fight for Spaulding from Roger, Who shot Roger Thorpe had all of Springfield as suspects...memories.
Josh, Reeva, HB, Alexandria, Alan Michael, Harley, Nadine, Frank, ...the gangs all here. Man i miss this show. Back when our grandmas called them stories.
It reminds me of the summers I spent growing up. This was one of the shows we would watch. It had many openings, but this one and the one from1983 stuck.
I wound up coming across this video, among others relating to it, just by surfing the internet as I usually do. Even though I haven't seen the show, this theme seems to bring some tears to my eyes, almost as though there's something emotional to it.
My late grandmother in Columbus Georgia would always watch guiding light episcially if Chicago cubs or Chicago White Sox afternoon baseball was on WGN Chicago
yep, GL continued on the radio for another four years after its premiere on CBS television..and GH has another 2y b4 passing GL - but GL, radio and telelvision combined, ran for 72 years!.......
I also remember when Guiding Light was on as a kid, I would construct a lighthouse out of alphabet blocks and put a toy light on top of it in front of the tv
Up until someone knocked the toy lighthouse over and put a hourglass (similar to the one shown on "Days of Our Lives") in its place Days of Our Lives (NBCUniversal) - better than Guiding Light (CBS Studios)
Ah. Back in 1993 when I would see this, that usually meant it was time to go in the back bedroom of my grandmothers house and turn on the afternoon cartoons while she watched her “stories” lol. I’d give anything to go back to those simple days.
it was around this time, after the O.J. interruptions, that a lot of shows went to 'shorter' openings..then budgen concerns made it a 'regular' thins..remember, AW's opening was 35s, then 27s - and finally, during the last year, they used 10-second mid-show bumpers as openings..and now GH is about 10s in length...
@Sheri451 this opening wasn't my favorite out of all the GL openings i've heard; the closing, i wish had been published - along with the vocal they played occasionally in the late-90s..the last opening was vocal i really didn't like, either (in fact, it gave me an excuse to channel surf...)
This portion of guiding light is brought to you by Tide. On some of your toughest laundry problems, If it's got to be clean, it's got to be tide.
LOL!
_"This has been Guiding Light. Belts provided by Giorgio of Beverly Hills."_

OH MY GOSH YES! That announcer used to scare me as a child
😂😂😂 DEAD!

That’s how you know
I loved watching Guilding Light with my Mom. Great show. I loved when the 4th of July came around because they always celebrated with Baurer Burgers 🍔
CBS last soap of the day
I watched it with my mom, and she watched it with her mom, who listened to it on the radio with her mom.
1993 happy times with my grandmother and mother, miss them so much and GL.
This has been Guiding Light!

Will forever remember this show....my mom loves this show....this was my childhood yall...miss the 90s
Been out since the 30’s what a long time
Classic soap opera. My mom watched this one Monday through Friday along with the young and the restless, the bold and the beautiful and as the world turns.
Same thing with my mom. Oh how I wanna be an elementary kid again
this opening theme is my favorite of all time. It's beautiful in EVERY way. The music, the visuals, the graphics...everything!
This would be a good song to hear while flying over a sparkling Atlantic Ocean at sunrise.
Agree with last comment. This opening is a true work of art. Why anyone would change it shows an immense lack of aesthetic sensitivity. The light flash, synched to the music is flawless right down to the final blackout. It won an Emmy, and it deserved it.
I miss this soap opera this is when soap opera's were soap opera's
This was my fave opening theme out of the whole show

My Favorite Theme Song Too Casey

@@ljrockstar69 You'd definitely be right. When this version aired, for the season, GL average a 5.4. For the next season, they dropped to a 4.4

Quick Turn on the Light (GUIDING LIGHT
This was my mom’s favorite soap. If she was off work, she didn’t miss it. She loved Reva
Holly was always my fave. She will live forever.
Also, the lighthouse made me think of the one on Tybee Island as a kid, when we first moved to Savannah, GA in 1992, I was four and I first saw the beach of Tybee and the lighthouse there, and I remember hearing the theme, those two things were what made me like lighthouses

This my favorite show guiding light they need too bring it back i miss 80 and 90
I loved this Guiding Light opening too!
Our sun
This kaleidoscopic intro got me hooked on watching the show. It was great then!
I'd rather see this than all the crappy talk shows.
You know, as a new fan of the soaps, I would like to see all four of the CBS soaps at their original times.
My favorite three couples from this soap were: Reva & Josh, Gus & Harley, and Olivia & Natalia.
Grandma...Go outside and play I'm watching my stories.
For E.V.E. Tokimatsuri 😊
My grandmother and i would watch this after school everyday.
the opening from 1991 was my all time favorite opening of GUIDING LIGHT ' hold on to love '
guiding light is one of the best soap operas of all time
One of my favorite show openings the lighthouse guiding light

0:41 You're watching Guiding Light, on Sky Soap. (1997)
This is one of my favorite themes along with the x-files theme and ER theme and star trek tng theme
Wow, the classical soap opera Springfield Story from RTLplus, very popular in Germany in the 80's and 90's on the afternoon timeslot
Guiding Light The Daytime Soap Opera Of All Time On CBS
GUIDING LIGHT FROM DOORS REAL!!11111!!!!!!
I also remember watching this with my grandmother
this is the best theme they had
Best theme, and best opening graphics.
I miss this show!
This was my childhood favorite 🤩
I would say this opening used way better special effects than today's CGI.
My grandmother and Mom would watch Guiding Light from the beginning to the end of the series
SURE DO MISS THE GUIDING LIGHT
The B level soap opera of the afternoon lineup
My late grandmother in Columbus Georgia would always watch guiding light episcially if Chicago cubs or Chicago White Sox afternoon baseball was on WGN Chicago
I wish Maureen had been in the opening. They never should've killed her off.
I remember this into I forgot about it for years
Bring this program back
The *BEST* Guiding Light intro
Loved Marcy Walker as Tangie Hill
The way my grandma and mom used to fuss at the TV.....good times
*Interesting fact:* this was originally a radio show before overlapping to television and was the longest running soap opera before *General Hospital*
