Matthew, when I had my health we helped a lot of people and really didn't think about it as that's how it should be. A older lady in line didn't have enough, so my spouse gave the cashier $ and said to give the change to the lady. She started crying because the change was the exact amount to pay her electric. We weren't doing great but she needed it more. It's not always money, it could be helping a neighbor just clean their yard when you know they can't. This catches on and makes both parties feel good 💞

One other thing (a few things)...You are a positive person. You are not political in your messaging. You are a family man. All the things I look up to you on are not acting related...that's a compliment🙂 You are a great actor but that's really beside the point. You are a good person...and that is worth a lot.
I think it also is how you were raised. My parents always told me to give anything and everything I do 110% . If you don't you should be embarrassed for not giving it your all. I also don't agree with the trophy for just participating. We are all unique and we all have different gifts. Finding your gifts and talents is the key. I was a medic from 1985-2012.
In 1993 I was a new paramedic. We worked as crews. Sometimes just 2. Sometimes many.
The Best Advice I was ever told was to NOT depend on everyone else being there. I had to know what to do and how to do it when there was only me.
Eventually I worked the busiest ALS unit in the county (Rescue 44) with some of the longest response (30-45 min) and transport times of sometimes an hour+ to a hospital.
My record was 23 calls in a 24 hr shift.
Only a few who were willing to EARN our patches would work our station voluntarily with high trauma and medical calls. I even ran a 25 min response time to my father in law and then had to go home down the street to tell my then wife he didn’t make it.
I carried that same ethic with me in the military 1985-2005 and 3 deployments.
There was no choice. We had jobs to do and people’s lives depended on us.
The life eventually caught up with me and it’s just hard to stay motivated these days. Hard to focus. Hard to have meaning while others choose not to work but then get everything for free from the gov’t which give me little back because I choose to work.
I spent the last 7 yrs in security with the last 2 providing safety for our school children. Most people are good but I must admit the racist anti-police parent who shot me a bird my last week in that job provide amazing incite into how low some humans are on the evolutionary scale and the pay didn’t pay the mortgage ... literally... future unknown.

What you’ve accomplished in the past may be great but it is today that matters.
If you can only take one step then take another and then the next and the next ......
One step may not be good enough but sometimes it’s all you have and better than nothing.
Just don’t stop. (That’s the voice in my head. Sometimes hearing voices is ok. Lol)

They just never got that lucky break" - Richard Widmark. Then he got up & walked away when Will Geer (Grandpa Walton) lit a joint & Lee Hazelwood (Some Velvet Morning} bummed cigarettes off me all flacken night. Me, an 18 year old kid scrubbing pots & pans and serving food for the cast & crew.

I taught my kids ( now adults ) that if you don’t want people knowing about something you’ve done ( because it’s embarrassing) then you already know that you shouldn’t have done it.

It's such a subtle distinction between doing our best for the highest good of all, and doing our best to prove how awesome we are. That being said, in short little interview questions like this one, it's hard to get into the nuances. But, based on so many of the choices that Matthew has made in his life, I trust that he means this with the spirit of service in mind, where humility is a part of embarrassment as it indicates where we're willing to grow.
Still, I'm glad that you added this to the thread cuz I've found that being motivated by embarrassment (as it hurts my pride) is not effective or sustainable if it's not ultimately rooted in caring deeply about serving something larger than me/us. Furthermore, I've found that depending on people's background, embarrassment can actually have the opposite effect and shut us down. This is especially true for folks who have perfectionistic tendencies (such as myself). Nonetheless, I hear Matthew here in that there is a place for taking more pride in who we are and our work. Honestly, after so many years working to heal myself from hyper-perfectionsism (the pinnacle of pridefulness) by accepting myself with my flaws, I think I may have gotten a little out of balance myself by not holding myself to higher standards. But it's a super fine line.

The answer so as not to be embarrassed is alright🤷 however, to be honest often times I have tried my best and still failed. Yes it was embarrassing but, if I let that be my reason to keep trying it would not work because people often judge wrongly: for example; no matter how hard my husband tried because of his cerebral palsy he did not excel at sports and was often very embarrassed as a youngster and ridiculed however, he pursued music and is an excellent piano player.
