Ghostface Killah for me has to be a top 10 rapper ever. Has two undeniable classics of his own in Ironman and Supreme Clientele, with some other albums you could consider, like Fish Scale, Apollo Kids or even 12 reasons to die or the Pretty Toney Album. He is also a big part of 3 classic albums - 36 Chambers, OB4CL, and Wu Tang Forever. Elite storyteller and lyricist, one of the best flows, and so fly with his rhymes, classic songs and verses, and also a great longevity.
Three undeniable classic. I would put Fishscale in that classic category with Supreme Clientele an Ironman. And he has a bunch of great albums with zero bad Hip Hop albums
I'm surprised you guys are just now doing this. Can't wait to give this a listen. You’ve done brackets, tier lists but never a formal Top 10. Great stuff
You guys should definitely do a top 10 list of your favourite hip hop groups of all time. Would be interesting to see how you rank the likes of OutKast, Wu tang and NWA
Even though NWA has a small catalog [Two albums (efil4*****n and Straight Outta Compton), a compilation (NWA and the Posse), and an EP (100 Miles and Runnin)] if anyone is higher than them I am gonna be mad lmao

For me a Top 10 rappers is based on Impact, Lyrics, Flow and Versatility. (Beat selection and composition falls more in best artist) My top 10 would be: *1. Eminem* - This man went out and beyond to break music records that nobody on rap did before. Yes he has 2 albums that I don't like, but he has the best trilogy of rap albums (imo), you never seen an artist this mainstream in rap who still loves the genre and respects everything about rapping this much, with some of the best rhymes schemes I've ever heard and phonetic perfect flows that sounds like it's own instrument. *2. Nas* - Nas' mind it's out of this planet. Someone who also loves rap so much, amazing catalog (even with Nastradamus), the best debut album, with verses that touched my soul and insane influence. *3. 2Pac* - Yeah, Idk what y'all smoking. If rap had a face, it would be Pac's face. One of the most powerful voices in rap, amazing discography, iconic figure in music and the best disstrack in rap. Plus 2Pac's work ethic is unmatched, this man pumped iconic rap verses and bangers like it was nothing. *4. Biggie* - Best flow in rap, two 10/10 iconic albums in music. Insane performances, and genius with imagery and painting pictures. *5. Jay-Z* - The rapper who everyone would wish to be. Amazing albums and classics, one of the best flows ever (yes I know he used flows from certain artists but he still added his own touch), and an insane talent to say a lot with less. *6. Rakim* - The man who changed the whole genre. Classic albums that still sound great till this day, amazing song concepts, really creative writing (kinda underated imo), and a true artist who loves rap. *7. Andre 3k* - (It hurts so much not having him in top 5) The 2nd best flow ever (fight me), near-flawless catalog, insane song concepts and some of the best verses in rap are from this man. *8. Kendrick* - One of the best storytellers and concept writer. Not only being a genius with rhyme schemes and voice changes but also make it so his music hits mainstream while still maintaining substance and artistry. *9. Lil Wayne* - He influenced every rapper you hear today, the best punchliner, iconic voice, insane run of albums and mixtapes, and an icon in rap. *10. MF DOOM* - The most creative writer I've ever heard, amazing influence and impact, otherworldly rhyme schemes and iconic persona. *Honorable Mentions:* Kanye West, Ghostface Killah, Mos Def, Talib Kwali, Black Thought, Common, Raekwon, Method Man, Lupe Fiasco, KRS-ONE, Busta Rhymes, Big L, Big Pun, Lauryn Hill, Q Tip, LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and Scarface.
@@kane_howe138 2Pac has some of the most impactful lyrics in rap. And what's genius about it is that, even tho lyrically I don't place him above Lupe Fiasco or Aesop Rock, Having the talent to make powerful lyrics that can connect with people and make millions feel your emotions it's a different type of skill. Not to mention, this man was recording and working like in 3 songs a day. The fact that he was able to constantly put out bangers after bangers and still have so much material with substance, emotion and vulnerability it's insane. Plus if we talk about impact, almost nobody it's as iconic as 2Pac in rap, and if we talk about flow, voice and performance, Pac was able to use everything in his arsenal to perfectly display his emotions in a way that I haven't seen other rapper do it like him.

It would be interesting to do a separate top 10 video for each component that you considered. For example, skill, impact, etc. Then see how the holistic overall top 10 list pans out based on each component list.
It's truly beautiful to be part on a deep dive into this topic. Here is my personal top 10 that has formed over the past 23 years since I started listening to rap music, or better to say music in general. Here we go: 2Pac Nas Eminem Masta Ace Jay-Z Guru André 3000 Kendrick Lamar Kanye West DMX
I don't get the time factor that people consider for Kendrick, Ok he is relatively new to the game when compared to Nas or MF DOOM. But put Biggie and Pac on their top 3-5 when unfortunately they also don't have the longest career... For me Time factor really don't count much..
Yup, can't use time factor but then turn around and put Biggie inside the Top 5 when he literally released less overall music than Kendrick... Either longevity matters or it doesn't for everyone, can't pick and choose.
Kendrick is the greatest to me because he can do super lyrical MF DOOM level technical raps like Black Friday and then poetry like Sing About Me or Complexion. Also he knows how to use his voice. He knows how to layer his voice like no other. Also the greatest hip hop performer all time (Grammys 2016)

1. Nas 2. Andre 3K 3. Notorious B.I.G 4. Jay-Z 5. MF DOOM 6. Kendrick Lamar 7. Eminem 8. Black Thought 9. Rakim 10. I do feel like Kanye is the greatest hiphop artist of all time, but as a rapper he is not top 10 for me. HM: Lupe Fiasco 2Pac Ghostface Killah Big Boi
Ant had a better list. I don't understand how Luca can argue for Kanye on his list then count out 2Pac for technical ability. 2Pac is undeniably the most influential and referenced rapper of all time, some of the best content matter, some of the best songwriting, dude can ride a beat, one of the best flows, some of the deepest songs (So Many Tears, Death Around the Corner etc.), probably the most emotive rapper, a fantastic 3 album run, arguably the best double album in rap, diverse song types (party songs, diss songs, gangsta songs, conscious songs, emotionally moving songs etc.), finally he even has the sales. He's the #8 best selling rapper ever and is still doing more streams than rappers operating today. 2Pac is arguably the GOAT.
Pac is most iconic but no u can't tell his most influential. And I can't stand putting pac over Kendrick and Black thought. But both lists are very similar to each other and they're predictable.
One thing I'd like to see included more in these convos is live performances. I know it's hard because some rappers we will never get the chance to see, but seeing Black Thought live at a jazzfest just opened my eyes to what a hip hop concert could be.
Can you please do a breakdown on the different sub genres of rap? It would be nice to get some examples of artists in each field and some basic definitions to relate better to some of the concepts described in the videos
This is a great video. Not one explanation was similar to the other, on either side. Each argument was clearly thought out and distinct from the next. You can tell that you two are very knowledgeable in the rap space.
Not feeling the 2pac slander from buddy on the left but the video was entertaining. Take those 10 on your list and see how they stack up against Pac in a Verzus. Nobody prior to the 2000s didn’t consider Pac a lyricist.
He genuinely doesn't rock with 2Pac its not the first time, and because he doesn't connect with him he uses naive, ignorant statements that are easily debunked. Furthermore, he hasn't stepped foot outside the country to see 2Pac's "musical impact" is enormous. Also without 2Pac Kendrick doesn't exist. Kendrick sighted 2Pac as the reason why he showcases vulnerability in his music.
1. Nas 2. Biggie 4. Method Man 5. Eminem 6. Kendrick Lamar 7. Ghostface Killah 8. Jay-Z 9. Ice Cube 10. Pusha-T I've not listened to so much music for example never heard an Outkast or MF DOOM record but I chose rappers that nobody argue against being at least in the consideration.
my favorite rapper of all time is eminem, but without a doubt, no question, objectively, the best rapper of all time is Nas. I can't even say its close, Illmatic is the best rap album of all time, and one of the greatest albums ever in general. His music hasn't dipped in quality whatsoever imo, 30 years in the game and still going strong.
Barely any one was writing raps like 2Pac with that level of vulnerability. He purposely didn’t want to be the over lyrical because he knew the message could be felt how it was, but he could spit when he wanted, not to mention he has one of the most iconic deliveries, he could rap soft and thoughtful and then at rapid force when he wanted. “They say pussy and paper is poetry, power and pistols” That’s just the opening line
"Some dudes use big words to make their similies curve but my simplest shit be more pivotal." - Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick cited 2Pac also as the reason he feels comfortable being vulnerable in his music.
Ice Cube unquestionably belongs in the top 10, defs surpassing Kanye and DOOM, both of whom I admire. Witnessing him recently preform live he reminded me of his incredible talent. He possesses exceptional lyrics, skill, an extensive catalog with heaps of bangers, memorable moments, massive beefs and diss songs, and a significant contribution that ranks highly on every scale you can imagine. He introduced NWA, West Side Connection, and gangsta rap, not to mention his impressive and enduring solo career.

Ant's list is very solid, I find it very strange that Lu doesn't have Pac in his top 10. For me the top 6 should have Pac, Big, Nas, Jay-Z, Kendrick and Ye regardless of the order you put it in.
Disagree. Tupac doesn't have the quality of discography and skillset to go against any of the rappers mentioned in those lists. The genius that goes behind flow, wordplay, lyricism, production are much better exhibited by a lot of other rappers and I think anyone who truly appreciates the art of Hip Hop would say that. I think Tupac is kind of overrated in this aspect. He has influence and he has impact but that's all because of the subject matter in his songs. If anyone is being honest with themselves, how is that enough to dismantle geniuses who could manipulate complex words to form in depth pictures and narratives? There should be a difference between having your favorite rappers list and the greatest rappers list. The former is subjective but there needs to be solid criteria for the latter and for me that's 1. Discography and skillset 2. Impact (be it commercial, popularity wise, or simply on the genre itself musically) To be in the top 10 you need to check both boxes and there are a lot of rappers who do that. Tuoac has enormous impact sure but discography + skillwise he falls short of the geniuses that are mentioned here. It's not that he's bad or anything, the others are just too good. People just don't wanna say it because it's popular and cool to love Pac and put him as the greatest. If people would have actually went through discographies of the rappers mentioned here (which 99% of them haven't lol), they would also say that. Btw I listen to Pac a lot more than some of these rappers but I'm willing to put my bias aside to have an objective pov.
@@mohash21 I love these kinds of discussions, in the sense that what we differ on is what is relevant to each of us when considering a rapper in the top 10 of history. In my case, obviously I consider discography and techniques, but it is not defining, especially when we talk about Tupac, because his legacy goes beyond what today's "internet music nerds" (I include myself in that category) have practically unanimously established as "important" when evaluating an artist or putting him in a ranking. Because of his context, he told stories, he wrote poetry, his lyrics moved helpless people, he was one of the first rappers to show emotionally in songs like "life goes on", he was the first to speak from a female point of view in "keep ya head up", the best diss track ever (in my opinion) in "hit em' up". His career was cut short by circumstances, but he surely would have continued to influence and create beyond what was established at any given time. He had a tremendous flow, very powerful lyrics full of emotion, a stage presence I've never seen anyone else have and was the icon of conscious hip hop, we probably wouldn't have a Kendrick Lamar if it wasn't for Pac. I could go on, but at least everything I told you for me is more relevant than "if he has an impeccable discography" or how many wordplays he used in each song. Having a couple of bad songs on an album doesn't take away from all that it means, to anyone who grew up in the 90's Tupac is probably the face of hip hop and the one who made it interesting outside of the US. Where I disagree is to say that no one who appreciates the art of hip hop would put 2Pac in their top 10. By saying that, you are saying that most of the rappers that you yourself love don't appreciate the art of hip hop, because most have Pac in their top 10, the strange thing is not considering him within the ranking. I guess Kendrick doesn't appreciate the art of hip hop either .
@@mohash21discography? Pac in 5 years dropped 3 all time great classic albums. Some people on this list barely have 1 or 2. Like ya Pac first 2 albums are not classics because he was still evolving as an artist. As a lyricist? Pac is arguably the most quoted rapper of all time. He wasn’t on par technically as the others because wasn’t writing his rhymes on a technical skill concept majority of the time. But other then that he was very diverse as a lyricist. He can write a very concise song, emotional songs, story telling or political songs all in a consistent manner. Many rappers cant do that in a consistent manner that he did . I’m saying he did all that in 5 years give credit we’re credit is due.
@@moe-cy3xp there are many rappers even today who are super consistent in writing and versatile in their lyricism. Simply that shouldn't be anyone's criteria to judge greatness in a genre. Let's assume Muhammad Ali was a moderately skilled boxer but was only known for what he did outside of boxing and for that people started calling him the 'greatest boxer of all time' cuz he 'impacted a lot of people'. Would that make sense? That's the same thing with Pac. Technical skill is a REQUIREMENT to be considered amongst the greatest rappers of all time. You're competing against geniuses who can craft complicated schemes to paint intricate storylines and dense narratives (and all of the rappers mentioned do that better than Pac. Not even a question lol.) . I'm sorry that's just too important for me who appreciates the process and thought and genius that goes into that. All the things you're mentioning about consistency and versatility and whatnot show makings of a good artist, not an excellent rapper. And outside of Wayne and Biggie, who has only 1 or 2 classics? (Wayne makes up for it with his impact, skill and longevity and relatively good discography regardless and Biggie's discography is easily amongst the greatest with arguably the greatest or at least top 3 rap album of all time and quite easily the greatest double album of all time). The rest have a ten times better discography SINCE THEIR DEBUT than Tupac. And lyricism wise, the other rappers offer you way more, I don't what you're talking about when you compare Pac with them. Like seriously. Who would you put Pac above in this list in terms of lyricism??? Yeah he has quotables. Ya'll would actually think I hate Tupac or something lmao. Nah I actually listen to him more than some rappers on these lists but I understand that favorite and best are two different things. And when it comes to who's the best, there are many names I would put above Pac being unbiased. People love Pac a lot, I get it. But he's been overrated and overhyped way beyond measure ever since his death. He's been made into this martyr and some messiah whereas you can find a lot of holes in the way he lived and acted yet no one seems to want to hear it. It's just cool to call Pac amongst the greatest and most of his fans have 100% NEVER listened to A LOT of these rappers' discographies who are mentioned on the list but seem to have the most sweeping opinions on them.

I always go back n forth between Ghostface, Black Thought, & Rakim for my 10 slot
Three undeniable classic. I would put Fishscale in that classic category with Supreme Clientele an Ironman. And he has a bunch of great albums with zero bad Hip Hop albums
And some of the greatest beats ive ever heard are on supreme clientelle and Ironman
Ghostface is easily in the top 5-10. I don't get how he doesn't make these lists.

For me a Top 10 rappers is based on Impact, Lyrics, Flow and Versatility. (Beat selection and composition falls more in best artist) My top 10 would be:
How you gonna say lyricism is a main factor then have 2pac in your list? In terms of lyricism he isn’t even a top 15 rapper

Disagreement is not slander though. Lets be clear slander is calling someone a rapist, saying he is not in the top 10 is not slander at all.

Ant's list is very solid, I find it very strange that Lu doesn't have Pac in his top 10. For me the top 6 should have Pac, Big, Nas, Jay-Z, Kendrick and Ye regardless of the order you put it in.
I think this is the best list I’ve ever seen
The former is subjective but there needs to be solid criteria for the latter and for me that's
1. Discography and skillset
2. Impact (be it commercial, popularity wise, or simply on the genre itself musically)
To be in the top 10 you need to check both boxes and there are a lot of rappers who do that.
One sentence describes Nas the best: Pac was like Jesus, Nas wrote the bible
