Southampton hotels are in pretty high demand as people travel to the cruise port and stay, so we did a lot of research on the best accommodation options in this part of England. room2 is the site we kept coming back to, it's not a hotel, it's not just accommodation, it's the worlds first hometel... which sounded interesting!
We decided to travel to Southampton a few days earlier and scope out this new kind of accommodation option, we're glad we gave it a try! If you're looking for hotels in Southampton we can highly recommend you give room 2 a look:

There's not a huge amount online when searching for what to do in Southampton, so we kept things local, at least after we finally pulled ourselves away from room 2 haha. Bargate is one of the more common search results and the history in this part of the UK comes up often also - all worthy of a little travel day to explore.

About a 100 yards from where you were staying is the oldest Bowling club in the world, been in use since the 1200s, Along the High street was the Red Lion where Henry the 8th once stayed. you could have visited the Titanic Museum in the Town center, I enjoyed your Video. Theres also a road called Botany Bay road, and People used to leave the port of Southampton to emigrate to Australia on a £10 single fare ticket, we used to be known as the £10 pound Pomme's. I have lived here since the 1960s and I like SOTON short for Southampton.
I'm from Southampton, all of the old walls were actually a giant floodgate and people used to row their small boats through the bargate. All of the land you walked on for the port, the train station and your hotel etc is "reclaimed" land, they dammed it all off and filled it with soil. If you saw the big pyramid type hotel further up there is an old pub opposite people used to sail up to and go into as well. You also passed one of the oldest pubs in England called the red lion, and has been named that since the 15th century.
What a wonderful "Hometel", love it.

Great video. So right that there’s so much history in that town. The Mayflower also left from Southampton to take the Pilgrims for America.
Much of the history was lost during world war 2 as the town was battered in air raids.
I like the concept of the hometel. I know there are long term rental options in the hotel accommodation market but this one is very fresh & modern. Thanks for sharing!
It totally is! There's actually people living long term in room2, treating it like an apartment (which it is really) and loving it.
I have stayed here in room 202 I believe I can’t really remember but it was a lovely room and felt like a home

Agreed! Southampton as a whole is a little on the high side with the cruise ports so close, but the value at Room2 is great.

Titanic was built (and so was launched) in Belfast, registered in Liverpool, and departed on its maiden voyage from Southampton.

20 degrees is enough to get us excited in the UK! Yesterday it bucketed with rain all day and the temperature struggled to reach 11 degrees - in June FFS!!! Love that hometel - what a fantastic concept. Really enjoyed your tour in the older parts of Southampton - I've only ever been there to board a ferry so it was really interesting to see how much the city has to offer.
20 degrees is a treat isn't it! Funny actually, we went past Brixton area recently in a taxi and it was one of those warm days - we were SHOCKED at the thousands of people in the parks in bikinis etc. So funny for us to see, but you gotta embrace it while you got it huh.

I live and work in Southampton and I'm so used to just thinking of it as a shithole, its funny seeing someone's perspective who has never been here. We do get huge cruise ships in like The Independence of The Seas and The Navigator, however whenever I see them on my way to work, i know works going to be mental 😂
Funny how that happens, you always look at where you live/work as being pretty boring or normal - glad we can show you another side to it!

Honestly, yeah, it does. Lifes about balance though right. We work as we travel, adventure is our reward, but being away from family and friends can be hard.
