Just remember: Qui Gon getting stabbed in the stomach (as in nowhere close to his vitals) is enough to kill him within minutes. Darth Maul literally chopped in half and thrown down a deep deep hole is merely an inconvenience because fan service.
In this I personally like to believe that the squadron of droids that could feel pain were the only droids that could feel pain in the entire galaxy, and the reason for that is just because the person they hired to program that squadron really hated droids… for no reason at all.
