    Excellent advice. Old school basics....As a retired Police K9 handler, your methods are sound and effective. NOTE to new dog owners: seek help from a professional trainer if you can't do this on your own, 90% of the problems I've seen in over 40 years are with or because of the owner/handler!

      @@sekurmsekurm7343 you didn't even watch the video and have no clue what are prong collars/e collars. Prong collars are less painful than normal collars if your dog is pulling. E-Collars are the last of the last possibilities for dog to correct it's behaviour before it would be put to sleep. If all your life you had a chihuahua and yorkies, on behalf of dog trainers and professional dog owners, don't state your BS over the internet making people think prong collars are bad.
      Even in the video 80% of the job done was not through the collar itself but with positive reinforcement BUT prong is much better for you dog than normal collar if it's pulling/being aggressiive since it signals wrong behaviour instead of choking the dog. If the dog ain't pulling prong collar isn't doing any harm to it, it's exactly how it works.

      @@sekurmsekurm7343 It's far more unethical to let a dog drag the owner around and be an absolute nuisance to the community. Plus, those "force free" trainers are just trying to get you to buy their stuff. I have never met a positive-only trainer that could solve a problem with 2 tools: A leash and a collar. They need dog owners to buy more stuff: More treats, more pouches, lick sticks, calming sprays, special place mats, expensive harnesses, more training sessions, longer training sessions... the list goes on. They've been sold a lie in order to sell product.
      Enough. Dogs are not made of china. They will not break if you apply a little pressure. I encourage everyone to look up a video called "Experienced mother dog teachers her puppies a lesson in patience." It's just 2 minutes long. The puppies are under 8 weeks old. They display unacceptable behavior. Mom corrects them with a commensurate amount of violence. She doesn't bait them with treats, she doesn't wait for the puppies to get bored. She issues a stern correction, and the lesson is learned instantly.

      It didn't correct the behaviour. You simply taught the dog that you would hurt them if they walked too far ahead. If you were to put on a harness, the dog would pull again because you haven't changed the pulling behaviour. Changing a behaviour takes weeks, not 10 minutes.

    • @matthewmielke7161
      @matthewmielke7161 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@samg8012that is foolish. "Hurt the dog if they walk too far ahead" is simply ridiculous, snapping the collar does not "hurt" the dog. 2. Don't put the dog on a harness. 3. Obviously one session won't change the dog forever, but after a few weeks of walks where the dog is doing this and walking how you like, it WILL become their behavior.
      I am assuming that by "changing behavior" you mean if the trainer drops the leash, the dog won't take off running. OBVIOUSLY. Nobody is saying your dog will immediately be this super obedient dog in 10 minutes. All this video is doing is showing how to stop your dog from pulling on a leash, which is the first step to making your dog more obedient, and able to do stuff like walking without a leash. Your comment is simply LOOKING for something to be mad at, cause there's no way.

      @@samg8012 I literally just finished the end of the video. He even says one walk won't completely solve the issue, but after 3-4 walks the dog will know how to walk on a lead. Which, yes. It's common sense. After a few walks of getting treats for walking correctly. And small correction when they don't. It will become habit and the dog will walk on a lead with no issue.

    I watched this video 3 times and then went and tried this with my 6 month old German Shepherd and HOLY COW! The ONLY things we worked on during our walk were the sudden u-turn and the sudden stop pop and I can't believe the difference. We are currently enrolled in an intermediate puppy training class and she does great in class but using only the techniques they taught just wasn't working at home. I have been dreading our walks as getting dragged around gets old FAST. This made a huge difference. After about 5 u-turns she had it down to walk at my side...by no means a perfect heel but way better. Towards the end of the walk (just under a mile) she started to forget and it took just 2 uturns to remind her. Her sudden stop isn't perfect but it's way better than it was and this was only the first session so I know in a few more she'll be amazing. I don't have a prong collar, just a martingale and it worked great on that. I'll move to a prong if I need to but this girl is so eager to please I'm not sure I will need it. Thank you for making some simple and straightforward.

    THANK YOU! I've trained dogs for over 30 years. I started out with this method and always had great success but over the years I've caved in to a softer approach because of all of the social pressure. I am retired, but currently training my own pulling puppy and taking so long to get desired results. I really needed this reminder to get back to basics. A softer approach while your dog damages their trachea on a flat collar may keep the Karen next door from bashing you throughout the neighborhood, but it is not doing the dog any favors.

    • @Troy-Echo
      @Troy-Echo 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, which is actually more kind? To get the training done in a few sessions and move on, or spend weeks or months trying to do this when you could have been done and enjoying walks with your dog? If something this simple takes weeks or month to train, the other methods are obviously just unclear commands to the dog. America has unfortunately flipped and now everybody thinks they have the right to chime in on how you live your life, and they are always right, and you must comply with what they say or you're a mean and cruel person. I'd just act deaf, ignore them, and keep walking along as if they don't exist. They nor their opinions are worth my time or mental effort. It takes two to argue, so silence leaves them nothing to debate, and they just look like an idiot yelling for nothing.
      If they want to call the cops, I'd encourage it. I'd ask them to make sure they ask for the Police K9 officer on duty to be the officer to respond but tell the Karen not to be surprised when they show up with their dog wearing a prong collar, e-collar, and flat collar and/or a choke chain.
      I've walked Echo on a prong collar for the past 18 months through streets, Lowe's, Home Depot, the vet's office, all over the place, and nobody has ever said a word to me. If they ever want to, I'd happily offer to have an educated and civil discussion on prong collars or e-collars. I'm sure anybody that wants to gripe about it has zero true knowledge on how to use these tools correctly anyway. Knowledge is power, and they won't have the power/knowledge to back up their trash talk.

My last dog was a GSD mix and we had to put her down when she was 15, and that was from an aggressively growing tumor. We have two dogs, an outdoor cat (they get along like their own little pack), and a bearded dragon. We love them dearly, but they are just well loved pets. Thank you so much for posting this video. The golden in this video was doing what my beautiful 5 month (40 lb ) female golden does. I am a 68 year old Female and her pulling was hurting my arms, back and shoulders. I was getting to the point I didn't want to walk her. Your video came across my feed. I'm so glad I clicked on it. I ordered the prong collar you recommended and some super good treats. I've watched this video 6 times so I knew what to do confidently. The collar came yesterday. Today I put it on her and within 10 minutes she was walking by my side and looking up at me. YEA!!! After that I walked her 2 blocks. NO PULLING at all. I have fallen back in LOVE with my golden. I subscribed. I've watched several others. She now knows come and drop it. Thank you so much.

      This is probably more for exercise. If you need your dog to pee you might want to pick a designated area and tell the dog "go pee" and just loosen the leash. My dog knows he can't go till he gets to the dog park and he is free.

    I was really hopeful when I saw this video. We have a pitbull mix that is 5 years old and my family never had a dog. We have him, since our cousin surprised us with him. When we walked him he was constantly pulling so we were trying to look for solutions and people to train him but no one really knew what they where doing and of course the training was expensive so when I saw this training method, I was honestly very happy. So when I walked the dog, I put on the prong collar, and I started doing the methods and after a few minutes he was walking right next to me with no pulling and a loose leash, and was making eye contact, and when I stopped, he stopped. So overall this guy know what he’s doing. You just got yourself a new subscriber. ❤😂😊

    I have used this with every dog I trained, including all of my working dogs. When you do the U Turn, try to remember to keep the leash low (at their head level) so it doesn't take them off their front paws. It's actually a more effective correction if you do. I'm from MA/NH.

    Have a corso puppy now 7 months. Been doing this since 4 months and he walks like a pro. His drive and pain tolerance is insane but it still works. Started with a martingale, taught some leash pressure then introduced him to prong at 4 months. Let him wear the prong, put it a little oversized, associated treats with it whenever I put it on and now he’s golden. Herm Sprenger 2.25 does wonders. He’s now 86lbs and well behaved.

      Imperative for our big breeds to be trained and well behaved, much more so than other breeds. I've rehabbed rotties, corsos and boerbels that ended up on death row just because they had the wrong owners.
      These breeds were bred to be tough dogs to do their jobs and they can kill without proper training and supervision. As much as I love them, there's a reason why homeowners insurance doesn't cover them and they're banned in some places...it started with idiot owners 🤬

    I will try this method soon but definitely without a prong collar because my husky was freaked out by any collar or any type of hook around his neck. It takes 2 weeks and several bites to get used to walking on the leash outside of our garden.
    Now we can walk any time and I can put him on leash any time without bite. And also he is waiting the walks. I adopted him on 2023 december 18, he was 1 year old. He was never on leash before I adopted him. And I don't want to screw up what I already achieved.

      You're not alone! You're doing great. We adopted our husky around the 1 year mark. He was free range outside and it has been tough. We have him used to the harness but still pulls a lot. I'm scared of the collar as he can pull his head out even if it's super tight

      @@KelseyHubley Thank you have a good luck. This happened with mine at first time outside he was freaked out by something and he got to go to the opposite direction and yes his head slipped out from the collar. It was set to the tightest. It was hard to catch. He is quick. We practice with retriever leash since a week.
      Unfortunately we could not practice the leash walk in the garden until now because he started to flee and he submissed himself and he didn't move if I put him on leash. After he stopped the fleeing I brought him out to the street by my hand and he started to walk slowly but he was scared. And the same happened when we arrived back home he didn't dare to go in the garden I had to bring him in and he started to flee again after we got in the garden. This is why I'm afraid of the prong collar. I don't want that he feel the collar and the leash and walk can hurt and it can be bad.

    I’ve watched hrs of this guy in the last few days and I’m so happy I did! I adopted a pittie a year ago and was told she walked well on the leash and did well with other dogs. She is a friendly girl with people but too rough. Also she was terrible on our walks and aggressive towards other dogs. I found out she was a bait dog! I did know she was scarred and had been injured before and didn’t see any of these problems coming. I’m in my 50s, legally blind and have some physical disability so walking her has been very difficult and stressful. In ONE DAY, 2 walks has changed everything! It’s still not perfect and I’ve also learned I had to train myself at the same time which has been harder than training her. Thank you DIYK9.com for helping me train my dog.
    I did this with my Husky/Treeing Walker Coonhound mix at 4 months. ONE corrective U-Turn was all I needed, and it was a messy one at that because it was my first ever. Everything else was cleaned up with sudden stop pops and food rewards. We do figure 8's, speed up, slow down, left and right turns, and she still walks well at 21 months old.
    I practiced in the backyard a couple days and hit the road. I had to do one more corrective U-Turn as the level of distraction jumped up significantly, and now we can walk up on rabbits (one of her triggers) and I can put feather light leash pressure to ask for a sit (from the Leashed course training), and we just stand there until the rabbit takes off. Echo stays in the sit.

    OK. I'm BRAND NEW to dogs and now I'm blessed with a 9 month old Pitbull Mix (maybe Hound or German Shepard). I bought your course and its taking me time to go through it. However, my teenagers are down there goofing off and let's just say I'm in over my head. However, THANK YOU for this video. I've had three hand/wrist surgeries in the past and this dog came to us with a harness. I was physically unable to walk him period. It's taken me forever to figure out the coller/leash, pressure, pops, clicks etc etc etc. I feel like I'm learning more than the dog! It's my 5th time watching this video over the last week and TONIGHT I am putting and end to the pulling. Thank you again so much. *I am still a bit confused with the 2.25mm as its been a project to get enough links for his size. I've been using the larger 3mm in the meantime and now I'm wondering if the 2.25 is going to feel sharper than the 3mm? Also, I know its covered in the course and videos, but for some reason I still get mixed up on the hook/double hook pressure. I told you I am brand new. I'm going to try my all for this guy, but I know better than unless and until I get a handle on him - I'm not doing right by letting him act a mess.

      Generally the 2.25 works for most dogs, but many times it will be necessary to add links, or in some cases it’s actually less expensive to just go ahead and purchase two collars and connect them together. You may have to remove a couple of links when you do that, but sometimes it is more cost-effective to just to go ahead and purchase two collars rather than individual links. The 2.25 will have a bit more “oomph” behind it than the 3.0.

    Your videos are so helpful. I have a 1 yr 50 pound husky pit mix. I tried weeks of leash training, 5 minutes of prong collar training fixed his pulling issues damn near immediately.

    I have two young German Shepherd mixes (a year apart). One pulls hard, and the other pulls less, but nothing I’ve tried has worked-different advice, collars, you name it. My older girl pulls so much that even after a 2-3 km walk, she has to stop every block just to get home.
    Prong collars are illegal here, but I used a choker chain and tried your techniques right after watching. While I’m not as skilled as you, both dogs eventually stopped pulling! My older girl needed more turning around, so we stayed on the same street, but my younger boy stayed by my side, and we managed a long walk.
    Great advice-thank you! I’ll keep practicing daily and hope to eventually walk them together, as separate walks are tough.
