You have a beautiful garden Joel, very lush and lots of plant diversity. Since so much of your time is spent on working on other people's garden, what a treat, when you get a chance to sit, observe and listen to nature surrounding you. It's like food for the soul, well done!
Thank you so much - it certainly is a haven when I manage to get 5 minutes in it! You know how it is with winter, you leave for work in the dark and return in the dark and then I find I have to do admin/quotes/designs for new clients when it comes to the weekend. I'm really looking forward to when Spring is finally here though and the evenings are lighter for longer :) Best wishes - Joel
Great woodland wildlife garden and good to see purple toadflax present as it's such a brilliant plant for bees. I'd find a place for viper's bugloss, even if just in pots but no garden can have everything. I personally like to have some short turf leading to a pond edge.

Thanks Dave, really appreciate your support :) I've been designing and installing wildlife gardens and larger areas for over 16 years now, unfortunately meaning I don't get to spend enough time in my own ;) There is/was Viper's Bugloss around the pond edge and it's a plant, along with Bugle, that I always ensure is planted in client's spaces - I'm really considering improving the pond area this autumn and re-thinking the meadow area too - will of course make a video of it :) Best wishes to you and yours, Joel
my teasel last year grew to seven feet , its sowed its self as id never heard of teasel and left it to see what it turned into, i was amazed by the flowers and the bees and beetles approved

Lovely video of your garden. I immediately recognised the pink Dianthus flowers (dianthus caryophyllus pink kisses). So far it is my favourite foreground plant, it smells amazing to. I have 3 in a small 30 cm wide pot, I already had this plant when still living in a flat with balcony. It wasn't to happy there. That changed completely when we moved house and it had a nice spot in the southeast facing backyard and rain for watering. Eventually I placed it near the front door which is northwest facing. The flowers looked so beautiful, clustered together blooming like their lives depended on it. The smell was amazing, our toilet is situated right next the front door, so we didn't needed any artificial scents at all🥰 I planted a good amount on the edges of our walkway close to the paving last summer. I also bought the salvia nemorosa 'ostfriesland', I like the name because my county name is in it (Friesland). I'm curious how it will develop this year. Your book arrived 2 days earlier then expected, so I will have a nice read this weekend and week👍🏻📗🐞🐛🦋🐝🪱🪳🌷🌹🌼🌿🌻
Oh and I think a hydrangea macrophyllum lacecap in white will look amazing in that corner with the lounge chairs. Bees and such love to drink the nectar and small birds can find refuge in it. My parents-in-laws have a nice elderly home with a nice planted front yard. The neighbours next to them has several trees and bushes there, including a white macrophyllum. There are always a few birds hiding in there and looking for food. It looks so peaceful there in summer.

Marvellous Joel. As a youngster I got hold of the Chris Baines book "How to Make a Wildlife Garden" and Geoffrey Smith's book "The Joy of Wildlife Gardening." Hey - how ARE you?! So sorry for the absence, it's been the usual but ten-fold lately! Greenhouse so so hot in this weather of late too which means early morning and late evening watering before I even get home :/ Working 6 and sometimes 7 days a week at the moment to keep all the client works on track, but it's worth it for the habitats that are being created :) I do hope you are well, we're doing fine this side - best wishes as always - Joel

Birds drink from it everyday-
I’ve had frogs grow from tadpoles and frogs spawn this year.

Thank you for a lovely tour and super ideas. I have a hedge of Walkers Low Nepeta which is loved by the bees. I find it is not quite as big as six hills giant and doesn’t flop. I am now going to put some native valerian in the garden. I too love the purple toadflax and dot it around my garden along with the purple verbena. This year I have had so many more insects, hardly any butterflies though. The mullein caterpillars have ravaged all the verbascums!! Look forward to the next tour.

Great video Joel and the garden is looking fantastic, a real food buffet for the local wildlife.
The dog rose is such a beautiful plant isn't it. The barrel pond is such a great idea, there's so much life in this garden, only a tiny percentage of it seen.
Got me curious about your project building something else for wildlife.. Do you get Hedgehogs passing through? 🙂

Love your garden. Just trying to rewild mine. Getting there but I too have lots of shade so working out best planting to manage a north east facing garden with a black walnut, 4 silver birch and 2 self seeded dog woods on the north and west borders!
Hi Nikki - so sorry for the delay in acknowledging your comment, been up to my eyes lately! However, you have my empathies with shade on the north and west - but this doesn't mean that it won't make a big difference with planting - I am not sure (and it's not a plug!) whether you have a copy of my book but there is a lot of info and a vast planting list in the reverse to cater for all planting situations with the best native flowers etc for wildlife and to attract the most species. OK I'll admit it. The first ever video I found of yours I was searching for highly specific information in regards to what daffodils are preferred by wildlife. The video titled was the question I had, but I was rather annoyed by how long the video was dragged on for until getting to the point. After that I clicked dislike and disappeared. Today I was searching for wildlife garden inspiration and I found your channel again. I really liked this video and ended up subscribing. This tour was fantastic and I enjoyed seeing all the species you have attracted and hearing about them. I've got to give this a thumbs up. I hope you continue to do yearly garden tours.
Thank you - appreciate this. I wish that YT could be a full-time job but working all over the country means that I often have to take the opportunity of making videos where I am and where I see things of interest so there's no chance for scripts, rehearsal etc and I am unable to cater for everyone unfortunately. Glad you stumbled on this video and it changed your mind though, welcome to the channel - remember it's free and impossible to satisfy everyone but I do my utmost to impart the knowledge I've gained over the last 17 years so that people can implement this in their own gardens :) Best wishes, Joel
It’s looking fabulous Joel. Thank you for the update I do find lots of inspiration from seeing your and garden and feel on the right track my garden is also densely planted but I definitely could add much more looking at yours. I Love the lushness and the density of the growth as it offers so much protection for wildlife. We’ve had our enormous cherry tree heavily cut today, it’s been de crowned, thinned and shaped. They did a great job but... It’s changed the woodland area of our garden so much. The heavy shade has gone it feels far less protective being so open now. But some of the plants you where sharing that I also have will enjoy the light and hopefully it will fill out a little like yours and of course the cherry will regrow over time. Great vlog.

Thank you for the update on your garden. I enjoy your video's. We don't have much butterflies as well this year, unfortunately (The Netherlands). Saw a few, from few different species, but really not much. We had snow for almost a week at the beginning of april, thought maybe thats the reason.
It never ceases to amaze me how nature can totally transform an area into a paradise! Your garden looks fab Joel, thanks for the update 👍😊

Believe me, I have HOURS of butterfly footage and really must try to make a few videos on a few species for each one, what they need, where to see them etc. Am away at end of June and hoping to get even more footage of many butterflies then, but thanks for the prompt re doing these as videos on a few species at a time. Your garden is so full of life!!! LOVE the arch rose-- but single 5 petal roses are my favorites! My Buddleia is also juuuuust starting to bud up and that's when the butterflies usually show up but I'm not seeing very many insects this year either-- many are saying that this has been a very poor year. :( My very first attempt at having swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) is blooming!!! Sooooo hoping the monarchs will visit!! You may have helped me ID a "mystery plant" that grows wild in my area often along roadways .... it looks very similar to teasel!! ( I google a lot of the plants you show to see if they are in my area!)

Love these videos of your garden, being quite small (still bigger than mine!) I find it really inspirational. I have a list of plants from this video but pleased to see that I have quite a few of the ones you mentioned already. I love the position of your bird bath, do you find the birds ever use it when you are sat in the chairs? Will you be making one of those bee and bug hotels that you put in many of the gardens you design - I hope so! Thank you for replying to all the comments especially when you are so busy, it's really appreciated. Just put in an order for red campion and verbena rigida, hoping that will do well in a pot. Sorry for going AWOL, the last few months have been a challenge and the garden/wildlife took a back seat sadly, but things are getting back on track now. My husband and I currently have Covid (luckily we are fully vaccinated)so it's a good time to catch up on missed videos and to start planning the garden for this year. Your garden videos are my favourite because you make it all seem so achievable in a small garden (although mine is smaller I think). Hi Lynn, so glad that you enjoyed this - there is also one from May a month earlier and you can see the difference. This back garden is circa 30ft x 100ft, but a section is left very wild at the very end. Very best wishes, and thank you - Joel

If you had the opportunity to move to a place with more land would you, or are you too attracted to this place? Do you think Old mans beard will be ok on clay, heard it likes chalky soils?
Hi Spencer - so sorry for the delayed reply, just trying to catch up with everyone. It would depend where in the country of course, at the moment with work all over the country I am more or less centrally-located to ensure that I can get to most places. However, I'd never dismiss a move that meant more land (affordably!). Re the Old Man's Beard, I've planted it in many gardens and it is great for all soils - Sandy, Sandy Loam, Medium Loam, Clay Loam, Clay, Limestone-based - I hope that encourages you to plant one, they make fantastic habitat for birds and quickly establish, they don't mind being cut right down in the winter either or trimmed during spring/summer if they start to "interfere" with other plants :) Best wishes, Joel
Hi Joel, what is the multi colour buddleija you have? I have a purple and white flowering one called strawberries and cream I think. I have many others too but none that sound like the same one you described with purples and oranges. Thanks.

Tree of heaven are considered invasive in the USA and most states encourage eradication of that tree. While not native to the UK are they viewed as invasive?
Hi Mark, I can understand why and of course where they get their name. It's easy to remove suckers with these but of course only easy when it's in the confines of a garden - they're not considered invasive here, although they're not encouraged of course - and these two were already mature when I moved to this property, they provide a lot of habitat so I couldn't bear to remove them. I have had at least 8 dead or dying huge bumble bees in may garden this year. Is something going on that I don’t know about?

Do you get any Mallow in your garden? We have absolutely loads popping up, some of them have gone huge, taller than myself! The bees are all over the pink flowers 👌🏽

I did have Mallow last year, and plan to have some more (if I can get space!!) as it is a great nectar source as you have said and can grow pretty tall in a short time - I'm thinking of "re-arranging" the garden in Autumn and will keep everyone updated - hope you are doing well, apologies again for the delay - best wishes, Joel

I've been finding them growing everywhere so transplanted them all along the sides of the garden due to their size. I must have at least 50 of them by now lol anything for wildlife 👌🏽
Can I ask what camera you use that can focus on the flowers so well? My camera is useless.
Do you cut back your garden in the autumn or leave everything as is for the next spring?
Hi again Garnet - I do some general tidying up in Autumn, mainly of the patio etc of course and I do cut down the meadow to an extent, but always carefully checking that a creature is not resident in any seed heads or base of stems and of course leave any teasles and knapweed to encourage the finches into the garden who love to feast on them throughout winter :) Hope that helps - best wishes, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton it does help. Thank you. I’ve contemplated putting in a wildflower meadow but the thought of having to cut it down in the fall has stopped me. It seemed to much to think about (I’m almost 80 and am looking for easy rather than lots of work I’m afraid).

It's such a wonderful little garden , only if it would be a bit more accessible , it would be the cherry on top i reckon , ofcourse you know far more than me. Why don't you have any sunflowers growing joel?
Your garden has a common American problem, lots of foliage and sparse flowering. I wonder if the unusual heat, which is becoming less unusual, is to blame. By-bye delphiniums.
