  • Daniel Ricciardo’s F1 career has, for now at least, come to an end. The Australian has enjoyed many high points in the sport, but has also faced some very difficult tests along the way. In this video, we take a look at Ricciardo’s rise and fall in F1 and explain why a decision he took in the summer of 2018 was a mistake that ultimately defined his Formula 1 career.

With the benefit of a LOT of hindsight, was Daniel Ricciardo's decision to leave Red Bull in 2018 a big mistake? Or did he make the right call in the moment?

He made the right call. 2020 was arguably his best season and also arguably, although it seemed the right move at the time, his biggest mistake was moving to McLaren.

In my opinion it wasn’t leaving Red Bull that was his biggest mistake.
    It was leaving Renault.
That Renault team was built ENTIRELY around Ricciardo and he just used the Enstone team as a stop gap until something better came along like Ferrari or McLaren.
With Ferrari going for Sainz instead of Ricciardo he wasted no time in claiming the McLaren seat. That was the turning point.

    • @F1Word
      @F1Word  7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +4

I agree with the point you've made about leaving Renault being a mistake. But leaving Red Bull in the first place (obviously) led to his move to Renault where he had to deal with their reported nonsense behind the scenes. That then led to him leaving for McLaren where he got dropped and then on to AlphaTauri/VCARB. So it was still the Red Bull exit that defined his career and was a massive mistake. That Red Bull exit triggered it all.
That said, as I mentioned in the video, leaving made sense at the time given what was going on around him. This is ALL with the benefit of a lot of hindsight.

And to take it even further, if only he performed well at Mclaren and got to keep his seat...where could he be now in 2024? Daniel's career is a perfect example of a person with incredible talent but blinded by ego and impatience. He had 3 BIG chances with 3 BIG teams (extremely rare nowadays), and he managed to ruin them all by himself.
I feel really sad and sorry for him for leaving F1 the way he did, but at the same time, not so much...after thinking of his career in hindsight and considering he was the very author of his own bad ending.

Honestly, it's hard to argue that Ricciardo made any bad moves on paper, only that he couldn't make them work. He left Red Bull for a monster salary at Renault, then left that team while his stock was at its peak to take another monster salary and gigantic 3 year deal at McLaren. The only reasons those moves were seen as questionable was due to McLaren's form in 2022 relative to Renault, as well as the beating he took from Norris, but the Norris issue was purely down to his own driving ability.
If RIcciardo had been able to adapt better to the 2022 McLaren (and the 2021 McLaren as well, let's not forget that he also struggled pre-ground effect cars), then he wouldn't have had his contract cut short, and would be sitting in the 2nd best car come the end of 2023, and likely could have gotten another year driving the cream of the crop McLaren car in 2024.
He made all of the right moves on paper, he just couldn't drive well enough, and it's clear from his RB stint that it wasn't solely down to the McLaren cars themselves. Ultimately in this sport it's adapt or die, and its that quality that truly seperates the greats from the good.

Sucks that this move derailed a good career but he wasn’t as good as rose tinted fans will make out. Do not mistake me he was excellent and had a few performances any driver would be proud of but I’ve seen a lot of people saying he’s a wdc calibre driver which I highly doubt he would ever get close. I will miss him and it’s a shame that his confidence was clearly shot by the time he got to McLaren

Agree with pretty much everything you said. I do recall him being considered a potential 'future WDC' by many in his time with Red Bull, though - but we'll now never know for sure if that was the case.

@@F1Word he’s got talent but I mean more that in his prime you still had Hamilton Vettel and max coming up in the three dominant cars so just feel like the landscape of f1 wasn’t there for him sadly. In a grid without 3 of arguably top 5-10 drivers of all time he gets a look in he’s just not in that conversation which is unfortunate

Disagree, from 2014-2017 he was 100% at the level of a WDC contender, Red Bull just never gave him the car

Having met Ricardo I can tell you the guy is a gem of a person. He doesn’t do toxicity, him leaving Red Bull was something he had to do for his soul the same way he left McLaren.

Sadly, I've never had the chance to meet him. However, I have no doubt whatsoever that he is - as you put it - a "gem of a person!" :)

He didn't leave McLaren, they caned him.

His fans does toxicity though. Attacking Lawson, Yuki, Perez.. anyone even though they aren't management making the decisions and had nothing to do with his performance and firing. It's gross. Even taking shots at Stroll, totally nothing to do with this, emotionally unstable rabid fans.
