Really enjoy your demos. If you had to choose between just the IR-J or the Lion 68 straight to an FRFR with a primary focus on nailing Angus Young tones, which one would you recommend? I see channel 1 on the IR-J sold as a plexi, but does it really sound/feel like a real superlead plexi?
I think, like all of Dave's pedals and amps (other than the Plex amp), the IRJ has been my favorite unit and I prefer it to the Lion. The Lion is a more authentic sounding and feeling superlead sound but you forego some flexibility that Dave's "IR" pedals have such as 2 switchable channels, midi and the ability to use your own IR's Although channel 1 of the IR-J doesn't really sound all that similar to the Lion, they both are going for the same vibe with the old plexi clean/crunch sound. The lead channel on the IR-J is based on a modded JCM800 so it's got much more gain, more bite and clarity and a tighter sound but in the low gain setting, you can still pull it back and get a nice fat smooth classic marshall mid-gain sound. The IR-X is more of a tame overall sound and based on a modded plexi and the IR-D is basically two JTM45 style circuits. All 3 IR pedals are great but the IR-J seems to be the one capable of covering the most ground from cleans, nice crunch and mid gain sounds to a nice clean tight higher gain sound. The Lion, although mostly a 1 trick pony, is a GREAT sound but a lot more limited (and less expensive) If it were me and I didn't have anything, I'd 100% grab an IR-J.
Good stuff! I'm curious, going into the power station, are you routing from the IRJ's balanced out, or from the FX send? In the ir-j manual, it recommends going out of the FX send if you are going into an external power amp. Wondering if you tried both, and how much difference there is. Thanks for another great demo!

Great video! I ordered this and wanting to power it up my my fryette ps1 and 4x12 cab. Can I run a line out to foh with ir's AND run through my cab at same time?
Not really. You would need to split the signal first running one signal into an external power amp and cabinet and the other signal into singing like an inexpensive IR loader and send that to the PA. The Friedman pedals are really only designed to run one way or the other. The good news though is that you can grab something like the Sonicake IR loader and use that for a pretty good cheap companion pedal. If it were me though, I’d just use an FRFR with the pedal and split the main Friedman output into a pair of signals to the frfr and PA. It’s why I really like the UA DelVerb. It does that split perfectly but the NUX Atlantic is a cheaper alternative to achieve the same result.
Can you walk through the QC cortex block building with the IR J? I am struggling figuring out how to implement my IR D with my QC. ideally want to be able to use the IR D for most of my amp tones but have the option to use other amp captures when I want to....
The way I did it was disable the IR on the friedman pedal by holding down footswitch 1 for about 5 seconds (also can be toggled off in the software if you have the pedal connected to you computer) and then just run the main output from the friedman into an input on the QC. On the QC, one way to juggle multiple sources would be to connect the friedman pedal in one of the QC effects loops. Send from QC loop output into the input of the friedman and then out the main friedman output into the QC loop return. Setup the signal path starting with the guitar going into the main input 1 (assuming you use that for your instrument) and then add an FX loop block for the friedman pedal. Assign that loop block to one of the footswitches. Setup any other amp models or captures, etc in the signal chain and to facilitate switching from one to the other, you would assign the amp block or capture block to the SAME footswitch that you assigned to the fx loop. Make sure that either the loop block or the amp sim/capture block is disabled. This means that when you hit the footswitch, it will turn whichever block is off ON and whichever block is on, it will turn it OFF so it flips back and fourth between the two sources. Setup whatever IR or cab sim block you want to use and effects and stuff like that and you should be good. You could even use two different IR or cab blocks so one is active for the friedman pedal and the other active for the amp sim block or amp capture block. You'd just assign those to that same switch as the other blocks so that they too switch on/off accordingly.
@@Sonicblue1922 I tested it during sound check at last night's show just straight into the PA and my FRFR and it was REALLY good. I gigged with a 5153 that I'm going to be reviewing this week and that was a killer amp on stage but the IRJ was right there with it in terms of delivering a great stage sound through our system.
I have a simple question no one seems to have an answer. Can I take the output of the Friedman and run it straight into a Studio type power amp without a board or in effect another preamp between the Friedman and the power amp.
Absolutely. It's just a tube preamp in a pedal at the end of the day. What makes it nice is that it has the built in speaker IR's you can use to eliminate the need to have a dedicated speaker sim or IR loader pedal. In my video review of the IR-D, I ran the unit with the (IR disabled) into my Fryette power station and then to a speaker cab. Sounded awesome.
My ir-j arrived. My set up. Powerstation-8ohm 2x12 cab and jel. Jel send to ps line in? I'm using your jel settings and the sound is not quite there. Do I need to put the ps vol on full blast😂? Thanks
Have you connected to the software and messed with the bright, thump and low pass controls? They make a big impact. Also if you haven’t got the PS attenuating itself to let you use the two small switches, try that to get more tone shaping options.
