Why Darvin Ham Was Fired & What Comes Next? Who Could Replace Him for the Los Angeles Lakers?

  • The inevitable just became reality. On Friday, the Los Angeles Lakers announced that Darvin Ham has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Lakers. It's no surprise that Ham is out because all signs pointed in this direction, but it's actually pretty shocking that Ham, after doing such a good job building buy-in as a rookie coach with LeBron James, Anthony Davis, D'Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, and Rui Hachimura, saw it all go to pot during his second year. Increasingly, Ham found his decisions being questioned by players, to say nothing of fans and, reportedly, the front office, and kept refusing to take public accountability for whatever struggles. You can't do that in a season that didn't live up to expectations, which explains in part why Ham is out.
Still, nobody can honestly say ALL of the problems were the coach. The roster isn't perfect, even if the oodles of supporting players who were injured stayed healthy. LeBron requires season-long maintenance. And there aren't many obvious choices to replace Ham. Lot of pressure on Rob Pelinka to get this right.
We shall see what comes next.
    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: The Lakers fire Darvin Ham. How did it go so bad so quickly?
SEGMENT 2: More on why it went bad... but also why it wasn't all Darvin's fault.
SEGMENT 3: Who should replace Darvin? The choices aren't obvious.

Here’s my dark horse choice, Coach K, bring him out of retirement for Lebron’s 3 year extension. Lebron loves Coach K. The Lakers need to focus on squeezing as much juice out of this team over the next 3 years as possible and they need someone that Lebron respects. Swing big Baby! And let JJ be his lead assistant. When Lebron and Coach K retire, JJ can take over to lead the next phase of the Lakers with some sideline experience

I love the people saying they want a coach like Mike Malone, He would have been fired after his first 2 seasons as well with the Lakers. He went 33-49, 40-42 his first 2 seasons at Denver but was allowed to develop as a coach. Now I'm not saying they should have kept Pockets but hire someone you can still believe in when S*&t hits the fan. LBJ is not a max contract player anymore as well, he should be ideally the 3rd best player on a Championship quality team, still elite when he wants to be but during the regular season he roll at about 60% effort most of the time and his outsized contract leaves you money for only marginal players. My worry is the Names may change next season but the story will remain the same.

What are you talking about, Vanderbilt missed the entire season and that made a huge difference along with Gabe Vincent missing the entire season. Vincent wasn't ready to play in the playoffs. Ham was playing with a short deck. Two key players out all season. No real back up Center (that's on the front office). Ham is a scapegoat. When are the Lakers going to stick with a coach. Changing coaches every two years is not a formula for success. But, I guess Lebron and Jeanie are getting rich.

People like Rob Pelinka, Jenny Buss, and the awful management of the Laker Organization, No, let's fire the coach, having lived in So Cal most of my 74 years, the Lakers went from world beaters to just an ordinary team, kind of like the Clippers!!!!

    AK summarizes it quite well...
The primary reason Ham got fired was making the cardinal sin of playing favouritism while deploying rotations... Without a modicum of rationale. ... Lost the locker room totally. The younger players weren't given opportunity to grow and contribute. Max Christie's lack of playing time was simply mind boggling.
Cearly his Xs and Os awareness and in game adjustments were piss poor. He lost LeBron and AD there....
And final nail in the coffin, was lack of accountability while communicating with team or media.....

I want a coach who knows exactly what he wants to do when something on the court changes and acts quickly enough to do it. Mike Malone sees something he doesn’t like and immediately calls a timeout to adjust and fix it while ham never seemed to know what he wanted to do. We need a coach with a clear plan that player will buy into and clear direction not someone who experiments with all wing lineups and can’t choose a path

I don't think we're gonna find a 3rd star. Certainly not without getting fleeced. It'd be great if we drafted 3 high IQ rookies that contributed. As an LA transplant living in Orlando, I can confirm that there are smaller market teams that hate the Lakers for "buying" championships (especially if we took the 3rd star from their team), so I doubt we will get a fair deal for a bigger name. If we don't draft well, Rob will be on the block.

While they got to the WCF 2 years ago, Darvin squandered the key ingredient for improvement that Pelinka gave him -- continuity. He installed a new offense virtually on the fly and then made some critical mistakes with rotations that appeared to be coming from his favoritism of certain role players that was not warranted. But, the final straw was he got sideways with AD and threw the players under the bus. No Lakers coach has the runway to make those mistakes. Just my opinion.

Lakers had multiple opportunities to win it at the last seconds but......
    1. Often lebron where nowhere to be found during 4th quarter. He attempted 2 shos in 4th at game 2. And missed a wide open 3 to win in one of the games
    2. Reeves had a wide open look on 3 and missed.
    3. AD was not inposing enough on 4th quarter.
...and the coaching staff are being fired because of the above? BS! Lakers should let go of GM Lebron first of all

How is he “listening to the noise” when he is being asked questions about his coaching decisions lmao . What gets me is nobody has yet shown what coaching decisions he failed that would have won the Lakers more games or get further in the playoffs. That roster just ain’t better than the Nuggets lol. He had guys underperforming in clutch moments or throughout games, guys not running back on turnovers or in transition, guys not healthy, guys turning the ball over in clutch moments and players with weak mindsets when they blame refs but not themselves for blowing a 20 Pt lead in the playoffs. Just saying we going into 8 years with about to be now 4 head coaches, when are we gonna say maybe it’s about the two players who you have built the team around that seems like it’s just not working bc they are the only common denominators.

    • @LockedOnLakers
      @LockedOnLakers  หลายเดือนก่อน

There's a lot here, so I'll try to address as much as possible. Ham was clearly listening to the noise because, in the quote I mentioned, he expressed annoyance at his rotations being questioned. That's too specific (and accurate) for a random coincidence. Combined with the "starter (bleeping) the bed" comment later, it comes off as extremely defensive. It's a bad look for Darvin after a season where he's rarely, if ever, also said "I need to be better, too."
I don't disagree that Darvin wasn't "the reason" the Lakers didn't beat Denver, which is why I never said so. I do think Darvin could have been better (as could, as you rightly note, the players), and that some decisions were costly, but in the end, Denver won because they're the better team. IMO, losing to Denver shouldn't be the reason Darvin got fired. But as I explained, I don't think it's so much about the playoff exit as a culmination of events leading up to it, which I laid out.
You are correct that the Lakers have become a revolving door at coach, and it's a problem. It reflects quite badly on the front office, who damn well should be on big-time notice, too. But that doesn't change the fact that the relationship between Darvin and the players has grown untenable. If you wanna make the argument that Pelinka should be fired, have at it. I've long said Jeanie could do better. But a coaching change is still necessary. Both things can be true at once.
And finally, you may be correct about the LeBron/AD window being shut, but as we've discussed in previous shows, unless you're gonna truly blow up the roster and rebuild from the ground up (a path this organization, for better or worse, is never inclined to take), then you're pot-committed to that duo at this point. There's really no viable "option C."
      Appreciate you watching.
      AK

I know you’re probably not going to read this, but There’s blatant hypocrisy from lakers fans regarding Darvin Ham and his “refundable to except responsibility” vs players refusing to accept accountability as well.
Did we not all watch the lakers after their final loss to the nuggets blame their failed season on injuries? Besides Austin Reaves, which lakers said that they weren’t good enough or they could’ve been better?
So when Lebron and the rest of the player blame injuries, we ignore it, yet we call for Ham to be fired immediately for doing the same thing.
This is why I hope Lebron gets to pick the coach and roster next year. That way, there’s no excuse for him when the lakers lose in the first round again.
But of course, his team and/or Klutch sports is going to leak to the media that the coach has lost the locker room and the delusional lakers fans will once again blame the coach. Then, we will be looking at 8 coaches fired In 14 years this time next year.

Lakers should've given Ham one more year. Unfortunately, the Lakers got the worst possible draw playing the defending champs in the first round...but what if they had gotten OKC instead? They probably would've won that series and he would've likely kept his job. Yeah, he made a few boneheaded coaching decisions vs Nuggs, but is it Ham's fault that neither Rui or DLo even bothered showing up vs. Denver?? Look, Mike Malone was awful his first few years and many in Denver wanted him gone after 2019 season. But their ownership stayed patient, believed he'd eventually turn things around and stuck with him... The Lakers need to stop letting LeBron run coaches out of town. He's had five coaches in his last ten years... what does that tell you?? Lebron is the GOAT alright...the GOAT at quickly getting coaches fired.

The Lakers' biggest problem is Rob Pelinka. He is totally clueless as GM. He took a championship team and made them a play in team at best. Even Magic tried to advise Jeannie about it.

  • @dmac93065
    @dmac93065 หลายเดือนก่อน

I hope LeBron leaves so fans can't blame him for the organization's dysfunction.
Jeanie may not have technically been in charge when Walton was hired, but she allegedly thought Walton was a genius and was very resistant to firing him.
The organization completely disrespected Frank Vogel and lost a chance to interview Quin Synder as a result. The Lakers still disrespect AD by ignoring his repeated requests to not play center full-time because Jeanie wants to market a high scoring 5-out team over one that can win on defense.
Plus, we all know why Pelinka survives; he's a puppet who does as he'stold and shields Jeanie from accountability. Jeanie and her friends make personnel decisions for the Lakers. Rob simply negotiates the deals. Pelinka has no autonomy. In fact, Kurt and Linda Rambis wield more power within the Lakers organization than does the team's so-called executive. When reporters tried calling this out a couple of years ago, Jeanie weaponized being a woman and made it seem as if gender-bias was the reason anyone questioned how she runs the team.
