Converting a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue (DRRI) to Handwired Blackface AB763 | Part 1

  • I'm gathering parts to completely overhaul my used DRRI from Guitar Center to be a "restomod" Fender Deluxe Reverb. The plan is to move the filter supply inside the amp (inspiration from Alessandro) and then use modern components to achieve an extremely low noise floor while maintaining the character of a vintage '65 Deluxe Reverb. I was never happy with my DRRI and I always thought it was harsh sounding and didn't have much headroom. Follow along as I rebuild this amp up! This would be a fantastic project for anyone getting into amp building so I'll share my tips and tricks along the way! As always, I'll share my layout with modifications along the way.
    PDF of my layout and DIYLC files can be found github.com/colganr/fender-del...
    List of tasteful modifications that I'm implementing that allows me to maintain an honest '65 vibrato channel circuit, but with additional tricks. I learned a lot of these tricks from comments on my TH-cam channel as well as from Rob Robinette's website.
    * NOR channel tone stack will be a Fender Custom Shop Dual Professional stack
    * Polyester Orange Drop capacitors - (Original '65 used polyester, the DRRI uses polypropylene blahh)
    * Metal film resistors anywhere that's going to ground as well as RN70 plate load resistors
    * Mogami coax internal wiring for sensitive signal areas
    * Silver Mica caps replace all ceramic caps
    * Move the power supply from the dog house to inside the amplifier
    * NOR channel added reverb
    * Wirewound power supply resistors for the lowest thermal noise floor
    * VIB/NOR channel with push/pull volume pots for bright cap
    * Mid pots added in place of Input 2 on both channels
    * Alembic style preamp out so I can run the preamp into another power amp (like my SSS) 😎 Jerry Garcia style mod
    * Vibrato disconnect switch like SRV's Vibroverb 50KRA with switch www.tedweber.com/wp503ras

    This is awesome! I can’t wait to see it.
    Thanks for all the details and mention of sources. I’m going to look into those Hoffman boards for a Twin Reverb project I have.

    great plan! I have a '76 Deluxe Reverb that I got back in '95. I replaced all the Electrolytics a couple years ago with the F&T kit and it dropped the noise floor way down and really woke up the amp! ...and hear this, back in the day I actually owned a McIntosh MC2300 Solid State Power amp. It was LOUD! for sure! sad i got rid of it too :(

      Very cool to hear!! Those MC2300 are rare now (and expensive) it seems! I'm sad for you getting rid of it! Glad you like a Deluxe Reverb and I'm excited to hear mine the right way this time. What speaker is in yours?

      @@TheToneGeek I have used a Cannabis Rex for many years, I tried a few others ...the GB128 sounds great, the JS-1250 is a little shrill, and currently I have a Scumback M75 LD(100W) in it. It's very nice indeed, but that speaker will join a soon to arrive H75 LD and go into a 2 x 12" oval port cabinet to be used with my Ceriatone FM50 ME.

    Hey man, put a pot in the back to make a variable neg feedback and it will be excellent. Along with the mid pot you want to use .Dumble went after black face bass mans in the early days!

    Do you do amp mods for other people? What would you suggest to get a deluxe reverb closer to the two rock clean tone? Not any two rock model, but that general overall full sound that spans the lineup of two rocks

    Good idea. I have built up many turret board amps and have a DRRI and want to do it to this amp. Question: Does the Hoffman board have the holes for the screws that match the DRRI chassis? I have only used Hoffman boards and they are great.

    • @TheToneGeek
      @TheToneGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The Hoffman boards do not appear to have the holes for drri chassis. I ended up drilling both at the same time before I started populating the board. It laid practically flat on the chassis for a solid hole that lines up

    Nice job ! I found out about the Allesandro handwired chassis retro fit '65 Fender DRRI's, after I picked up the '64 Custom Deluxe HW a couple years ago..I probably would have seriously considered getting the Allesandro Deluxe ....I did however get one of his GA-SA64 replacement speakers ..

    I would love to see you take on a brownface- You have a special gift when it comes to this stuff and for whatever reason- the harmonic tremolo of the larger 6L6 brownfaces has not been given its due here on youtube (not really the power tube bias wiggle tremolos of the smaller brownfaces either).

    The TONE GEEK,
    if you remove the Choke in the power supply what does this do to the AC ripple?
    can this add harmonics and modulate the power tubes from the AC ripple signal?

    • @TheToneGeek
      @TheToneGeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never looked into that. The choke is there to supply steady amperage so I'd imagine there is side effects from a touch response without a choke. I never saw a design without a choke.. have you?

    • @billwilliams6338
      @billwilliams6338 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheToneGeek yes some fender & marshall amps don't use a choke. Another question is when you remove the normal channels first preamp tube, the vibrato channels preamp will have more output voltage and it changes the impedance and TONE, any reasons why? Tubes have very high impedance and aren't suppose to load down the parallel circuit. Any reasons why this changes the TONE of the vibrato channels preamp from removing the unused the first tube from the normal channels amp? its changes the impedance and frequency response techs have told me.

    • @TheToneGeek
      @TheToneGeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billwilliams6338 thank you for the insight and Marshall and Fender not using a choke occasionally on some models. The tube itself requires power from the supply to make it work. By removing the tube, it's less power draw on the supply. Since v1 and v2 share the same power source, removing v1 raises the voltage (gain) of v2 which changes the characteristics of the tone on the Vibrato channel. The impedance you refer to is for the signal, but this tone change relates to gain.

    • @billwilliams6338
      @billwilliams6338 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheToneGeekyes V2 "Plate" voltage raises higher which gives you more gain but also since v1 & v2 "shared" output impedance has changed since is only V2 output impedance now that the phase inverter circuit sees? another question if you increased the B+ voltage to +600volts would this increase or decrease the AC ripple? the power tubes would draw less or more current if the B+ voltage is +600volts instead of normal operating at B+450vdc?

    I don't know how much effect on tone the outer layer of the caps have. It has nothing to do with the circuit as far as I know but hey I've been wrong many times before!
