    Tested Both the 65 and the 68. Both are great Amps, but the 68 has a warmer tone and access to the Reverb/Tremelo across both channels gives the 68 a distinct advantage in my opinion.

    I had both amps for a while . When A & B ing them I found the Blackface had a darker and warmer tone . Silver face has a bit more clarity with the Highs and still a crisp bottom . Both were great amps and it was a tough choice but I'm sticking with the Silverface for now.

      I bought the 68 and didn't even realize there was a 65 when I bought it. The only thing off-putting to me is that low-level hum that's always there when you turn down the guitar. But the sound of the amp as a whole is great!

  • @davidrobson9965
    @davidrobson9965 9 ปีที่แล้ว +60

    I tested both these amps at my local music shop to see what I could replace my Hot Rod Deville with. The '65 is very bright and does have more clean headroom, but the '68 has a definite advantage over the '65 for a few reasons. The Custom channel is fatter, warmer and aligns so well with pedals and makes a single coil guitar like a Strat or Tele sound rich and delicious. The availability of Tremelo and Reverb across both channels is also a great improvement on the '65 where most players ignore one channel almost completely and simply use the Vibrato channel. Finally, the Celestion speaker is a really nice departure from the alnico Jensen. It imparts a lot more warmth and the bass response is much better. After demoing the '65 I plugged into the '68 and it was no contest. I have had the '68 Custom for about 12 months now and the speaker has broken in beautifully. Make no mistake. This is one of the best Fender amps of the last decade. Buy it!!!

      +David Robson Some people are saying that the 68 reissue silverface amps have problems, are made in Mexico, etc., and that it's much safer to either buy a vintage 70's silverface or stick tot he USA made reissues? I'm tempted by this silverface 68 deluxe reverb reissue shown in the video , and the price is lower than the 65. What do you think?

    • @davidrobson9965
      @davidrobson9965 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +George London I've had the amp for almost 2 years and it has exhibited no issues at all. Very pleased with it in all aspects. The vintage channel has a bit more clean headroom than the custom channel but I find it fulfils all my needs!

      Very interesting and more difference in tone than I expected. Obviously the silver has the advantage when it comes to the channels setup. But the speaker gives the blackface so much more clarity in sound. I’d have to go for the blackface.

    Both winners. The 68 will win for those looking for warmer tone and nice crunch. The 65 DRRI will win for those who want headroom and brighter tone. All are arguing which one is better, but the only difference is speaker on channel 2 . So , in amp design , the difference is in channel 1. 65 is reissue of originals with normal 1. channel without reverb ,and 68 custom is with bassman circuit with reverb on. If you sit on channel 2 all the time on 65 reissue, there is no brainer to get 68 and put what ever speaker you prefer , and have an extra option with normal 1. channel bassman type.

    And VibroKings for dream rig. Aaaah need a roadie for those. Waddy Watchell played2 Vibro kings weekly while us poor regular folk played the house 1/2 stack. A Crate Red Voodoo. Fun Times at the Joint in Beverly Hills Mondays. Also Petie's Reseda rock jam had Fender Blues Jr's being the guest jammers' top choice. Master Teacher Dan Sindel brought out Princetons for70's Stones jams. Oooooh! Fenders =fun.

    I've got a Strat body identical to that, I did the finish myself and also made the body from templates off my '61, and now I feel better about not going more opaque. And it's funny I intend to switch the pickguard from 50's style white with gold hardware to green with nickle like that one because mine has a BRW slab board neck (switch to the '59 - '62 theme). Enough sidetracking, I think the re-issues suck compared to the vintage originals, don't know why I'm here.

    I played the 65 at Guitar Center for a while. The tone was blowing my friend and I away. The price tag scared me away. I guess Fender knows what it will sell for, but my "high" guess would have been something like $850. I would be happy paying $600-700. $850 would seem a little high, but $1100 seems like they are pushing it a bit. I assume its an MDF cab with PCB construction. The original amps are finger jointed pine with point to point wiring.

    • @christyrpak4378
      @christyrpak4378 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Chris Mann -True, but in 1968, the DR cost $250. Using an inflation calculator, that comes to about $1,900 in today's dollars. With point to point, you get what you pay for.

    Sounds like the amp is a bit too noisy with the single coils. I love the fact that these amps are under 50 lbs. My Bad Cat Hot Cat sounds better than either amp but it weighs 88 lbs. AND... They say 22 watts. A normal 6V6 gives 12 watt in class A, those work in push pull mode.
      To get 11 watt out of each tube you need to bias them cooking hot.
      Only TAD and JJ have 14 watt 6V6 tubes, and even then you need to bias them more then 70%.
      Also the Power transformer will be very very hot.

    I think I have a pretty good awareness of gear and amp prices and designs. I think these amps are overpriced at least $100 compared to other amps. These are mass produced PCB amps. They sound good, but I think you're paying probably $200+ for the novelty of having a reissue.

    Man that mic is cliping bad, I think the amp probably sounds pretty nice but it's hard to tell with all the clipping on your mic preamp!

      @eleanmendoza 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** No it's the mic. I'm listening on a late 2014 MacBook Pro and the there is definitely clipping. At first I thought the speaker on that 68 was bad, until I realized it was the mic.

      Yes, the recording is clipping. Technically the mic isn't clipping, unless that particular mic can handle the SPL coming into it, but it looks like Shure 57, which can easily handle either of those amps speakers volume levels. If the mic is running into the camera's mic input that's likely where the problem is as it probably can't handle the signal level.
      But I agree it would sound even better if the recording was done better. Both of those amps have great natural over drive tones and the 68 breaks up sooner.
      I tried both over and over and decided the 68 CDR was for me. It has a warmer tone and it has 2 different tone stacks so it's a real 2 channel amp whereas the 65 is one channel repeated with one of them having reverb and tremolo. On the 68 both channels have reverb and tremolo along with different tone stacks.
      68 has "custom" and "vintage" channels. The custom is based on the Fender bassman tone stack and the vintage is the same as the 65 except the bright cap is removed thus giving it a warmer tone.
      Which one is better is all about personal taste and wants. Either one is a GREAT sounding amp.

      I just listened to this recording again at my work computer, which I use for video editing and audio, through M-Audio BX5 audio monitors, and the recording of course sounds a good bit better than my original listening on decent but not really good Asus laptop speakers. These real audio monitors range and clarity are vastly greater than any laptop speakers.
      Still, at times there is a hint of clipping/distortion that does not sound like it's from the amps. But it's so minor as to not be worth discussing as it's quite transient.
      In the days of analogue/analog recording we would try to run as close to 0db as we could to get max level above the noise floor before clipping, and if and when it did clip the distortion was fuzzy but not ugly unless of course one went way too far. So I, and likely most, shot for around -3db with peaks at 0 and no higher. With digital that has changed. Digital does not like anything above it's maximum or it gets really ugly really fast. Trent Reznor came to fame exploiting digital's limits. :)
      Now I shoot for -6db as my average and try not to get anywhere near 0db on the recording. Luckily, with digital we can run lower as the noise floor is so much lower as well.
      BTW, I've had record levels showing good, below clipping, yet still hear some transient unwanted distortion/clipping. It can come from the input for the mic set too hot. Clipping can occur right there even though that mics channel sent to record may show the recording as being at optimal level, the record level is showing the level of the recorded signal but not the level at the input to the channel. Meaning, the channel input can be clipping occasionally even while the record level shows optimal. I'm not saying that's what happened here, just wanted to point that out to those new to recording. Still, great job on the video giving us a side by side comparison of the tonal differences between these 2 great amps.
      To answer your question, I've only run these amps to around 7 not 10. The 65 sings with power tube distortion by 7. The 68 sings with it's distortion just a tad sooner.
      For example, where the 65 starts to break around 5, the 68 does so around 4, and that's all by Fender's design as they intended it to be that way.

    • @alexschrodt
      @alexschrodt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      omfg51 yes, technically you are correct, but it is referred to as vibrato in the video because fender has always called the tremolo enabled channel the “vibrato” channel… This has caused confusion between the two effects for decades, Of course…

      +frank Unfortunately the 68 Silverface was the same circuit as the 65 back when, and is on the vintage channel as well on these RI. They didn't tweak it until later 69 and 70. And, that's if that mattered with these RIs, which it really doesn't. Personally, on the bridge, cranked, particularly on the Custom channel, 68 all the way.

    デラックスリバーブはロックギターの音の基本だね。歪んでもジュルジュルした倍音も同時に増えて表現力が増す。6V6のプッシュプルが、そのビーム菅の根本的な素性を現わし出して、ジューシーで中域のノビのある、何とも言えぬトーンを生み出す。4発スピーカーの二段積み?それは、ロックギターのビジュアル的な迫力を創造していただけなんだ。今のようにPAが進化すると、もう必要はない!ギターアンプの音がそれ自体で指向性が強く、遠くまでカバーする必要はない。でも、ギタリストの後ろに巨大なアンプが立ってないと、カッコ悪いじゃん?って見かけだけのイメージが、現在も亡霊のようにつきまとっていると思うね。
