@10:05 That is the way it is supposed to be, it is a safety feature with lathes that have the single-lever power feed control so you don't accidentally crash the machine. More expensive lathes often have one lever for the carriage and one for the cross slide, so it is not an issue. Some older lathes you don't have to reverse, but are much easier to crash if you aren't careful. It is additionally less complex and therefore cheaper to make it the "safer" way. @10:57 Make sure to maintain the spindle brake pad, some lathes it is just cork, and needs one drop of oil per day of use. It can be a pain to replace, and deteriorates rapidly if not maintained. The Mori-Seiki lathes are very good, you will not want to give that one up unless you come across something like a Monarch.
To be honest, the new lathe sounds really quiet and dammm that ground level precision... So perfect. You sure will turn that thing into a masterpiece xD

That chuck cleaned up very well! And that lathe, even though you can see it has done work in its life, is in great shape. My brand-new lathe, made in a place just North of your country, had more backlash out of the box when I bought it 5 years ago!
As much as I love my lathe, I have some serious envy of your new purchase. That Mori is in remarkably good condition. I'm glad that it's in the hands of someone as skilled as you are.

@ I have large room in the house right next to the shop that I walk thru from the kitchen to the shop. We don't really use it. Over time I have slowly started putting random things, mostly material (wood) in there to get it out of the shop. One day my wife will notice and I'll have a big problem! Good luck Bro!
Brilliant! I don't know very much, but the new lathe seems very well designed and built. And I was suprised that you scraped off most of the rust before the evaporust; it worked so good! Most people seem to just throw the parts in dirty, and it doesn't work as well. It's a simple thing, but... very nice!
Nice lathe you ended up with there. Not always fun to walk away from a machine, but there's always something better down the road. Good find! Make a small Murphy bed, hang it on the wall..... good to go!
That's a really nice lathe. You can hang a hammock in the corner and sleep over the lathe. No one could steal your tools. Or maybe build a bedroom over the shop.
I like the new lathe. Both my Clausing and Logan have that same issue with the cross slide vs carriage directions needing to be reversed to go in the most common directions.

Ikegai lathes are very good - I almost bought the A20 toolroom lathe. We don't see many Japanese lathes in the UK. I have a 1964 Colchester Triumph Roundhead lathe. It doesn't look very pretty but there is almoszt no wear and it runs like a new machine. 7.5" centre height and will turn 24" in the gap - or 60cm! Pretty big. Only drawback top speed is only 1000rpm - not so good for small stuff with carbide tooling.
Congratulations! I'm not too sure how old that machine is, but whoever ran it before you was very experienced, cared about maintaining the obvious points, or the darn thing was just a dust collector for its life. I didn't see any obvious dents, dings deformations on the cross slide, gear changes and handle movements appeared smooth with clicks and no clunks or grinding, and mostly factory fresh backlash. ( True backlash needs checked in a different manner ) DMG MORI has a long tradition of really going the extra mile with their machines and are solid, reliable and a joy to use. You have a true jewel there and I can't think of anyone else better to own/operate that machine. (Outside of myself of course!) Oh, and one more thing, considering the attachments I see, that machine was designed for high production. You could make a lot of money with it. A lot of hard work tho.
I just got done commenting on you last video and then saw this one. I'm glad you were able to get a good lathe again, and from what you showed that does indeed look like it is in great shape. I really like the Hydraulic brake; that stops sooo fast! I have a new PM1440bv with the VFD inverter drive and it uses the inverter for braking. I love the inverter for the variable drive, but the braking action is so slow.
I feel like the lathe will experience a renaissance in your hands! And that it will help you get a new room too 😉! I look forward to a future restoration.
Apart from the rust and grime collecting over the years and the enormous backlash, this old lathe looks pristine. With some surface scraping on the slide carriage flats (i don't know what they're called in english) it will be a hell of a good lathe. Fellow machinist here; love your videos. You're doing great
Evaporust is great, used it to restore a little Hobbymatt lathe i have. One thing, i didn’t see you oil over the chuck. Anything i diddnt soak in oil/WD40 went rusty very quickly after. New lathe looks great. Love the “heart break” pictures of the old one.

Happy to see your hand has healed up nicely, and great job on the chuck restoration, very well done. The new lathe looks like it's in pretty good shape, the ways look nice, clean and true. It's a bit rough looking but what hard working machine room tool doesn't look like it''s been through a hard days work? Little elbow grease some time and lots of scraping and scrubbing and it will look like your old lathe in no time. With less (was a bit hard to see) than not even a tenth out on the spindle , you will have yourself a good machine once you dress it up a bit. Well done, stay safe and protect your hands! Cheers!

Nothing creepy about it, it’s just a natural way of feeling safe while the weather is crap. Same as snuggling up in a nice warm bed when it’s miserable outside.

LOL! re morri: 1. don't feel too bad, just you pimp it up and soon enough you will sell it for an 500 mm x 8500 mm lathe 2. once that 8.5 m bed late goes in, i foresee your whole family sleeping on that bed, and the kitchen then goes shopified too... keep up the good work (excellent videos and editing BTW)

I have a Moriseiki MR2000G, it was looking really bad and almost all the paint stripped etc. But the ways looked perfect, and that's why I bought it. And partially for the toolpost with 15 holders. The ways both x and z are lubricated automatically so as long as you have oil in the reservoir and don't use it as a cylindrical grinder, the hard ways will have very long lifespan

I have a Moriseiki MR2000G, it was looking really bad and almost all the paint stripped etc. But the ways looked perfect, and that's why I bought it. And partially for the toolpost with 15 holders. The ways both x and z are lubricated automatically so as long as you have oil in the reservoir and don't use it as a cylindrical grinder, the hard ways will have very long lifespan
