Decided to make a few mug rugs for my lunch ladies with a mug.......these are perfect! You won't believe this, but I've made these same little cuties as coasters for wine glasses, the stem bottom fits right into the openings and stays put as you carry it around to set it down.......who knew, two ideas, one cute project! Ive made these for years....you can do it with any size square, even 10" and make a hot pad. Also, with the 5" squares you can fold them into triagles and layer them in the same way! FUN! This is an old, old pattern.
Just a quick update... I continue to follow you,and have made most everything you 'e done tutorials on. You never cease to bring a smile to my face and your teaching style fits me perfectly. I occasionally pop a chocolate or two while zipping up your pouches. Everyone I know has a set of mug rugs😜

Hi! I love this version. What is the fusible batting product you are using? It appears to fuse on both sides. I can only find fusible on one side. Tanks!

I am a recently retired CNA and used to being busy. I am also new at sewing with a new sewing machine (Singer 1342). This is a wonderful housewarming and gift idea and looks like I will have a fun project to occupy my mind and be productive. I saw this video shortly after it was published and saved it to my favorites and never made any because I worked 2 jobs back then and then my computer bombed but, now I have a new lap top and only one job and enough fabric to open up my own shop due to my grandmother's fabric store closing - I asked for all the fat quarter pieces and remnants and small amounts left on bolts. Another wonderful elderly friend I have gave me all of her scraps and a wonderful friend of mine for my recent bday gave me a huge 11 drawer (some very deep) organizer from Costco and so now I am redoing all my fabric by theme prints, cottons, knit, silks, etc. I remembered in my mind about the mug mats and your company name and happy to see it was still on TH-cam. It is a gloomy rainy Saturday in Alexandria City, VA so I thought I would look you up today. When I first found you (I am a dummy with computers) I never knew about hitting the like button/thumbs up and never knew you could make a comment until my boyfriend asked me recently if I comment on videos and wow - it is an exciting world for me now at home to write to other crafters. I like your video the best for the mug mats. Last Saturday at a craft show I participated in - their were enough sew items so the host of the sale told me to sell my jewelry I made - one of the ladies there had the mug mats made with triangle pieces and then you slip in the flat bottom of your wine glass into it and it catches the condensation on your glass and she told people buying her bundled up mats that then you know which wine glass is your's too if you put it down. So now I want to look up the triangle ones. I am sure you make them the same way. I had an idea too - if you wanted too in the middle of the opening, you can slip in a little note to someone. I thought that would be cool to make with Valentine fabric and slip in a little love note. I hope your still well. I believe I saw one of your videos long time ago and you mentioned you are from New Zealand - someplace I would love to go someday. My brother was a commercial fisherman years ago in the waters of Iceland another place my grandma promised to take me (she use to tell me that when I was young) but, we never got there. My father is from Oldham, England and came over on the Queen Mary in 1948 when he was 8 years old during the war. Much of his family went to a concentration camp in Kovno and died there. I just made a second set of these as a housewarming gift. Love this pattern - so easy, so stylish. I have found that cutting the batting a fraction shy of 5 inches square works well in terms of the seams not being too bulky. I must buy some fusible batting though - it would make this project a lot easier. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial!
What a great little project for leftover fabric - I can't wait to starting making these practical, cute, quick gifts! How about trimming the batting corners diagonally prior to fusing it onto the 5" square to reduce bulk later on? Also, I LOVE your beautiful scarf just as much as I love your wonderful tutorials!
I made some of these in a hexagon shape, but I think I forgot the hidden square. Perhaps I'll try it in a square shape and REMEMBER that hidden square! You're right, they will make a great little Christmas gift.

Please, anyone reading this, help! What kind of double sided fusible batting is she using. I’ve found one on Amazon and ordered it, but it’s too thick for this project. It’s such a simple little project and finding the proper batting has become a huge problem.

I have seen these mats used as coasters for wine glasses. The foot of the glass fits inside the folds ,and stays attached as you move about the room , making a traveling coaster. If they are in different colour they would identify who's glass ,much like a wine charm, that fits on the glass stem . I love your videos , your style is pleasant and easy to follow .
Hi, thanks for watching. It is a fun way to use some squares, adds some texture and also you can fit the base of a stem glass inside so the coaster stays with the glass.
What a fantastic video tutorial. I loved it so much. I thought you'd bias bind round the square but it was more than that. Hi, I rarely pre-wash my fabric, most fabric washes just fine these days.

Too small for mug mats, these are more like Coasters
What is the purpose of making the 4 patch out of doubled/folded fabric pieces? Why not just make a standard 4 patch right sides together etc.?🤔

I don't know of a product that would work, I would most likely wash them regularly.
