I mainly use watercolor, but I discovered opaque mediums and really like them. I love the way you use gouache in a very thick and painterly style. What's really challenging for me is how fast it dries on my mixing palette. I dont like to use too much water either

Nice. This is just like large format photography almost. The way you account for and take into consideration your light and darkest value and work off of that.

I'm currently overrun with illustration work so I can't get back to teaching but I really miss walking around that part of town and painting the buildings and churches.
L's Chimes it’s fascinating that people have specific opinions on what speaks to them. Usually people feel like watercolor looks less “finished.” I personally love watercolor and work mostly in watercolor although a lot of my channel is gouache. I just get so many gouache questions on here it sort of took over my channel haha

I probably wouldnt draw in the hot pink as the go to pop through color. Some successful pastel artists specifically use a red violet in shadows they would make purple or pops of french ultramarine on top of like a deep pine green. They appear more satisfying to the eye I think.

Wow! Impressive. I love the look of gouache, but struggling with learning how to use it as I have been doing watercolor for years. I’m constantly running out of mixed gouache on my palette (being a little frugal with the cost of gouache ) I think I need to push against that.
I tend to use a squirrel or synthetic squirrel like ultimos from escoda for the first layers and then switch to a sable or synthetic sable like an escoda perla or prado for watercolor

This was particularly interesting to see the two side by side. Each different and unique showing off what I was just saying is so good about both. Having the bright pink peek through is a great technique which went far in helping capture the lighting, just made it more interesting. Great job. Wanted to ask which brush you were using for the watercolor in the beginning with the gray handle? It looks so large and yet had such a great point to it making those small details looked fun~ Thanks for posting.
Oooh that is tough.. that is like asking if I have a favorite child haha In honestly love them both for different reasons. Most of what I do is watercolor but I suppose I feel more free in gouache because you can edit on the fly.
For gouache I usually use a Raphael kaerrel flat brush and escoda perla. For watercolor I usually use a da Vinci maestro sable, isabey quill mop or escoda perla and prado synthetics. All have advantages and disadvantages :) thanks for watching
Sarah Burns Studio yes- probably. I find gouache has a specific dry brush effect where it starts to get cakey and thick. It’s something I love about gouache. I also say it falls apart referring to water added because i know people often struggle with it become translucent and uneven when water is added. Especially white.
Jared, this question keeps coming up in my head but never ask. (There may be a difference between plein air vs. indoors. ) So many artists talk about a redrawing and value study. It seems to me that you work more to adjust as the painting progresses. Is that what works for you or how you were trained? I can see it with the gouache but watercolor is harder to adjust other than adding layers if the values aren’t right.
Well- I was never "trained" so I have just discovered my own process and can only speak to how it's come together for me. I do value studies though. A lot of times I draw only value studies to save the moment of light. I did a preliminary value sketch of this. I always do a business card sized thumbnail to work out the major shapes of value. As far as redrawing- I don't redraw anything because I find that the drawing phase is a different mentality and when I'm painting I make a better painting when I'm think of things sculpturally- considering turning form rather than discovering contour lines. Does that make sense? So I practice drawing a ton on the side to increase the skill but when I am going to paint I try to minimize the amount of drawing to just the major shapes of value and let the turns of form work out the rest. It is all drawing though. Pencil or paint.

They are affordable but higher end synthetic- about $20-$30 for a 3/4 inch flat. For small round I use whatever synthetic I grab. Sometimes escoda- sometimes Princeton. The key- I find- is to use big brushes for 90% of the sketch to focus on big shapes

Does anyone know the difference between black gouache and black watercolor? Black gouache is quite a bit cheaper and was wondering if it could be a substitute.
That's a good question. I honestly am not sure. Usually the difference is that gouache has an opacifier in it to make it less translucent/transparent. Could be a brand difference? I'd just make sure you're using artist grade consistently if that's what you're after. Sorry i'm not of more help.

The way you exaggerate colors to make the painting kind of glow is really fantastic, and I'm really glad you said something to the effect of "even if a color isn't really there in the reference, it's okay to add it if it makes the painting better." Thank you for watching :) it is a large escoda perla. They keep a great point and can do both large washes and details.
