I know of no other artist, in any medium, that can take the most average, day-to-day, mundane, hohum scene and turn it into a masterpiece. From “sketchy” (and I don’t mean that artistically) alleys to broken down houses to elderly gentleman sitting at a diner...every piece is a life capture. Wonderful!
James Gurney YES PLEASE DO! I am one that found you in your last vid and I adore you, I want to become a cartoonist when I am grown up. Please do games like the one mentions before and maybe even Minecraft Minecraft would be fun and a new thing to try. Try to only make blocks!
For anyone interested in painting, I highly recommend James Gurneys book “Color and Light”. It’s not a “how to..” book, more of a guide to get you on your way - and after reading it, you will see the world in a new way.: through the lens of someone always looking for the relationship between color and light and how to apply it! (Also, if you order direct from his website- he sometimes signs them 😉)
fakerrain As someone who has had years of experience in art courses, portfolio classes, art history etc.- this book has been indispensable and wish it were around when I was in school. My only regret is purchasing the sole copy from a Barnes and Noble as soon as I saw it. My next copy, I’ll definitely be ordering direct!
I have been watching a bunch of your videos lately and thank's to you I bought a couple o new brushes, a watercolor sketchbook and dusted off my old watercolor box. Went out in the "woods" here in Gothenburg Sweden and started to paint. Not much to look at but it was fun and I will definitely do it a lot more. Thx for sharing your techniques it´s very inspirational.
Beautiful composition. Really enjoyed the explanation of process on this one. You remain one of the best putting it into digestible and understandable words and it’s always inspirational. Thanks for this one!
James book on colour and light is honestly one of the best purchases I've ever made, had such useful concise information for any artist regardless of the medium you work in..not to mention the gorgeous paintings and illustrations..
WOAH! So back when I was younger (2014) I was OBSESSED with ghost in the shell. I wanted to paint art like the background art SO bad, and I literally tried every way I could imagine at the time, and was unable to find any help. 2015 rolls around, and all of a sudden, an article in a blog pops up about it! FINALLY, I had some information to help me figure out how to do this! I went out and bought as many Japanese Poster paint as I could afford, and finally was able to work on that art of my dreams. FLASH FORWARD 4 YEARS! A really cool looking painting video pops up in my recommendation videos, and I’m watching it thinking to myself “this reminds me of ghost in the shell” I see the name James gurney, and get flashbacks to the name “gurney journey” and do some research ITS THE SAME GUY! Crazy awesome coincidence!
That was part of what led to me becoming an author. Up until then, I liked to read, but I was never drawn into a story the way I was with Dinotopia. He made the books so much more than a story, he made the worlds real.
James, I fell in love with your art when I read Dinotopia as a child. You sense of light/shadow, color, and expression really brought the books to life. So glad to see you still sharing your the incredible work with the world!
Mr Gurney I've been a fan of your work since I first saw Dinotopia in a bookstore in the mid 90's. Been subscribed to you here on TH-cam for a while now and I love watching all your gouache studies.
I've recently gotten back into gouache painting after several years of not doing art. Your videos have been so helpful to help me figure out a painting process that works for me, and are also wonderful to just relax to. I love all the lovely different locations you go to and paint.
Wow. You have the unique ability to make my impression at the end be "I actually think that is more beautiful than the real thing" Congrats on your newfound followers, including me! Keep doing what you love!
Hello. I am writing to you from faraway Russia. I watch your videos every day and it inspires me. You are a wonderful artist! and I really like your style! Respectfully!
I started the gouache after i graduate from art school i used to hated it and know i love it im still painting with it! and when i watch your tutorials it give me more inspiration to continue with gouache
It always amazes me the way you can start a painting with seemingly random amorphous blobs of paint on the paper and end up with a beautifully realistic painting in the end. I wish I could think through a painting that way. But for some reason, my brain wants the "realistic phase" right up front. Not that I can't turn out a decent painting that way, but it can get frustrating at times and results in a trash can liner more than I would like it to. Your methodology is so much more relaxed.
I stopped drawing back in middle school, I found your video of the airplane painting and that encouraged me to start drawing again, going into senior year I want to start off with a small drawing book and keep adding to it like you do and learn to add color like you do. Keep up the work my guy, I’m looking forward to more🙏🏾
The airliner video was the first time I saw your video thanks to youtube recommendation, and now I'm binge watching all your videos. I subscribed by the way.
Yep, I'm here after the airliner video.. TH-cam and it's algorithms :) I like your paintings and the way you take us through the process in such a short time..
You deserve all the followers. You're an amazing artist and teacher! I've started to take my paints outside and do observational painting and I very much enjoy it!
Thank you so much for your amazing videos! The airliner video was recommended to me and I'm so glad I watched it! I sent it to a few friends and subscribed instantly! I then proceeded to watch at least four more of your videos! I just got into watercolor and I can't wait to watch everything you've posted! Thank you for sharing your talent with us!
Beautiful! Bob Ross was great. I always wondered how you do these brush strokes the way you do and turn it into a masterpiece. Almost care free but with so much attention to the light, shadow, and use of colors. Your work is just amazing.
Absolutely incredible! Truly amazing to see how you create order from the choas in the beginning, I truly had no idea how you were going to create such beauty from to first few stripes of paint, but it is a joy to see it slowly come together!
I'm one of those who subscribed after seeing you paint the plane. I've done oil painting in the past but water color is what I really like to learn. I've seen a few videos here and there and the last one I saw was Jerry Yarnell's tutorial on OPB. I won't compare who's work or technique is better. I think you are both awesome artists and your demonstration here on youtube and the way you edit and add narration makes your video more interesting and inspirational. Totally worth the sub!
I don't know why your videos are constantly being recommended to me, but I'm admiring them. Then, learned you're the artist of "Dinotopia", I immediately subscribed to "bookmark" your channel for future viewing - can't wait!
Thank you for these lessons, James! I was recommended your How To Start A Watercolor video and I subscribed while watching that and now I’m onto this and others. These are very helpful. I studied art all my life, but only recently started painting in watercolor and feel a bit lost at times, despite all I studied. Channels like yours really improve my work. I really appreciate the work you put into this channel that helps artists like myself grow.
You are a very creative guy. Love your paintings, and yes, the first I saw was the airport one. But your cleverness of making the logo animation shows your talent is not just painting. Thanks for sharing. EDIT: And now I just saw the Squirrel Party.. OMG!
This was incredibly helpful to me, thank you so much for sharing this process. I finally had that "A-ha! That's how it's done!" moment with gouache lol. It was a bit of a rough transition for me as a primarily transparent watercolorist :)
It's more beautiful than the actual landscape. I think the plane video was so popular because of how unusual the location was. It makes you feel like it's possible to capture any moment of your life.
Jake from RASA Easels here: Wow! Noise-canceling headphones at 13 seconds is intense!, "...those golden hills." BUZZ BUZZ (bee attack!!!) "...painting with our friend, Christopher..." I couldn't stop laughing!!! I really enjoy the way you add tips throughout your process. I also find it helpful how you divide up the composition, thank you! Its also wonderful to see how you mix media!
I enjoyed..i want to learn... i admire your not being selfish to teach techniques on how we can learn this beautiful art of capturing scenery on paper.. share more.. god bless you more..
James, you're such a master - very nice to see my colleague from the art center (circa 1980) become so successful - keep up the great awesome creative level, if you ever get the idea to paint city street scenes at night i think a lot of your fans would love to see how your creative talent works out the lighting problems often associated with night scenes (especially the glow effects)
Eh, James Gurney has been painting since decades ago. He's done stuff like Dinotopia and written two books on how to paint. He even worked with Frank Frazetta on a movie in the 80s, so it's easy for him to do this stuff with his experience. I wish I had his skill though, it's much harder for artists to make a living nowadays and people like me have to train while making a living doing non art stuff.
The airport video was how I found out about this channel! Been hooked since. :) Dinotopia was hands down one of my favourite books as a kid. It's so cool to get reacquainted with your work decades later!
I grew up in the US and never heard of him until my kids were looking at youtube. That sort of painting was really kitsch in the 70s, like mushroom canisters and giant wooden spoons. And those velvet paintings😜
I just bought your book, "Color and Light" yesterday. Great take on understanding color theory. I will digitally apply what I have learned after I get my laptop fixed 😁. Thank you.
The airliner video was my first and it was recommended to me from youtube and i subscribed.
Same
Haha! me too! Im Hooked
Tumpa Talapatra I’m a long time subscriber who started a channel that focuses on gouache because of James’s wonderful work!
It sure sucked me in - I knew about "the Dinotopia guy" for a long time but that airliner video is gold.
SAME HERE
You're the airport dude I just watched last night 👍
same here
Same here. Greets from The Netherlands
great vid right?!

It would be amazing if you could paint some iconic places from red dead redemption 2. Seems like the scenery in that game is right up your alley.
My sons gave me a list of video games to check out. Fun idea to paint scenes from the games based on real life.
Yes! Love this idea!
James Gurney YES PLEASE DO! I am one that found you in your last vid and I adore you, I want to become a cartoonist when I am grown up. Please do games like the one mentions before and maybe even Minecraft

@Sam Marrero Thank you, Sam. That's very kind of you to say. :)
these videos make me appreciate being alive. thank you!

derangeddan wholeheartedly agree.
What I find really inspiring is that you are fearless. You’re not afraid to just do it. I’m getting better at that. Thank you.

Had no idea you were the illustrator for Dinotopia. You basically illustrated my early childhood dreams, thank you!
I think he wrote it too

Very inspiring Mr. James Gurney
Your books and videos have taught me a lot over the years, and these gouache videos are fantastic! Thank you
Thats great. I love how you gather with other artists and paint together. Nice activity together
Awesome, James. I hadn't heard of Christopher Leith Evans before. I liked his painting a lot too.
He painted a lot of the matte paintings on Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and since then he has painted epic oils of the California landscape.
Keith P I agree!!
What?! I love Dinotopia! I free-handed the temple in the mountains when I was young! Probably still have it somewhere.
Love your channel James. I can see the passion you have for art and joy of painting.

I like the everyday life paintings, they capture a moment in time the feeling of being there , a window in to the past awesome 😊
Dinotopia rocks! And this picture! Very inspiring.
These great videos inspired me to start outdoor gouache painting myself. So far it's a lot of fun and I'm learning a lot!
Watching this video for almost 7th time today. Almost became a weekly ritual fo watch it once.
The airport video was how I found out about this channel! Been hooked since. :)
Dinotopia was hands down one of my favourite books as a kid. It's so cool to get reacquainted with your work decades later!
Thank you for inspiring me to try painting
I'm so happy I found your channel
Lovet! Pls. Make some more landscapes and still life tutorials in gouache! Am always waiting everyday! 😊

Hi James 😊 Thanks for the introduction. You're truly amazing! 🎨
Fantastic! My compliment 🥂 greetings from Sardinia-Italy 🇮🇹 beautiful week for you dear friend.
This is so relaxing to watch. Also makes me want to do fun and small paintings of things I see where I go!
I just bought your book, "Color and Light" yesterday. Great take on understanding color theory. I will digitally apply what I have learned after I get my laptop fixed 😁. Thank you.
first off! i love your outro. second thing! you are like the bob ross of watercolour and i love it!!!
