Five minutes of flawlessly executed, multi-transitional brilliance. Their record company pushed them for years to produce a radio friendly single. This was their response. Astounding.
Hence the line, BUT GLITTERING PRIZES AND ENDLESS COMPROMISES, CHALLENGE THE ILLUSION OF INTEGRITY. Talk about saying f you to the record companies, in a nice way. BRILLIANT.
The best part is that they had already rejected compromising their vision and integrity when they recorded 2112. That was their response to the demand of a “hit single.” Rush rules! 👊🏻

I can't tell you what a joy it is to see you "young-uns" rocking out to this amazing band. This trio was on a level not matched by many mortals, before or since. Believe me, we KNOW how lucky we were to be teens in the late '70s, early '80s. Man, we rocked out!
Alex lifeson is the most underrated guitarist on the planet
I was a 16 year old boy in 1980 who waited months for the release of this album. Placed the disc on my stereo and flew away to uncharted lands. Ran around for months to all my friends, "Dude! You have to hear this!!" I still feel that thrill every time this song plays. Happy to see the younger generation "Getting it". Cheers.
My experience was exactly like yours back then as a teenager whose world was shaken by this epic song and album by one of the greatest bands ever!

The speed at which they are playing and filling the air with notes is astonishing... especially how clear and crisp it all remains without getting muddy. Because all three of them are absolutely killing it. The guitar riff is rapid and complex. The drumline has super fast triples going. The bass and keyboards as well. It's just insane. The adrenaline this one causes is amazing. Got to see it live once, and oh dear God was it electric.

Not only was Neil Peart a master drummer, his lyrics can be just as amazing. It took me 30 years of listening to this song before I caught the connection between his lyrics during the reggae parts to the classic song by Simon and Garfunkel "The Sound of Silence". Neil takes the lyrics to that famous song from the more innocent "peace and love" era of rock and spins them into how that innocence was lost via music's commercialization and the demands made of the artists by the music industry. "For the words of the PROFITS (was "prophets" in the original) were written on the studio (was "subway" in the original) walls- a concert hall ("and tenement halls" ). And echoes with the sound- of SALESMEN" ("the sound of silence" in S&G's version). Clever.

I only saw Rush once, in 1980, and it was their first concert of the Permanent Waves Tour. I recently found an audio bootleg recording of the San Francisco (Daly City) date for that tour on TH-cam. This would have been almost 2 months after the concert I saw. It was great to hear the concert again after more than forty years. The set list, according to Set List FM was the same as the concert I saw.

I love this! 42 years ago I heard this tune and it was my introduction to Rush. Saw my first show in Dubuque, Iowa in Feb of 81. Moving Pictures Tour. I love seeing today's hip youth discover this music just like I did. It validated the feelings I had at the time. You cats make us old guys feel young again! Now do side one from 2112! It will BLOW your mind. Trust us old Rush stoners from the day!! LOL

Rush has to be the G.O.A.T. band.....I cant think of any band with this level of instrumental proficiency at all levels. Tool is a very, very,......very distant second.

64 year old Torontonian here. Two stories about Rush, which I've mentioned on other channels.
The radio station they were talking about CFNY, was a really great station back in the late 70's, early 80's, and they would have such a great mix of music playing. Over the course of a day, they would be playing the newest post punk out of England, some reggae, heavy metal, weird art rock, lots of local bands trying to get their start, just endless change, whatever they wanted to play, they played, no corporate influence.
Second is Rush played my high school in 1972 for a school "dance". Cost me $1.25 to get in and they played in the cafeteria on a bunch of tables pushed together to make a stage. They played a few songs off the first album which wasn't out at the time (the original drummer John Rutsey was still with them) and some Zeppelin and Hendrix covers. They played a lot of bars in Toronto and around southern Ontario, but one way to get us kids who were too young to get into bars to hear them was to play high schools. Saw them countless times after that, including the 3 night stand at Massey Hall when they recorded "All The World's A Stage".
I met my first husband at a Rush concert December 1977 in Dayton, Ohio. Still have the ticket stub! 😊

More than a drummer.. he was a true percussionist. Neil was The Professor. That wasn't a drum kit as much as it was a full percussion orchestra.
I saw "the boys", perform this song in 1980 on their "Permanent Waves", tour. They had really long hair and were wearing kimonos.😮 In the words of "Ted", it was a most "excellent" concert! R.I.P. Neal peart, "The Professor". The best rock trio ever and they were all excellent musicians and masters of their respective instruments.
I've yet to see a reaction video where the first-time listener wasn't blown away by this song.
I've seen RUSH live at least 6...7 times! There is no better sound of that intro when RUSH takes the stage! After that album...they opened all their shows with it! ***I cry knowing I'll never see them again!***

I saw Rush in concert twice, back in the '80's, and there were times that it was hard to believe it was just three guys onstage. Besides an amazing light and laser show, their live music sounded so full and the production and mix were flawless. So glad I was able to see them when I did.

Im in Toronto,they are putting out a 40th Aniversy of Moving Pictures,what is cool there are a a lot perks, but a 1981 concert from Maple Leaf Gardens never released was yeah ok,i was there,they would play New Years Eve 2 years in a row, yeah i was there, im now close to 62,saw thier names on high school marques when riding my bike around in Scarborough,dam i am old.
Back in the early-80s on the weekends, alternative music focused 102.1 CFNY used to send their DJs out into the Toronto clubs to broadcast their full shifts live from the dance floors. It was a cool concept that made the radio listener really want to join in. It also gave CFNY world wide recognition before the advent of the internet.
Many a weekend we would hop in a buddies car and drive an hour or more to Niagara Falls NY to hit the clubs down there listening to DJs Martin Street and Chris Shepard all the way. Good memories

CFNY's promotional catchphrase was "The Spirit of Radio" in the late 70s.
This rock classic was written by their late great drummer Neil Pearl. The Spirit of Radio is a banger that is a feel good song that sends possible vibes by all who hear it. Two of my favorite Rush songs are Tom Sawyer and The underrated Roll the Bones.
You need to check out a live version of spirit of radio from Cleveland in 2011. At the beginning they play a short comedy video of them in it and then kick into song. One of the most amazing intros ever for a concert. Cleveland is a 2 home for RUSH from the beginning Cleveland loved RUSH.
Now imagine that this 'spirit of radio', which was the motto of the radio station in Toronto (CFNY-FM 102.1) that this song was dedicated to, was playing around the time people were loyally listening to that rebel station. A time when most other FM stations had succumbed to the pressures of corporate radio commercialism. CFNY would, prophetically, fall victim to the same pressures, but for the moment, they were still a beacon of independence on the radio scene. This song will always be my favourite Rush tune because of its historical significance and just how bloody great that station was in its heyday. Long live the spirit of radio.

I've Loved Rush for almost 42 years now ?
I really didn't Love any particular musical group at the age of 12 1/2 but when i started hanging with a dude named Perry Lopez who Loved Rush, (now I don't know how he introduced me to their music,must have been a cassette tape or album he brought with him to my house) I couldn't believe how complicated their tunes were! All the other music on the radio, wbcn, or 94HJY, or wcoz, was good and all but Rush tunes made me work a little bit harder to figure out each song they had, it wasn't the boring verse, chorus, verse, chorus simple to understand and copy tune, Rush's music was hard to figure out and I freakin loved that, plus even back then they were master musicians, no three chord progression, or simple drum beats, or singing about partying and hot chicks, this stuff was DEEP and Very complex !!
Their music also changed with the times, 80's 90's 2000's 2010's...Their music helped me through alot of TOUGH TOUGH times.

The entire introduction of this song from the “get go”!! It’s the bass that gets me.. Lee gets down! This trio just makes magic happen! It’s poetry in motion where they’re always in sync.. Music geniuses!! I can’t say enough about this group.. this was a staple band in our home! My brother was so inspired by this band, he picked up drumming and never missed a concert.. My first concert was Rush in 1976 I was 13 years old. It was at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Tickets were like $10 It was the All the World's a Stage tour. Setlist was the same as the live Album.

I heard that they prearranged every aspect of the music down to 1/20th of a second. That is how they all go off on a tangent exactly in sync.

Radio is the entire point...radio, for all it's faults, made modern music...Is hard to realize but we heard the Beatles, Stones, Everyone on the radio....You fellows have No idea how it was back in the day, was all, ALL we had! No inet, no cell phones, had the dial phones, Yes, I am an old dude, but the spirit lives! Radio is still amazing, and , like they said, basically free, when FM first came out, was such a trip! Some dude would get on, you could tell he was stoned or at least comfortable, and they would play an entire album or album side, Rush did props just as Queen which came along much later, called it radio Gaga, Rush was warning of that...salesmen...I wish you guys all the best, that was a Great react! Take some time to really think about it...is worth it

You really only hear this kind of tight playing, snap sync and zero instrument lag in a band who know each other this well, trust each other this much and love their instruments to this degree.

I saw RUSH live 6 times from 1974 - 1982. I never saw any other bands more than twice. The video for this song made for R30 or R40 celebration is great because it assigns some names from radio at that time, that were pioneering trendsetters of the business!

Part of the magic that a lot of people miss with Alex Lifeson's opening riff is the flange effect he uses.

Speaking of record company executives and their expectations: after Rush's third album, the execs at their record label threatened to drop them if they didn't come up with more "radio friendly" songs; 2112 was their way of telling them to "stick it where the sun don't shine," with a 7 part 20 minute title track that would be come to be regarded as their greatest masterpiece ever, giving them the freedom to chart their own musical course. If you liked the transitions and the instrumentals here, just listen to the title track, and prepare yourself for a real treat!

The various breaks in the song represent changing radio stations. Genius. Rush is the greatest.
Another great Canadian band of that era was Prism. They were more noted for the careers the band members had almost moreso than the band itself. Wiki: Prism is also noteworthy for launching the careers of several former group members, including international record producer Bruce Fairbairn, songwriter Jim Vallance, Powder Blues Band frontman Tom Lavin and Headpins and Chilliwack musician Ab Bryant. A pre-fame Bryan Adams also contributed as a songwriter to several early Prism releases. Judging by what you guys seem to like, their song Armageddon would probably go over well.

RUSH one of my all-time favorite band ever, i LOVE this song!! A good rock song about radio is from a one hit wonder band named Autograph and the song is Turn Up The Radio, i love this song, came out in 1984. Try this one!! Keep up the good work!!
So I heard another reactor say that Getty Lee's voice reminded them of Fraggle Rock. The Rush Family wouldn't have any other vocalist for this band! I'll give you a couple to consider. "Freewill" with perhaps the best breakdown in rock history, and one you may not get a request for, "Passage to Bangkok." Love that you guys feel the music...great reaction!

For those old enough to remember twist tuning a car radio, I've always loved how this song 'dials' to the rock bit, then to the reggae bit, then to the rock anthem bit, then back the reggae bit. I remember doing that: trying to decide between different stations, playing different favourite songs on at the same time. It even starts off with that 'hunting' sound of moving the dial past the station and then doubling back.
All that sound folks, by a 3 piece band..just let that settle in for a moment.
