This was quite an unexpected review of this movie. I think having seen the previous movie right before greatly affected you guy’s perspective which is totally fair. My friends and I are in our late 20s and never saw the original, so this was so cool to experience as an entry to the franchise. Everyone I’ve recommended this to has thoroughly enjoyed the film and had a much more sympathetic view of Kate and the struggles she faces in the movie. I felt the same way about this film as I did with Top Gun Maverick. Bummed you guys didn’t feel as strongly about it, but to each their own. Plan on watching it again before it leaves theaters. Thanks for the review as always! ❤
I think this movie lacks the "charm" of the first one, carried by the original cast. Jeremie Davies, Philip Seymore-Hoffman, Jamie Gertz, Cary Elwes, etc. Sure, there's total silliness, but that cast pulled it all together. I didn't mind this sequel. Thought it was a fun ride and we had plenty of laughs, but it was missing that cast "it" factor outside of Glen Powell.
Twisters was fun and thoroughly fine. Just fine. I was mainly interested to see how the indie film director of 'Minari', Lee Isaac Chung, would fare with this big summer spectacle. I'm glad that he used local OKC and Arkansas talent for the film, and I think it was smart to make subtle references to climate change than say it outright and sound preachy. I didn't think I'd get teary-eyed with a silly blockbuster about tornadoes, but scenes of the twisters' devastation and destruction really got to me. I've been a Daisy Edgar-Jones fan since 'Normal People' but agree that she was horribly underwritten here. I'm finally a Glen Powell fan after 'Hitman' and was surprised to be drawn (more?) to Anthony Ramos and Brandon Perea's performances. And: The movie doesn't explicitly say the words climate change, but it heavily intimates at it. I am invested in environmental sustainability and the mention of frequent, ubiquitous, rare natural disasters was enough for me. To me, Twisters drives home the urgency about climate action, whereas "Don't Look Up" and Apple TV+'s 'Extrapolations' were too insistent, and therefore seemed holier than thou. Twisters passes the LA Times' new Climate Reality Check meter, a la The Bechdel Test, but for climate...err..representation (?) in Hollywood. www.latimes.com/environment/newsletter/2024-03-01/column-where-is-climate-change-on-film-and-tv-theres-now-a-bechdel-test-for-that-boiling-point
A couple West Coast people complaining that they ran into a movie theater for shelter and complaining that they asked about basements... stay in your lane fellas. You're flat wrong on both counts.
I agree more with Dave on this one. I’m a big fan of the first movie and I enjoyed this one quite a bit as well, but the script felt less earnest and slightly more camp. I also think Jan De Bont’s direction with Mark Mancina’s score just has an intensity that this one lacks somewhat. It’s a fun movie, but overall less thrilling than the first in my opinion.
Really struggling to see what Devindra likes so much about The Acolyte. Didn’t grab me at all. Characters and motivations felt off, looked cheap often, fully on Dave’s train on this.
The movie probably skirts the issue of having more tornados because we aren’t. I live in the area that these movies take place and we have some years where there are way less tornados and storms, and some years we have more. It’s up and down year to year. Thank God they didn’t use this movie to preach about climate change or any cringey message like that. It’s a great movie like it is without the propaganda.
been listening the podcast for years, perhaps too long because some of the conversations are starting to become annoying. In the spoiler section when Dave and Jeff are having a big laugh at how stupid the plot is, specifically the characters trying out help the people, that felt completely off. Lately every time Dave says the words « it makes no sense » it sets my teeth on edge.
I saw this in Dolby Cinema(Almost all Major Films I see in Dolby, IMAX here and there, and 4DX for Vehicular Based Films, Top Gun🛬, Bullet Train 🚅,Ford V Ferrari, Fast and The Furious🏎️ etc.) This Film was Quite Underwhelming in my Opinion. There's Some Entertaining bits but they wasted the initial Premise and Turned it into something boring. Also, the Sound Design(a Key Aspect on a film like this) is Not Crazy Enough. The Sound Design in a Film like This, is a Key Component, that has to be used at an Insane Level, a Sensory Overload level, in order for it to not Feel like a Waste of Time. Pros - ⚡🌪️ - The Beginning, the very Beginning is Very Good, great High Energy & Tragic Start off. ⚡🌪️ - Glenn Powell, When Glenn Powell enters the Film, it went up a notch further. He and His Crew Bring even more Energy into the film. ⚡🌪️ - The Premise of the 2 Teams Racing against eachother to acquire Different Goals was Excellent. THEY SHOULD OF KEPT IT LIKE THAT. 🤦 ⚡🌪️ - The Tornadoes themselves were Quite Entertaining(sort of), and in Dolby Cinema, the Use of Ceiling, Front, Surround, and Rear Speakers was Used Well enough.(That Scene with them Hiding in the Swimming Pool had tons of Energy Pinging around the Auditorium ⚡) Cons - 👎 - The Premise Went from 2 Teams against eachother, to them saving towns and then to eventually, the one girl saving the day. What an absolutely Wasted Premise. KEEP THE 2 TEAMS AGAINST EACHOTHER THEME. That should of been the film. It's far more engaging. 🔉 - Again on the Sound Design, it was ok But THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH. They needed to go full force on the Sound Design, the Sensory Overload should of been in Full Effect in this film. There's only 1 Scene that was hitting the very top of the Red Bars of the Microphone Meter Sensory Experience (Swimming Pool Scene). The Final Tornado wasn't even That much of an Experience, the Final Tornado was Visually Very Good but the Sounds Design in that one was ok at best. 🔩 - Those Screws On the Side of Glen Powells Truck, to hold the Truck Down WHILST NEAR OR IN A TORNADO. How Stupid Do the Filmakers think Audiences Are? This has Got to be a Joke. Overall, The Film Just Could of Been Better than it actually was. Also, there's been quite a few Letdowns recently, Maxxxine was a Letdown, Love Lies Bleeding was a Terrible Execution of a Excellent Idea, Godzilla X Kong was absolute crap compared to Godzilla King of the monsters, Godzilla Vs Kong, Godzilla Minus one, Fall Guy was too long, Argylle was a Numbing Disaster of a Watch, Kingdom of the planet of the apes wasn't good, Madame Web(Truly was a Gift to Cinema, laughing at just How Pointless it was during the Watch), Rebel Moon Parts 1 & 2(True Atrocities of Cinema), Longlegs although ok(First Half was Great), should of been better, Bad Boys 4(Just terrible). - However, we have had some brilliant/good films, Abigail (excellent ), Civil War, a key Specimen of the Sensory Overload Experience (specifically sound), Challengers(excellent), Mean Girls(Really Good), The Dead Don't Hurt (Very Good), Kalki 2898 AD(Flawed But Great Experience in Dolby Cinema), Horizon(Very Good, although it does have terrible edits, and It looks like Costners Dream is Over), Fly Me to the Moon(Great & Scarlett was Firing in that Film), Drive Away Dolls(Super Fun), Dune 2 (a near Masterpiece), Furiosa(an Actual Masterpiece), Inside Out 2(Brilliant), Kinds of Kindness(Great), Late night with the Devil(such an experience). Let's Hope Deadpool & Wolverine doesn't Disappoint (which it most likely will not). 🦸

My god I LOVE Branden Perea and Glen in this! I found my love for Glen after "Hit Man" too!
Loved the homage to Community's missing lover footage.
The AMC Theater on the Upper West Side in New York City has a basement level, complete with bathrooms and a concession area.
West coast people see basements like they see mountain lions. They know they exist, but treat them as weird uncommon occurrences.
My hometown theater had a creepy ass basement that was used to store the concession supplies.
A couple West Coast people complaining that they ran into a movie theater for shelter and complaining that they asked about basements... stay in your lane fellas. You're flat wrong on both counts.
Yeah that felt a bit off to me. A basement below a movie theatre is not thaaat strange or unusual, lol.
if somehow Deadpool gets a better review from the guys I fear they have lost it all
