I saw this movie when I was 13 with a bunch of friends. We were the perfect audience for it. This may not have made much at the theater, but in VHS rentals, it was king. I wish we could see how much it actually pulled in from tape rentals, because copies were always checked out at my rental store. Such a fun little movie and so very 80's. Rest in peace, Robert Urich.
Saw this in the theater--twice--but I didn't really appreciate it until it ran on cable and I'd watch some or all of it dozens of times. In isolation certain parts--particularly the final time-jumping gag--are just so brilliant it's obvious this is an uncut gem of a film.
This was one of my favorite movies as a child. I probably enjoyed the robots the most. I too was not a big fan of the scene with the chomping device, even at a young age.
IDK why my mom decided this should be the first movie her young son should see in the cinema, but the castration machine still gives me nightmares 37 years later.
I saw this film as a four year old boy at a neighbor's sleepover. The reaction from the girl's mom at the chomper scene was; "Look, they're girls now‽".
Absolutely brilliant I actually started watching your review with my teeth clenched.... thinking 💭 What's this "geek" going to say about one of my favorite movies 🎥? And you presently surprised me Thank you Classic 🎥 You definitely hit on many good points Interesting... I didn't know anything about MGM or shooting locations Good thing they took out eating baby 🐀 rats .. scenes in bonus DVD 📀 Corny jokes made it over the top funny... with Stellar 🎭 performances Love Ice Pirates Great review 😮 Thank you 🤝
I saw this as a kid and i loved it. When i was in my early 20s i worked at a video store, this was the first movie i took home to watch. its one of my all time favorite goofy movies. it feels like a slightly better than average tv movie one very 80s thing about it(among many) is the video game space combat scene. when the captain is shooting the imperials that are chasing his ship and his friend is like.. oh oh get that one, oh that one look out for that one.. that is the arcade experience right there.
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for this. Overall it's a mess but it has lots of great moments in it and it always seemed to me they were at least trying to make something good. :)
Yes, the production value is less than Top-Notch! But I feel that some gives the Flic character. (Besides, I've never felt 'the budget' should be the primary factor in enjoying a movie!) I always loved the flic! A true homage to Golden Age Sci/Fi! Thanks TUG!
My oldest brother is 19 years older than me, so by the time I was 14-15, he was reasonably established in life, and knew that our parents were nuts (in as good a way as that allows; they weren't abusive or anything). So he gave me a key to his house and said at least it was a safe place to hang out away from the parental units. How is that germain to this video? He had one hell of a VHS collection, and that's where I was introduced to the Ice Pirates, Battle Beyond the Stars, and Backaroo Banzai. I'm a better man for it.
Your brother is a good man for giving you access to such great movies! 👍🏻 (P. S. Everybody’s parents are nuts. Some in better ways than others, but all nuts.)
Great Story! (Except the bit about the flakey parents... commiseration!) 'BBtS' is possibly my favorite adaptation of '7 Samurai'! (RIP Mr. Saxon!) & I always wished they had gone ahead with the Buckaroo Sequels!
@@thrashpondopons2776 Not Flakey, they were/are good parents. We are a big family (hence the age difference between me and my brother), and I have the utmost respect and admiration for the work they put in to keep us comfortably middle class. And they got all of their kids to high school diplomas without criminal records, so they did something right. That said, they're neurotic as all get out. And having nine kids probably is what did it to them! So I'm just lucky to have older siblings who were essentially adults by the time I was around and looked out for me.
@@KonElKent Poor choice of words on my part. Apologies! Whilst growing up some 4 decades ago my mom (who made tremendous sacrifices for me & always had the best of intensions!) sometimes made decisions that drove me crazy. But still have the utmost respect for her! Not sure if that clears things up... but again, no disrespect intended!
Such a goofy, enjoyable film. The robots were my favorite characters when I was young and I wanted to find a toy of them for the longest time. Haven't seen it in like a decade so I don't know how well it’s aged but it has that “Nothing But Trouble” vibe, which is good by my standards. The other Raffill movie I've seen was When the Wind Blows North, which the only thing I remember from that was Dan Hagerty being Dan Hagerty (drunkenly interacting with animals)
I went into this review after having not seen it since I was a kid. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it still holds up! I’ve never heard of When the Wind Blows North, but you’ve got my attention with your description! 😂
A Keeper in my library, though it feels more like a made for TV movie it has enough smiles and downright stupid (Funny) stuff in it making it a good watch every now and then.
A friend of mine showed this to me when we started hanging out. He said it was a routine ritual of his to rewatch that movie. And while I found it really stupid and dumb, I myself can't stop re-watching it. I'm a Ron Perlman fan too so, there's that.
I saw this many years ago, but I don't remember it. So I should just see it again. I remember that it wasn't well-received by critics and audiences alike in 1983.
The robots are great kind of a chaotic factor when theyre supposed to work flawlessly. Also they had a funny VD joke and a Videogame scene thats really good
The 80's were the heyday of cheesy sci fi movies like Moontrap (my personal favorite), Spacehunter: Adventures in The Forbidden Zone and Battle Beyond the Stars.
An interesting question is raised with the question of one's favorite screwball SF comedy. Are there any others? The closest I can think of is Woody Allen's SLEEPER, and Mr Allen has become a somewhat uncomfortable topic, recently. Maybe GALAXINA though I can't vouch for whether or not it's funny. The fact of the matter is that, STAR TREK IV notwithstanding, SF tends to shy away from trying to be purposefully funny.
@@TheUnapologeticGeek OUCH!!! Wasn't even thinking of SPACEBALLS. (I tend to categorized Mel Brooks in his own category. ) Also forgot about DARK STAR, and need to watch it again. Not sure I would classify ROCKY HORROR as a screwball comedy, but I can see the argument. (The nitpicker in me wants to say Strictly Musical, but it depends on one's sense of humor. ) And Hitchhiker's Guide I would debate only because my associations with British Comedy tend more towards the dry wit rather than the screwball comedy, though I know that they have done both types. And I know the BBC miniseries better than the movie, which didn't work as well for me. (And I am certainly aware that there's room for disagreement there.)
Dark Star and Starcrash are my favourite space comedies. I don't even know if Starcrash is intentionally or unintentionally funny but it sure makes you laugh. David Hasselhoff with a lightsaber, come on.
A pity I didn't get to see this one when I was a child. Unfortunately, Time Travel isn't possible at the present time. (If it isn't possible at the present time, then it can't be possible in any time. Although, we can travel forwards in time... but I digest). This means that I can not send the film back to when I was a child. Which means that I can never see this film as a 13 year old.
This was awesome midnight movie at the Fox theater 🎭 and the back was a good price people lined up around the square to watch it that's the equivalent of four blocks bill hillytown
Saw this in movie theaters - that conveyor belt scene had me in stitches!
thank you for the review, I remember this film , actually saw it in a theater way back then.R.I.P. Dan Tanna

This was before movies were made by routine and formula but it still works better than 90% of modern comedys / sci-fi spoofs
I was 10 and went by myself to see this at the local second-run theater and it has been with me forever since.
Saw this in the theater--twice--but I didn't really appreciate it until it ran on cable and I'd watch some or all of it dozens of times. In isolation certain parts--particularly the final time-jumping gag--are just so brilliant it's obvious this is an uncut gem of a film.

It's right up there with the sleestaks for scarring young children.

Back in middle school, I thought this was awesome! Your review was spot on!
I love these reviews of the old movies. You really put them in context of the time and how they were made. Thanks!

My only gripe: Wish they showed Mary Crosby nude more
Yes, it is a fun movie. As with "Flash Gordon" it has some real camp value.
Ice Pirates ..a goofy ,fun, watchable escapade from the early 80s.
I went to a boarding school. Our dorm had this movie. It was one of our favorites. That, Police Academy, And Just One Of The Guys were played often.
Saw this when I lived in Japan. I've always loved it as the fun, popcorn movie it is.

I loved this gonzo absurdist masterpiece when I was an '80s kid in the '80s and I still do! Its cartoony vibe is similar to 1985's Crimewave.

I would love to see Mel Brooks' direct that remake.
Scared me back in the day too. Budweiser's philosophy certainly hasn't changed :)

So odd, looking back, thanks to TBS, this movie was probably just as important as Star Wars, and my Han & Luke & Leia became Ice Pirates!!
I love this movie. Saw it for the first time on Turner Classic Movies.
Watched it in 2023 with a friend. Surprised to see Ron Pearlman. We really did enjoy the movie.
