My girlfriend and I just saw Wicked for the first time the other weekend and it was amazing! Our theaters have been full since it came out. Can’t wait to own a physical copy.
Please remember Wicked still has to open in Japan in March, and let me tell you Wicked is HUGE in Japan! That will provide a healthy boost to the box office total too 🤷🏻♂️
This was a big fumble for Universal because Wicked isn't a worldwide sensation. Most of its B/O is from the States, and Universal could've snagged a lot of rewatches from the fans until at least February.
“isn’t a worldwide sensation” mind you some of these countries have had Wicked replica/non replica productions in the past or are about to have a new season
Universal gets a much bigger chunk of VOD sales than they would get from cinema ticket sales now that Wicked has been playing for so many weeks. The cinema owners get a bigger cut the longer a movie stays in theaters.
I was told by multiple people that VOD releases don’t effect the box office I knew that was misinformation my question is does VOD releases effect box office overall? Because I’ve seen multiple films do well that released on VOD a month or 45 days later.
Yea because I’m sure they won’t make a dime off the VOD rentals/purchases. Didn’t it sell one million copies in its first week of digital release? More people would rather watch movies at home, BIG SHOCKER!
I just watched the sing a long a week ago and hearing it’s coming to digital made me think why when it’s a month out and that’s what kills the box office these days
Totally agree!! Universal Studio is stupid to leave a lot of money on the table by releasing it on POV way too soon when Wicked is still hot at the theaters. Sadly now it has hurt its BO 😢
Studios need to stop releasing to stream, even if it’s for full purchase less than 60 days after release. Theaters need to implying rules or something. This is ridiculous
I'm from the U.K. and I just checked the cinema screens around London for Wicked. I checked about 20 screens and it's still doing really well, nearly selling out and it's on VOD here too. So this thing has some serious legs. Yes, I agree VOD has hurt it but it will still do well and Japan releases in March which will add at least another 50 million to the total. I personally have been to the cinema 6 times to see it. That ending has to be seen on the big screen!
John. You hit the nail on the head. I was planning to take my wife & daughters to the theater to watch it a second time until my wife realized that it was on VOD & we bought it then for $30. We would have easily spent $80-$90 total on tickets & concessions if we went to the theater.
Maybe they did VOD so soon is because Part 2 comes out in 10 months. The very first teaser for part one came out during Super Bowl last year and I suspect we’ll get a teaser for part 2 this coming Super Bowl which is a month away. I think it was done to make space for part 2, using the success of part 1 they maybe go even harder with press and advertising for the next movie. Also, from reviews I’ve seen so many people who watched at home who otherwise wouldn’t have seen it theaters are seemingly more interested in seeing part 2 in theater.
I’m one of the people who fully anticipated taking my wife to the theater last weekend to see it, but discovered it was available on VOD, did the math and realized that for nearly the same price of going to the theater, I could own it outright. It was a simple decision for me. Universal should have absolutely waited another three or for weeks before dropping it.
As a huge Wicked fan I do agree Universal has sent it to vod WAY too early giving the amazing legs it was having, but regardless of all that 10 million in its seventh weekend is still brilliant.
Another stupid move by the studios to send a movie to VOD just like they did to Dune part 2 when it was still playing well on IMAX. Why the hell aren't theater owners complaining to the studios, it's their money being taken away! Theater owners need the revenue to make up for the losses earlier in the year.
It still needs Japan , which releases in March and wicked is huge there . Why in March !? Who knows why . But it could’ve done more than 850 w the huge market in Japan
Despite how much us movie fans don’t wanna admit it it’s true, there are still a lot of people out there who are lazy when it comes to seeing movies, like they just wait for it to come on home video no matter what movie it is, and so when a move like the one Universal pulled with Wicked comes along the lazies are like “Oh cool, I can just watch it on my couch instead” So this was an idiotic move, because when you’re already aware of how a lot of moviegoers are when it comes to seeing movies doing this is like having these reservations at this big, fancy restaurant and then giving them a coupon that just delivers it to their house and being shocked when they go “Let’s just do that instead”
I don't agree with that. I think that what movie fans need to admit, is that most people don't really care about that many movies. Let me give you an example. I'm interested in watching Wicked. But not THAT interested to go to the cinema and spend that much money on it. VOD just made it easier and faster to watch a movie at home that it was in the 90s, but it's basically the equivalent of a movie performing better on blockbuster than on theaters. The difference is that the industry at least made SOME money with video renting. Nobody actually uses VOD now, but that's on them, because instead of offering a simple cheap service, they make you pay the equivalent of a bluray to watch it online, nobody is gonna do that. Put it on Netflix, easy access, 1.99 or less, and you'll have some money.
Massive effect, was going to take my daughter and sister to go see it in the cinema before they went back to school and seen if was up for £20 at home to buy already so makes sends for the same amount and buy it and just order them a pizza as it’s way cheaper than going for a meal and snacks when there. Still don’t understand why company’s still ain’t realised that people want to go to the cinema. We ain’t in the covid times anymore but when you make it cheaper to sit at home what’s the point. But hey I guess thats what they want, it’s more money from them and none for the cinema company’s.
Haven’t seen it. Waiting for it to come to streaming. We paying so much already for streaming might as well watch movies there as well. I hit the big screen maybe 2-3x a year only.
John always enjoy your thoughts...but was hoping that your regulars would push you just a little harder...Kids Back to School - it matters....and you said 50K Day 1 VOD views ? well that is straight profit to universal or really close to it....unlike the 65% or less USA Movie theater split...even less overseas....Also you showed chart in video that showed only Wicked added 110 theaters...plus they WON a Golden Globe...Moana didnt and wont Win any awards...should of gone straight to Disney +. Bottom line all factors need to be Added but you started the conversation, and we appreciate you for that...Carry On.....
....how do you know that vod sales would be the same one month later? You think Comcast/Universal has an entire team of people studying these things? I bet they do. Yet you know better because you are a loudmouth personality with no skin in the game.
Thee studios get a bigger cut from streamers than they do from the theaters once it hits a certain number of weeks so it might be more money for the studios. There is no guarantee the vod sales would be the same. People might see in the theaters and then not bother to get it on vod.
My girlfriend and I just saw Wicked for the first time the other weekend and it was amazing! Our theaters have been full since it came out. Can’t wait to own a physical copy.
The final 10 minutes of Wicked was pure cinema magic!
Please remember Wicked still has to open in Japan in March, and let me tell you Wicked is HUGE in Japan! That will provide a healthy boost to the box office total too 🤷🏻♂️

In the UK it had the largest opening week of the year
It’s been a huge success world wide
Majority of most Hollywood movies box office come from the USA
@@JasaphireNot really, compared to other big movies

They should of rereleased Wicked on VOD when part two comes out.
Well yeah, now all the broadway/theater kids can finally sing along in their own house.
Yea because I’m sure they won’t make a dime off the VOD rentals/purchases. Didn’t it sell one million copies in its first week of digital release? More people would rather watch movies at home, BIG SHOCKER!

The 4k blu ray release is in February
Universal should've waited another month, let it have January in a slower release month. But it comes out on DVD/Blu in a month.
We wanted to watch it again but didnt because the VOD was coming out so soon.
Universal must have been paid HUGE for licensing.
AGREE!!!! What a stupid move !!!
Totally agree!! Universal Studio is stupid to leave a lot of money on the table by releasing it on POV way too soon when Wicked is still hot at the theaters. Sadly now it has hurt its BO 😢
Not the best idea to released Wicked on VOD while still being in theaters.
But to be fair, Wicked made their money back.
Studios need to stop releasing to stream, even if it’s for full purchase less than 60 days after release. Theaters need to implying rules or something. This is ridiculous

I think John's insider friend might be off a bit. Hollywood Reporter just published a story saying Wicked has made $70 million so far with VOD.
John. You hit the nail on the head. I was planning to take my wife & daughters to the theater to watch it a second time until my wife realized that it was on VOD & we bought it then for $30. We would have easily spent $80-$90 total on tickets & concessions if we went to the theater.
SAME! I was going to take my sis and some friends to go see it in theaters but noticed it was already on VOD... so we watched it at home.

Wicked is done in theaters soon will be in dvd
Not really, even in VOD is still in the top 5. I would say a move it’s done on theaters when it’s below number 9 or out of the top 10.
I mean, it still made over $10 million for the weekend. Half the movies don't do that in their entire run these days.
As a huge Wicked fan I do agree Universal has sent it to vod WAY too early giving the amazing legs it was having, but regardless of all that 10 million in its seventh weekend is still brilliant.
The insider was totally off. They made $100 mil. for a first week from VOD.
Like any musical, I was waiting for VOD to avoid theater kids with no impulse control.
Another stupid move by the studios to send a movie to VOD just like they did to Dune part 2 when it was still playing well on IMAX. Why the hell aren't theater owners complaining to the studios, it's their money being taken away! Theater owners need the revenue to make up for the losses earlier in the year.
during covid, the theather owner conceded too much and now they don't have much legs to stand on to push back
Theaters barely make money from tickets. They make most of their money from concessions.
They also did it to A Quiet Place Day One.
and Wicked added 110 theater screens
Wicked still hasn’t been released in Japan and won’t be until March. It is expected to make a lot of money there due to the huge fan base.
Till March?! Why??? That’s crazy
@ not sure
Sounds good for viewers.

Stupid stupid move by Universal.
Didn’t Disney prove anything to them with Inside Out 2 & D&W hitting VOD 🤦🏾♂️🤣

Watching movies in theaters is 100x better.
This is one film that deserves the big screen. You'll regret it if you don't.
Cool
At the end of the day Universal are still gonna do what universal do lol, they LOVE that 45 day window!
Had they waited one more month to release it in VOD they would have made enough money to buy Ariana Grande some food.
Hey how about I pay you some money so that you stop being an asshole
