Squier Bronco bass mods Ep.12: Can I make this Bronco sound like my custom short scale F Bass?

- In this unsponsored video episode, I explain how I have created a 'stunt double' (back up bass) with this modified Squier Bronco Sonic series short scale bass. I wanted a backup bass that had a similar vibe and more importantly, similar output level compared to my custom F Bass short scale VF4. Although the specs are quite different between these basses, they both sport Japanese Fender (MIJ) precision pickups and are now strung with the same strings (Fender short scale nickels 95-40). I think this Squier Bronco sounds pretty close to the F Bass in this configuration! The F Bass still wins in terms of playability, though.
Both basses were recorded direct through a Line6 Pod Go with the identical settings.

Loving your demos! The only reason I don’t use flats on my P is because I find that rounds with a pick every once in a while is the best bass tone ever. And giving up that attack with flats doesn’t seem worth it. But then I hear your videos and am convinced I need to get flats lol
Thanks so much for the encouragement!! It is luxurious (not essential) but having a few basses set up with flats and a few set up with rounds has made my life easier in terms of being able to quickly find the right sound for a particular song or project. Gets pricey, unfortunately….

Very nice comparison. I also didn't have much luck shielding my '70 Mustang bass pickup cavity, I just did the pick guard. The round wounds sound good. I am a "lazy" player and round wounds squeak too much for my playing style 😅Thanks Jonathon. Too bad you aren't in the states, I'd mail you my stock Aerodyne p'ups. Sending stuff to Canada is a pain. Thanks for the generous offer! Customs can be an annoyance. I prefer flatwounds for a lot of what I do, but some basses just ‘prefer’ and ask for different strings. Instruments take on a life of their own and fight you when they don’t get their way!

@@jonathanwong458musicGood point, I wanted to use flats on my gretsch hollowbody but it wouldn't settle into them, everything was just "off", gave up and switched back to rounds and found myself falling back in love with it
Similar experiences here. Not sure what reasoning or science is behind this phenomenon!

Thank you - as always, quality and informative content. Would it be too much trouble to ask you to show how the neck pocket is inside? I've bought a B-stock Squier 60s classic vibe and had some trouble adjusting the neck. I've noticed since the beginning it wasn't perfectly fit to the pocket. Then, when I took out the neck, the horror. Amateur routing workmanship with three courses in different depths, chipped parts with a blunt tool, a deeper area with plunging marks, corners not cleaned properly, and the neck itself stained with paint (so, they inserted it before even the paint drying). I'd like to know how quality is the routing on the Bronco.
Oh man!! The recent surf green one? Yeah man, stay tuned to the next (and probably final) episode. I'll pull it apart and work it in for you. B-stocks are usually a bit of a gamble for places you can't see. Typically, it's finish issues or blemishes that'll make it a B-stock, but poor routing is unfortunately on a different level.....Hopefully I won't find any surprises in there! Thanks for watching!
@@jonathanwong458music Yep, the green one! There were some blemishes in the neck (the previous owner seems to have tried to soften the frets' edges but ended up hurting the wood), but I've already taken care of it (took out the gloss polyurethane, rounded all the edges, finished with shellac, oil and wax for a natural feel), - that was expected, and Thomann offers a guarantee on their B-stocks. But I don't want to return it; I put a lot of effort and I like a lot the instrument, even though I kind of lost some trust in Squier (of course, I don't want to generalize). Will appreciate a lot seeing how the Bronco's pocket is routed - your videos have been quite helpful on seeing Bronco's potential for modding - I also consider to use it to create a stun bass. I’ll be briefly talking about neck finishing in the next episode too! A lot of work, as you know. What strategy did you use? Chemical, steel wool/sand paper by hand, power sander, heat gun?
It’s not just Squier, everybody’s quality control has misses these days, unfortunately. I just bought a fender that had a bridge mounting issue!

Great work! Now, about the expense and effort to get the Bronco to about equal...? Also, I would like to see a similar comparison to the Squier Classic Vibe Mustang Bass, the most likely trade-up from the stock Bronco
Good question! Unfortunately, I no longer have a Squier CV mustang in my pocession. I do try to mix these videos to similar audio levels, so one could open up 2 windows and play some of older CV mustang videos for comparison. It’s what I do with cymbal demos! Unless otherwise stated, I use the same recording chain and settings for most basses.
Now, if left up to me, it may sound crazy, but I actually like this current bronco setup and combo better than the stock CV mustang. The satin bronco neck feels more slick than the glossy CV neck. But so much is personal taste!

I hate the gloss, but tonally, I like the CV a lot
1000 grit paper will easily take care of the gloss if the package tonally meets your needs.
