South Westland: 3 traffic cones = a dozen heavy earthmovers doing their thing rebuilding the road
All of the North Island: 3 traffic cones = a pebble has fallen onto the road

I swear I've been there back in 2020, when I visited New Zealand. Funny enough, that type of bus was exactly the one my tour group was riding on.

In Australia the cops would totally shut the road and traffic would be banked up for miles. They'd be at least five vehicles and ten people working on traffic control. But still only the same two doing the actual recovery. Seems a much better system you have.

At least they didn't shut the road like the cops would have done plus no wasting time puting out about 100 road cones

South Westland is still a "common sense" location

Seems an unlikely place for an off road excursion. It would be interesting to see that drivers log book! Great work by those involved.

??? Does the camera on top feed into cab of truck at all or is it just a gopro type thing???
How did it end there ( speed ? Or avoiding oncoming traffic)
Thanks again for your work posting

    Geoff,
Nice work........probably the biggest "catch" reeled in to date?
To ensure winch recoveries continue successfully could you please take 20 litre of old sump oil and slather that winch wire in it?
The wire's strands need the lubrication so that when the strain comes on the wires slide over each other rather than cause a "sticking point" which may then cause a broken strand...or worse......multiple broken strands.....
Also when the wire packs down onto the spool under tension the same 'slip" is necessary as each rotation lays the wire beside the previous rotation...
which also helps stop tangles and aids in unspooling the wire manually....
and lastly of course.... rusty winch wire reduces the wire strength.....
Was the winch OEM or did you have to engineer it?
Is the drive to the winch mechanical/hydraulic or electric?

That may also be the root cause of the crash...
someone pulling out back onto the road after "admiring the view"...
and being on the wrong side of the road...
like they would drive in their home country...
with the bus driver forced to take avoiding action....???

No . Try the north .it's a different story here . Our brynderwyns close for two months .traffic contro on every side roads .people cang even read stop sign or give way anymore millions of cones traffic trucks . Still wait till all the banks slip in the bryunderwyns slip again .due to bank batters to steep .can't see why they couldn't cut be hind banks whole new rd . Then pull it in with diggers no rd closing then .

Good to see the health & safety road hazard cones & signs out & traffic management people doing their thing. Guess you can get away with out that in South Westland aye.

Because you didn't see it, that doesn't mean there was none, there were "ACCIDENT" and "Road Closed" signs either side of the crash and people guiding the ...4 , passing cars through the scene during the recovery...

  • @hamshackleton

Very crude recovery - just sheer brute force, no finesse. Have a look at how Ron Pratt does it - MidWest Trucks, in the USA, with his Rotator.
