Geddy says in an interview that when he stopped using amps behind him on the stage he needed something back there to fill out the stage. Being that they all 3 love comedy and are always joking around they left it to the stage crew to come up with something and this is part of what they do. They even involve the crew in coming out during the show to change laundry, with the chicken roasters they come out and take out chicken and place others in etc.

That drummer was the iconic late Neil Peart aka Professor because he has written majority of all Rush's songs. Older man opening on screen introducing members of Rush was legendary comedian/ actor, Jerry Stiller, father of Ben Stiller. Jerry was known for his roles on Seinfeld & King of Queens.
In January of 2020, Neil died from brain cancer after years battling it. Other two of Rush, Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson are still living today

So much to explore with this band ladies! Check out "Vital Signs Live in Cleveland" "Working Man Live in Cleveland" and "Secret Touch (Snakes & Arrows Live)". It's an instrumental medley of some of their 70s songs followed with Spirit of the radio.

  • @dleasman

The intro is a medley of song from their early albums (first 6). Starts off with "finding my way", then into "anthem", then "bastille day", then "a passage to bangkok", then "cygnus x1", and finally "cygnus X1 book 2", before starting the first FULL song, the Spririt of Radio (from their 7th studio album, and not even half way through their catalog). But it's full force from when Alex first hits the stage with that black PRS guitar blazing.

The year was 1981, I was 17. I was at a party, and I brought the sound system. Now, I had heard the name RUSH, but never heard one of their songs. I was a Fleetwood Mac fan (still am), someone asked if they could play RUSH,(which I thought was a metal band because the druggies listened to RUSH). Not wanting to be a D!ck, I said "Ok, go ahead". He put on Permanent Waves, side 1. The first song is "Spirit Of Radio", that opening Alex Lifeson guitar riff hit and that was it, I was hooked. Now I'm 60, and they will always be my favorite band. I have an Eclectic taste, so Fleetwood Mac is still up there with me, the 80's new wave band Berlin, 70's latin rock Santana is another, and also, the Jazz/Rock Fusion of Blood, Sweat, and Tears.
This intro takes you through a instrumental medley, starting with a song from each of their 1st six albums, to lead into the iconic "Spirit Of Radio" from their 7th studio album. I glad younger generations are getting to know such a great band. Neil is deeply missed. RIP Professor!!!

He said that there was 27 different microphones on Peart's kit, each one wired differently to do a specific job, and how he had to set them all up and make sure they were tuned right. Right on, Ladies! Love me some Rush! They have SO much material to cover it cant be covered in a single show. I think it was '81 when they gave up hosting a warm-up band before taking the stage; started doing montages of some old songs (this one was 7, and then they broke into The Spirit Of Radio); and stared calling their shows "an evening with Rush," which was THREE HOURS of total bliss! Yes, Nail was a percussionist of an other-worldly order...considered my most to be the greatest of all time, may he RIP 😢 The washers and vending machines were an inside joke between Geddy (Bass and keyboards) and Alex (Guitar) because the arena uses a HUGE speaker system and Geddy said 'I can get the same volume as you if i had a damned washing machine on stage!' This, because Alex's amps are empty....only there for SHOW.
For more - check out Neil's drum solo in Frankfurt, Germany; and Xanadu live, 1981 to see Neil's full kit and how he could make playing the *Triangle* the coolest instrument EVER. (For Xanadu, I highly recommend reading the un-finished poem by Samuel Coleridge called Kublai Kahn. Neil finished the work by augmenting it into a warning to 'be careful what you wish for,.....' Oh, I remember reading in the liner notes (yes, I'm old enough to have had Rush on vinyl - lol) that on one song, Neil played on a piece of "plywood!"

I still have my Moving Pictures T from the 2 night sold out show in Minneapolis and the Washer Dryer/Vending machine was introduced as a joke by the roadies because they never quit touring and needed clothes washed all the time so back on the Vapor Trails tour, they just moved the machines on stage and did laundry during the show. Rush is a band that needs to be heard but seeing is believing, I would suggest another live performance like YYZ live in Rio or RUSH - 2112 - All 7 Parts Live & Remastered In HD (Toronto 1997 - 60fps) and also Natural Science - 1997/06/30 - Molson Amphitheatre, Toronto, Ontario CAN.
    Top notch musicianship.

Another great reaction...I would suggest the songs below to add to your Rush journey and reactions. All of these are absolutely fire!!! Especially the LIVE instrumentals with Geddy’s Bass, Alex’s Guitar, and Neil’s percussive artistry.
    - La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!! UNMATCHED - best instrumental EVER.
    - Working Man... Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (original studio version was in 1974)...The pure sight and performance of three men in their upper 50's take control of the stage and perform and play like they were in their 20's.
    - YYZ…live from Rio in 2002 (instrumental)…original was 1981
    - Xanadu...Live version 1981 Exit Stage Left tour...will leave you speechless from pure musicianship...original was 1977.

The drummer have a xylophone and other purcussion items, When i was drumming i used to learn everything i could from this man, he was my favourite drummer from the 80´s till today. Did i ever bcome as good drummer? Lol no not even close. I have a dvd concert from Brazil with this band and they have these wahsing machines onstage there aswell and during the intermission, some guys dressed out as them in the 70´s comes and empties the washing machines. As always u girls are so fun to watch, Happy birthday .

Great reaction ladies! Neil is a full-blown percussionist! Anything that can be hit, he uses it!
I was in absolute awe at this concert - the R30 Overture (as this opening song is called) is a beautiful medley of songs from the earliest part of their career - basically the 70's stuff, up to Permanent Waves, where they come in with The Spirit of Radio! It provided such a brilliant retrospective without playing the entire songs (and let's face it, many of those songs Geddy would've had a hard time singing!). Between this and the general setlist is probably why the R30 tour was my favourite of all the shows I saw from Rush (and I saw them 9 times). Cheers!

I grew up with this great band in the late 1970s. Best band of the 20th century. Now, i’ve been listening to another great three-piece band, called The Warning, who are giving me the same vibes I had growing up with Rush

Just a quick note on the laundry equipment, vending machines, etc. on Geddy's side of the stage. Geddy uses something called a "SansAmp" to run his bass directly into the mixer board. That means he doesn't have a big amplifier setup behind him. But Alex does have his wall of amps so Geddy's side would look weirdly empty by comparison. So Geddy started playing around with things to balance ⚖️ things out.
There were t-shirts in my the dryers and Alex and Geddy would toss them to the audience at the end each half of the show and at the encore. The shirts were red/white and said: "I got this shirt from dryer #1 (or 2, etc.)..."
Very collectable item for the serious Rush fan.

Only got into hardrock/metal end of the 80's....on my own and learned of more bands due to new friends. Rush was one of those bands...bought Chronicles the double compilation and Roll the bones was my first regular album. Bought all albums throughout the years after and as a comic book collector I was especially happy finding 2112 with the comic included. 👍

I saw Rush during this tour with my ex-wife. She inquired about the washing machines. Since she could be an airhead at times, i told her that they were Maytag Ampliers. She didn't fall for it. Of course, they were just props that Geddy thought of as a joke. Technology had changed and he didnt need massive amps and speakers so he used other things to fill the stage behind him.

Geddy Lee plays his vocals, bass and keyboards through the venues sound system. So he has no big stack of speakers behind Him Like Alex does. So the band swaps between having washers and dryers behind him and Chicken rotisserie machines cooking chickens. When the chickens are cooked, they are used to feed the band and the crew after the show.

Regarding the Washing Machines . Bassist Geddy Lee used a rather small set up for his bass in Live settings , basically playing through the P.A. and if you note , guitarist Alex Lifeson uses a not unusual stack of amps on stage so Geddy wanted to have a Big Stack of Washing machines on his side of the stage to offset Alex's Impressive set up 🙂 . On a different tour , Geddy had several Chicken Roaster machines set up behind him . I would guess it was an ingenious way to cook up the post show meal for crew & guests !

This melody of their earliest albums gave the audience a taste of their oldest favorites without Geddy having to hit the higher registers he used to sing in, which saved his voice for the rest of the show which is pretty long.
