    I was a teacher in an inner city school for over 20 years. Of course a school in a small area will work because they focus more on the students! Smallerl areas tend to care more about their children's education!

      Man my heart goes out to you .
      For years now I've been hearing more and more former teachers talking about why they gave it up ; especially in the city because the kids just didn't have respect for the teachers .
      I hope that wasn't your experience , though .

    I have autism, and I only went there twice, but I love it. First time I went was 13 years ago, I went with an old friend from high school who worked for the ferry business, and we went to a restaurant on Market Street, which is pretty much Main Street for the village, and we even hiked on the street too and went back to the mainland. Second time was actually earlier this summer, it was with my parents, we rented bikes and circled one lap around the island, went to some different restaurant I went to, and visited shops on the street and left for the mainland. Next fall will be my third time, with my parents again for another bike ride around the island just to see fall colors. But spring is my favorite time of year because of the blossoms on the trees, and some beautiful ground flowers too, and there's also lots of time left in the year before you have to deal with bad winter weather again, and last night when I went to bed and fell asleep, I dreamed that I was riding my bike on the island.

    This video brings back great memories. I grew up in Paradise, MI. My school in Paradise was Whitefish Township School. We played basketball, quiz bowl, and volleyball against Mackinac Island. For basketball, we stayed in Mackinac Island’s gym. We used sleeping bags. After the basketball games, we went to the dances. I made friends from Mackinac Island that way. Many great people come out of Mackinac Island.

    My mum ,Janet McCombie whom I am named loved the movie ' somewhere in time's and made an exact replica of the character Jane Seymour played . It was the white tea length dress with the white elbow gloves- 5 inches tall and perfect. Antique lace . Mum worked on the dress over 3 years searching for antique lace and fabric. The doll itself was designed by Cathy Hanson . I'm mentioning all these details because my beloved mum passed away 11 years ago on Oct 18th . I'm an only child and mum had fond memories of the island and went to nursing school in Highland park in the 1950s. She wanted me to visit but I fear I'm too late. Covid has changed our lives forever and I believe our world is going to see even more. I want to donate mums special creation to the Grand Hotel. Maybe someone can contact me ? I miss mum so much.

    • @RhodaLevy
      @RhodaLevy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They have a ''somewhere in time'' festival each year celebrating in a period correct attire...my heart goes to you, miss my mom too, I too have a doll from my mother that has been in the family since the early 1800's, I often wonder what to do with it when I go home. Maybe, you could write the grand hotels management and ask if they'd be interested in that beautiful doll...the worst that could happen is you will get to keep your mothers beautiful creation, and that's not a bad thing.

    • @juliarisi8385

      Janet McCombie How beautiful that you have such a precious memento of your beloved mother. I spent my honeymoon at the Grand Hotel during the “Somewhere in Time” special weekend that is usually in late October. We got married on 17th October. It is such a beautiful island and we loved our stay there. Had hope to go back for our 25th but wasn’t to be. I do hope you go someday and take your doll with you, there is a small museum inside hotel with film memorabilia and would think they would love to have it for their collection. Maybe contact the hotel now before they close for Winter. Lost my beloved mother 3 years ago now and miss her every day too,it’s hard. 😢

I loved hearing the clippity clop during the day but especially at night. We had hoped to visit again, but life has a way of making changes we don't anticipate. Maybe one day I'll get to enjoy the best fudge ever made and hear that clippity clop during a quiet evening.

    I have been there years ago when we were stationed at KI Sawyer AFB outside of Marquette and LOVED the island. That was interesting to see the island in the winter. If I grew up on that island I would have gone insane during the winters there, except I would have loved the snowmobiles. Well, we had snowmobiles and a private ski hill at KI Sawyer and I loved that. So, if I had lived on Mackinac Island at the same age I was at KI Sawyer, then I would be okay, but as a Junior and Senior in high school, I would have gone out of my mind. I thought the rule there was no motor vehicles-- I get the maintenance and emergency vehicles, but snowmobiles don't count? Wouldn't they be allowed to drive a golf cart around the island? I don't remember. There is far less charm to a golf cart than riding in a carriage, but still.

    Yoosta be a yooper. The island was always awesome. I was there last in 2019 after the Macinac Bridge walk and was disappointed. Employees on the island were like begging for tips no matter what they did. Didn't used to be that way. Decided then I would not go back.
    P.S. a yooper is someone who grew up in the Upper Peninsula.

      What do you think has changed that the workers all over the island were begging for tips ?
      I mean , yes , the economy has been getting bad ... even before covid .
      Can you explain a little bit more ... do you mean every counter you were at , had the tip jar ? ... and that it didn't always used to be like that ?

      Why? A person who likes to use the "toys" of snowplowing vehicles, check out the snowplowing at the National Parks here in the United States. One example is the "Going to the Sun Road" in Glacier National Park, Montana. On the "Big Drift Area" it has been as much as 90 FEET deep of snow and rock debris from avalanches. That's just from one winter season.
