Beautiful birdsong in the African savanna

  • Savannas in Southern Africa are some of the most lush and beautiful sounding environments I've ever recorded. The variety of species is just staggering. What's more important, the open landscape allows the calls to travel much further than in rainforests or jungles so the soundscape has depth, is beautifully layered and incredibly lush.
You can hear a variety of birds calling, from geese, ibises and other waterfowl to barbets, doves, coucals, cuckoos, bushshrikes and a myriad others. You can also hear occasional screechy and alien-like calls from a White-backed vulture. The best part is all of these calls can easily be placed in the acoustic environment with the help of reflections from nearby trees and rocky outcrops.
Recorded on the border between South Africa and Botswana in 2016 with Sound Devices 633 and a Sennheiser DMS rig. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

Reminds me of home (kenya) in the country side. I didn’t realize how beautiful it is to listen to birds chirp up until I ran across this video. I was young back then. Now I yearn to go back and enjoy it.

I hope you get to go back to Kenya, the sounds of the savanna there are just gorgeous. I have a few recordings from there on my channel including this one: th-cam.com/video/Lv7_3UQNo4s/w-d-xo.html

This recording remains one of my goto’s for relaxing. Love the amount of bird present. Together they make a sort of white noise of bird sounds. I love the doves in particular. Not just because they sound lovely, but also because they provide a nice contrast in sound, compared to the other birds.

    • @GeorgeVlad

Totally agree on dove calls, they're generally lower frequency than other bird sounds and incredibly varied.

I suspect it's actually taken from the SA side, from the confluence lookout at Mapungubwe National Park (the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers). The view is looking towards Zimbabwe, with Botswana out of shot to the left (www.google.co.uk/maps/@-22.2005822,29.3706265,3a,75y,25.72h,86.61t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sJCrN6yEDODY0oTcwIrJ5AQ!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DJCrN6yEDODY0oTcwIrJ5AQ%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D250.56662%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656).
