I notice you're using 7461x and 7462x, Traxxas GTR LONG and XX LONG. I literally just blew out my rear suspension tonight on a speed run (crashed) and I'm looking at upgrading my Slash 4x4 to the 5460x Traxxas Hard Anodized Teflon Coated GTR Shock Set. Is there much of a difference between the 7461/2 and the 5460x? Will the 5460X work or do I HAVE to use the 7461/2? I appreciate your help and time.

A thing to do if you want equal suspension travel in the front and back is to use rear shock towers on both sides and only rear shocks which will let the a arms drop the full way I dunno if you already did it but I thought I might as well suggest it

Is this when the shaft is compressed or not?

What oil did you end up liking with the GTR shocks and VG springs?

  • @lunseren

Is it okay if the GTR shocks on my bandit doesn’t FULLY rebound when assembled and on the car? Or does it need a tap more oil? Are the springs too soft? I filled them as in the video.

The shocks have a metal pivot in the center that connects the shocks to the car frame. The size of the holes are different. One is smaller. It's my inclination that the larger hole faces the frame. Thoughts?

I came here for that very reason haha.
I ended up putting the larger diameter towards the frame as well.

Do they have to rebound all the way?

Hey, so the bottom part of the shocks that holds the spring in place broke/fell out, I don’t really want to buy a whole new set of shocks. Is there a way I can just order those pieces? I’ve looked online for a while and I just can’t find them.

Whats up Cade!! If you are saying you can't afford one if you are young,,, work real hard in school and college. Once you have a great paying job you'll have every rc on the shelf. If you are older,, just make a budget. You'll be surprised how quick cash can stack when you try. Can't make a dollar with out a quater!

If ur still interested look at second hand cars, alot of people sell them for pretty cheap when they wre done with them, i just picked up a slash vxl ultimate for $140 only problem was a broken control arm

It seems that all rc cars are „overdamped“ when compared to an actual car or bicycle. Wouldn‘t we want our springs to work fast and only avoid bouncing by adding oil? I am totally new to the hobby, but I am trying to understand... for crazy jumping, a progressive spring with a high rate plus a light oil to provide fast response and just minimize the bouncing would be my first choice. Instead people use heavy oil. What is my fault in thinking?

Bit late to the party, but here we go. If you don't do anything with it I hope it helps someone else.
Scale is a funny thing. You can scale down the size of something. 1/10th scale, will make something 10 times as small, 1m becomes 10cm. That's simple. Weight is similar, you can try to make a 1/10 scale car 10 times lighter, but we usually don't cause then a slash should weigh about 130kg (290 pounds) whereas it's closer to 2.6kgs.
Weight doesn't scale well, mostly because of the force of gravity. Gravity is constant. No matter how big, small, broad or thin something is. That's where things get difficult.
You're correct in saying you want the fastest spring rate, reduced enough by oil to stop bouncing. However, if you've driven a motorbike, you know to adjust the suspension when traveling with a passenger vs when riding solo.
This is done by setting the preload and oil flow restriction. Since that's difficult to do on a RC, the easy way is to fluctuate with viscosity, thicker oil travels slower, dampens more.
On your RC car you want to chose a spring stiffness that is suited for the weight of the rig. Generally go for something that will compress 5-15% under it's own weight for on road and 15-25% for offroad usage. (ballpark figures) Then, depending on driving style you select the weight of the oil to increase or decrease dampening. Heavier oil is thicker, will slow down the rebound and is beneficial for harder smoother surfaces, the more uneven the surface is you want lighter (thinner) oil.

What weight are they in respect to the gtr springs listed in the parts list? Are they stiffer than the stiffest (blue) overall?

Heavier than all traxxas springs mate they are made for heavy slash trucks idk the weights but they really are awesome.
The vg springs are all the same weight so choose the color you like.
You wont be disappointed my slash was 7+ lbs last time i checked, but is crazy stable turns on a pebble.
Im pist my kids truck came with traxxas big bores and not gtr lol. Big bores are poor asphk.
Vg made these springs to use with their heavy roll cages too.
The only things stronger would be silly 12lbs to 20lbs integy springs made for the revo trucks. I had those on a revo and they stopped its saggy ass.
But vg springs are XX size not revo. So i wouldn't unless road running 100+
Also revo upgrades inc alloy shock caps retainers and perches. Blue or silver.
I don't think they are needed but for bling. I might get them sometime.

Did you see it on msuk or TH-cam? Its a red chopped flotec with mx28 tires?
Have you upgraded the hinge pins?
If not look up the nut and bolt method. Just take std out put longer screws in to put a nut on the back.
Ide do it with annodised blue screws nuts and cone washers. But found lunsford kit cheap when looking so got that. Then saw the nut/bolt method.
The hot racing gear carrier is better than the khz one. It uses an oring behind the bearing to stop dust going into the rear diff. Plus hot racing use branded bearings. Khz use generic bearings just numberd.
I orderd the king heads bearing adaptor and some spare bearings.
The std bearing adaptor is plastic and apparantly melts easy. But mine looked new still when i swapped it.
The vxl is puny mate its best attribute is its value to noobs lol. You could probably sell that vxl and buy a beast system for not alot on top of the vxl money.
Say £80 for a very good condition vxl system. With your fans too easy mayb.
Then its £100 for a direct drop in beast combo. The motor is up with the castle 2400kv. Traxxas forom posts say. They sing about this motor look it up.
Ive only even seen it get warm always on 3s with 2.8in mx28 tires and 19/54 gearing. 50mph over the grass.
Hobbywing sc8 esc £45-52 posted from asia.
      Leopard hobby 2700kv 4065 motor. £51 posted.
I sold my vxl brand new and got that combo and £20 for it lol. Doesnt even have a heat sink lol.
If thats on the list for upgrades you won't be dissapointed.
In fact i swear my kids £30 goolrc combo beats the vxl. Bcos its specs are identical but it has a esc fan as standard. We have the 3500kv goolrc combo on 2s in a stampede and its wheelie powerful with good speed geared higger than the vxl and was just warm after 10min garden test.
Ill never use a vxl lol. They just to valuable to others lol.

Unfortunately I couldn't get hold of the King Heads Motor Mount (that would have been my first choice TBH) so went for the HR, although thats also been really good and I was impressed with the quality etc.
My next step would have been to swap out the motor and ESC..... I say 'would have' as I was given a rather good offer for the build as it was, and I couldn't pass it up, so ended by selling the vehicle.
I'm not looking for a new project - secretly Ive always wanted an X-Maxx so I'm looking to pick one up soon.....

Bennben42 hello there. About shock oil weight with what your wanting to do. Get 50 or 70 those are best for what you are wishing to do. Those atomic rc shocks your talking about are good too.
