Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 2 | Anna Vinnitskaya, Dresden Philharmonic & Marek Janowski

  • Russian fireworks on the piano: Anna Vinniskaya is the soloist in Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16 with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marek Janowski. The concert took place in December 2019 at the Kulturpalast Dresden.
Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953) actually wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16 twice. Because the score of the 1912/13 piano concerto had been lost during World War I, Prokofiev produced a new version in 1923, in which he mainly made changes to the instrumentation.
The premiere of the G minor concerto in 1913, at which Prokofiev himself played the piano part, created a scandal. As the audience were walking out of the hall, the composer gave an encore anyway.
Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto bristles with energy and demands the utmost virtuosity from the pianist. The different parts dazzle again and again, plunging the listener into a roller coaster of emotions, as humorous, sorrowful, but also mischievous irony alternate.
Anna Vinnitskaya interprets Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 with devotion and charisma. The Russian pianist has won numerous prizes at prestigious piano competitions. In 2019, she made her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic with the 2nd Piano Concerto by Sergei Prokofiev. She also performed with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Kirill Petrenko at the Salzburg Festival in 2021. Vinnitskaya is also a professor of piano at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre (HfMT).
    (00:00) I. Andantino - Allegretto
    (12:07) II. Scherzo: Vivace
    (14:43) III. Intermezzo: Allegro moderato
    (22:09) IV. Finale: Allegro tempestoso

I was about to skip to the solo but the second I heard her start playing... I watched the whole video. I am perplexed at how she holds tension in the piece without making it sound either too simple, too complicated, too dramatic or too dark. She hits that spot of humanity which is just DIVINE. For example, the way she lifts the pedal at 29:20 so that the orchestra can join in is like a breath of fresh air. That is one of the many many many things that she very carefully added that really bring a whole new perspective on the interpretations of this piece I have seen in the past. I am SHOOK

I've been obsessed with the Prokofiev Piano Cto # 2 for quite some time, and Vinnitskaya's extraordinarily exciting and moving performance hasn't cured me of this obsession. Far from it. And am I the only one who seems to hear the Dies Irae Latin chant and Wagner's Liebestod threading its way through it? Love and death ? Death and love.

For we mere mortals hard to conceive of a human replicating so many immensely difficult note sequences in faithfulness to the score, and exhibiting creativity and musicianship spontaneously. About a dozen or so fabulous readings in this monumental opus, this ranks among the finest. Actually knew a pianist that was such a perfectionist who realized that knowing human infallibility is inevitable, he would subconsciously program one wrong note in his performances.

Why isn't Anna more known? I know this work for decades thanks to an excellent recording (LP) of Ashkenazy with Prévin dated 1978 and just had heard (seen) the video of Yuja Wang which is also very good. But then I noticed this other video of Anna Vinnitskaya with the Dresden Orc. and out of sheer curiosity I went for a peek. To my surprise I stood with her to the end. She's obviously excellent and her rendition of the work is at least at par with the Yuja's. Mellower, less fiery, but also very clear and resolved. Top of the game, both. Wish there were more.

Pianist: Incredible. Absolutely the way Prokofiev should be played, even though I am far from being conservative. But this is the performance to model from, in my opinion NOT as a pianist. The technique in the Scherzo (mov 2) ❤.
Prokofiev: Absolutely amazing. The harmony and voice-leading are fascinating, especially from the strings at the start of movement 1. The middle two movements are my favourite. The trombones and timpani at the start of the third movement are such a great orchestration. Quite opera-like.

Prokofiev's symphonies are a bit too much for me (except the first one, haha), but I love his piano concertos and this one is no exception. This performance is now my favourite #2 concerto. The first version I hear usually sticks in my head as the one I compare the others to, but this one easily replaces all others of #2 concertos I've heard so far.

The only problem with this concerto is that Prokofiev had to go and write a third concerto... and that might explain why we don't hear this performed as frequently as we should. Had he stopped at only two piano concertos, you would hear this in concert halls as frequently as the third.
